I just kept aiming my little $10 .1 megapixel Shift 3 mini digital camera at the thunderstorm until I got something. Only twice did the delayed reaction of the shutter on the toy camera fire at the same time as the lightning struck, but this was the best of the two times it did. I was standing in the relative comfort of my covered front porch and holding my hand with camera attached out from under the edge of the roof into the rain and aiming in an upwardly direction. I remember this streak - it was a lot longer, but I just caught part of it.

A two-shot, forty megapixel stitched panorama of a Snub 23 tag under the A12 near Wickham Market in Suffolk, UK.

People often tell me that this hotel is ugly but I think it has some charm. It's next to the central station in Copenhagen, Hotel Astoria.

The photo is 146 megapixels!!! I used the Fotodiox Rhinocam adapter, it enables you to take a super high resolution photos using your Fuji/Sony/Canon/Nikon camera and a medium format lens. I used the Mamiya Sektor C 110mm f2.8 lens. The Rhinocam gives you 8 images that you then stitch together in software (I used Adobe Camera Raw's panorama feature).

Post processing video tutorials & written tutorials in German and English

*Toronto Skyline* - Canada

(Weiter unten für Deutsch)

News:

Tony Kuyper and I have finally released the matching video series for the German version of the TKActions Panel. It's been fantastic to work with Tony on this project and we are a bit proud to push this product out to the market and hope that people will find the video tutorials as well the TKActions panel in German helpful and that we can be a part of your creative workflow. Free tutorials and videos can be found here: www.andredistel.com/tutorials-luminanzmasken/

Deutsch:

THE SHOT

The amount of detail and resolution is pretty amazing seeing the full resolution image.

The image a panoramic vertical stichted from 6 individual images resulting in a 115 Megapixel resolution = can be printed very large!

Toronto is one of the very cities where you can see the stars above the city, meaning light pollution is relatively low compared to many other North American cities.

Post-processing was in Photoshop using luminosity masking techniques. There are free tutorials on my website, showing how I apply these techniques and a 2 1/2 hour video tutorial series, which I did with Tony Kuyper as my partner in crime explaining luminosity masks and blending techniques.

There are FREE TUTORIALS on my website in German and English on how I use the TK Actions in my post-processing workflow.

Nikon D800E Dr. Elliot McGucken Fine Art Photography for Los Angeles Gallery Show!

Yet more photos and more final edits! I was up at 4:30 AM the past four days shooting sunrises! Awesome sunrises over Point Dume thie time of year in Malibu.

Then I spent all day today moving over 75 large photos into the gallery! Most of these are framed and matted with 13"x19" metallic prints and an 18"x24" mat and a 3" wood-grain black frame! They look awesome! Stop on by Bel Air Camera's Gallery downstairs if you are close to UCLA or in Westwood. Give me a head's up, and I will meet you there if I'm free.

I thought I was done a couple days ago for December's LA Gallery show, but art is never done until it's done, and even then. . . Will be busy printing and framing in nice large, matted formats and frames and museum glass! Five of these photos will be printed on 40" x 60" floating wall mounted metal sheets! I think I know which--will share photos of the photos hanging on the walls!

And I am mounting some on plexiglass/acryllic--front mounting them! Some I am printing on lossy fuji-crystal archival paper too, and then front mounting 40"x60" versions to plexiglass--will send photos!

The secret to HDR photography is that you want people to say, "Woe dude--that's unreal!" And not, "Dude--that's not real!" "Unreal" is the word they use when they're trying to figure out the photo--what makes it cool--is it a photo? Is it painted? How'd it come to be--how'd you bend the light that way? "That's not real," is what they say if you have the saturation/HDR/ etc. turned up too high. :)

Some (almost) final edits for December's Los Angeles Gallery Show! Printing them on metallic paper at 13" x 19" and mounting and framing them on a 4mm 18x24 white mat and 2" dark wood frame. Also printing some 40" x 70" whihc is over three feet by five feet! Wish you all could come (and hang out with the goddesses)!

Let me know your favs.!

Preparing for some gallery shows this fall to celebrate 100,000,000 views! Printing a few dozen photographs in ~ 30"x40" formats and mounting/framing. Here are some close-to-final edits. HDR photography 7 exposures shot at 1EV and combined in photomatix: 36 megapixel Nikon D800E with the awesome Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8G ED AF-S Nikkor Wide Angle Zoom Lens. 45SURF Hero's Journey Mythology Photography!

Epic Scenic HDR Landscapes / Seascapes of the Malibu Canyons & Beaches Shot with Nikon D800: Hero's Journey Mythology Photography!

Shot with the Nikon Nikkor wide-angle 14-24 mm 2.8 lens!

Seven exposures @ 1EV finished in photomatix.

Enjoy the Hero's Journey Mythology Photography, and all the best on a hero's journey of your own making!

These were shot with Nikon's best D800 with the 14-24mm wide-angle Nikkor lens. 7 exposures were taken at 1 EV intervals, and combined in photomatix to bring out the shadows and highlights.

Rather large HDR (high dynamic range) photo--you can see great detail both near and far! View the detail at full size!

The Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8G ED AF-S Nikkor Wide Angle Zoom Lens rocks!

High Dynamic Range (HDR) photos rock in capturing the full dynamic range of the scene!

Stop on by the Bel Air Camera Gallery and Enjoy Dr. Elliot McGucken's epic fine art photography in person!

This breathtaking shot of the volcanic landscape of La Plaine des Sables captures the stark, untouched expanse stretching to the horizon.

In the distance, the mighty Piton de la Fournaise can be seen (2.632 m), a silent guardian over the landscape.

The image is composed of 21 individual shots, merged into a gigantic view with a resolution of 102 megapixels (13729x7440 pixels).

Due to the extremely high resolution, it cannot be displayed in the browser – enjoy it by downloading the image! (For private use only)

I wanted to capture the sublime feeling of freedom, the vastness and the impressive grandeur of this mountain landscape, as if you were standing right there on the edge of Piton Maïdo.

For this reason, I created a panoramic image consisting of 21 photos, because otherwise you would only see 5% of the landscape in the picture, which is why such photos never feel like they were taken live.

With a resolution of 71 megapixels, you can really zoom in and explore.

If you want to see La Réunion from above, you should definitely visit the 2,205 meter high Piton Maido. Along the way, there are many beautiful spots for barbecues and picnics along the more than 400 bends.

Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness

Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun

Conspiring with him how to load and bless

With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run;

To bend with apples the moss'd cottage-trees,

And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;

To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells

With a sweet kernel; to set budding more,

And still more, later flowers for the bees,

Until they think warm days will never cease,

For Summer has o'er-brimm'd their clammy cells. --To Autumn. by John Keats

"Winter Solitude"

This 100 Megapixel image was created from 8 different photos. It was shot in the Martis Valley just north-east of Mount Watson (outside of North Lake Tahoe).

The solitude of the run down shack first struck me in composing this scene, along with the perfectly untouched field of fresh snow. Additionally, found a personal bonus with how the pine trees formed rows in the mountains and the movement in the clouds.

So universally true is this, the spot where we chance to be always seems the best.

The focus of my trip to Iceland was to photograph a view over Alftavatn that I had missed on my previous visit to the area the year before due to bad weather. My plan was to hike across a ridge over a couple of days to give myself the best change of seeing the view in good light. Although I didn’t get a sunrise or sunset in the 4 opportunities I had, I did get a fair share of excellent visibility and some nice light too. This shot was taken not far from my first night's camp. Although it is only a mile from the Laugavegur, Iceland's most famous hiking trail, I saw absolutely no one for 2 and a bit days, the solitude was great. The final image is a whopping 350 megapixels from 24 image shot in 2 rows of 12 vertical frames.
