'Photographs and memories'

The colour pictures show the morning of 16th June 1976. We went to Leeds station and as far as I knew it was to watch the 'Leeds Executive' train leaving, hauled by one of my favourite 'Deltic' locomotives.

Then we got on the train, my parents telling me we were travelling to the first stop. The top left picture shows the excitement of my sister and myself at finding out we were going on our first ever trip to London! This was unbelievable for me, I'd seen the trains leaving for the capital hundreds of times and always dreamed of making the journey!

It's not apparent from the pictures, but the denim jacket that I'm wearing had a Deltic embroidered on the back, each time I 'cabbed' a Deltic mum added its name underneath! How cool was I as a kid;-)

The lower picture shows us stood outside of London King's Cross station on a baking hot day, the summer of '76 was one to remember for the drought conditions we had.

The background picture isn't from the day, but shows a Deltic locomotive, 55002, leaving Leeds on the final Yorkshire Pullman train, a photograph that appeared in the Yorkshire Post newspaper. For the record, the Deltic we had was 55008 The Green Howards.

To me, photographs often bring back really happy memories. I can almost smell the bacon and eggs from the restaurant car as I write! It's funny too what distant memories drift back into mind, anyone remember 'Lilt', with its 'totally tropical taste'? I'm pretty sure that was new in the shops that year!

40/52 Memory

.

#selfportrait

.

Sometimes I get glimpses of energies that drown me. Energies which I haven’t felt for a very long time. And before I can make a house out of them, they disappear. Those things are so fleeting and stun me, and in the memories I recollect from those moments in time, it feels safe to finally linger.

.

And memory is a funny thing, isn’t it? How we can recollect some of them with a sweet longing immensity, and others which we rather just let go are so wondrous they stay with us forever, with a kind of detail capable of breaking any soul.

.

And in that capacity to remember, to embrace what has already passed, we understand the simplicity of our hearts. How that boy that broke our heart and that girlfriend that betrayed us, how that tiny little decision of going out one night or fail at that exam has brought us right here, to this almighty moment where we are still able to recall it all so vividly.

.

We are nothing without where we have been. Who we have met. Who we have loved, and lost, and touch and got hurt by. They all belong in waterfalls that recycle and recycle over and over what we have become. And I am so grateful for the hurt and for the love. And to be able to, through it all, still be able to have a kind of fire in me that pushes me to live with a kindred heart and a desire to do good.

.

I have always known myself so very well through the mist of loneliness and wishful thinking, and I am but trying to always be and remain a cosmos of goodness for any soul and heart that wishes to know my own. 🌿

glistening glass, crystal corpse, silver spoons, delicate dame...

Memories of Summer - 2013

It isn't easy to come up with a picture that represents a childhood memory, but I still have my pencil box from grade one.The picture on the lid was of children pulling a sleigh over the snow. There was a ruler marked on one side and three compartments inside. Dad wrote my name on the bottom which was marked over by my classmate who stole it from me and it was months before I got it back. His name is still also on the bottom. I forgive you, Harry :)

Memories of the open cast coal mine at Zhalai Nouer, in Northern China. By 2008, it had become home to largest concentration of working steam locomotives on the planet as this panorama of several stitched photos shows. Now the coal is trucked out of the pit. © David Hill. January 2008.

This photo shows the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe (better known as the Holocaust Memorial) in Berlin, Germany. The Memorial is massive and haunting, reminiscent of being in a graveyard.

Jan falls back into memories while touching the fragrant flower...

Just like this passing ibis, sometimes the memories start to get blurry.

Spotted while walking on Pinckney Island at Hilton Head, SC. Several of the ponds on this island were full of bird life, and one pond was even named 'Ibis Pond' and was filled with white ibis (as this bird is).

Another year has flown by. Wishing you all a happy New Year and many more fun photos and adventures in the next! Thank you for all the comments, faves, and comradery over this past one.

Taken for Friday Flickr's Childhood Memories weekly challenge.

Lockdown has given me time to go through stuff I've not seen in years! this toy fort and soldiers belong to my younger brother who is now in his mid forties. I'm sure he'll say I could have been more creative with this photo!! I'll pass on his childhood toys to him when we are allowed to visit again!
