Watching sunrise from the top of mt. Merapi. Last year the volcano killed over 300 ppl and left thousands without home. Half a year after the explosion, angry Merapi is still roaring and masses of sulfur smoke come from its crater. But the nature comes to life again, and with her come people. Fertile, volcanic soil is the best for planting rice and any other plants. Nobody dare to wonder what tomorrow will bring.
This was taken near the peak of Gunung Merapi about a week and a half before the 2010 eruptions. After climbing from the north (from the village of Selo) to catch the sunrise, we took a breather before climbing back down. This is a shadow of the volcano looking down on the south side.

Merapi Lava Tour. Sand mining seems to be the principal activity around the Sabo dams where the cold lava flow carrying sand, boulders and debris are contained by the barriers during heavy torrential rain. A heavy duty sieve is used to separate the high quality volcanic sand from the larger aggregates.
This was about one month before Mt Merapi decided to have an explosion, killing 353 people and forcing the evacuation of 350,000 (presumeably including from this location). This image was taken at dusk and with a thunderstorm approaching.
mt.merapi is located most nothern part of Jogja. Last Mt.Merapi erupted in 2010 leaving deep sadness to people in surrounding area. the last eruption also buried Kinahrejo village.

The government is building several hundred transitional shelters in various locations around the mountain for those who cannot return to their villages. ECHO is providing funding for the construction of some of the water and sanitation facilities.
This woman refused to leave her village although it's located only 7 km's from the merapi and thus within the danger zone.

Merapi Lava Tour. Visitors photographing alien. Hey! One of them was taking a shot at me instead. I was told a day earlier by the cab driver there's a stone at Mount Merapi that looks like a human face which they call alien. The boulder (watu manten) was carried along during previous cold lava flow and deposited at its current site.

Merapi (peak height of 2968 m above sea level, per 2006) is a volcano in central Java and is one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia. Slopes of the south side are in the administrative district of Sleman, Yogyakarta, and the rest are in the region of Central Java province, the Magelang district on the west side, Boyolali in the north and east, and Klaten district on the southeastern side. Forest area around the peak became Mount Merapi National Park area since 2004.
The mountain is very dangerous because, according to modern records have erupted (peak activity) every two to five years and is surrounded by very dense settlements. Since 1548, this volcano has erupted many as 68. City of Manila and the city of Yogyakarta is the nearest large town, is under 30 km from the summit. On the slopes there is still a settlement to a height of 1700 m and is just four kilometers from the summit. Because of its importance, the Merapi to be one of sixteen volcanoes of the world are included in the Decade Volcano Project
