Nikon D800E Dr. Elliot McGucken Fine Art Photography for Los Angeles Gallery Show!
Yet more photos and more final edits! I was up at 4:30 AM the past four days shooting sunrises! Awesome sunrises over Point Dume thie time of year in Malibu.
Then I spent all day today moving over 75 large photos into the gallery! Most of these are framed and matted with 13"x19" metallic prints and an 18"x24" mat and a 3" wood-grain black frame! They look awesome! Stop on by Bel Air Camera's Gallery downstairs if you are close to UCLA or in Westwood. Give me a head's up, and I will meet you there if I'm free.
I thought I was done a couple days ago for December's LA Gallery show, but art is never done until it's done, and even then. . . Will be busy printing and framing in nice large, matted formats and frames and museum glass! Five of these photos will be printed on 40" x 60" floating wall mounted metal sheets! I think I know which--will share photos of the photos hanging on the walls!
And I am mounting some on plexiglass/acryllic--front mounting them! Some I am printing on lossy fuji-crystal archival paper too, and then front mounting 40"x60" versions to plexiglass--will send photos!
The secret to HDR photography is that you want people to say, "Woe dude--that's unreal!" And not, "Dude--that's not real!" "Unreal" is the word they use when they're trying to figure out the photo--what makes it cool--is it a photo? Is it painted? How'd it come to be--how'd you bend the light that way? "That's not real," is what they say if you have the saturation/HDR/ etc. turned up too high. :)
Some (almost) final edits for December's Los Angeles Gallery Show! Printing them on metallic paper at 13" x 19" and mounting and framing them on a 4mm 18x24 white mat and 2" dark wood frame. Also printing some 40" x 70" whihc is over three feet by five feet! Wish you all could come (and hang out with the goddesses)!
Let me know your favs.!

A 140 megapixel panorama of Elephant Island from Cape Valentine (far left) to Point Wild (far right), South Shetland Islands, Antarctica. In 1916, Ernest Shackleton's shipwrecked expedition camped at Point Wild for four months before being rescued.
Shot with D800 and 70-200mm f/2.8 and merged with CS5 photomerge. Manual exposure (exposed for the highlights) was used with no polarizer to ensure images would blend seamlessly. Unfortunately, Flickr is just a terrible place to view panoramas. I'm sure this would look nice printed at about 8 feet long.

I shot in DX mode which crops away the extra pixels and takes me 1.5X closer while allowing for up to 7 FPS with the Nikon D810's Nikon MB-D12 Battery Grip using the 8 AA battery option! 8 Duracles took me through around 3,000 shots no problem--maybe more! I was shooting at the equivalent of 900mm with the 1.5x crop factor! Pretty close! Had I gone with the Nikon D4s, I would have gotten 12 fps, but no DX crop factor, as the sensor has only around 14mp, compared to the d810's 36 megapixels! Sure the larger pixel size on the Nikon D4s full frame sensor comes in handy indoors or at night, but in the brigth sun, there's more than enough light for the smaller pixels in crop mode! Sure we lose some pixels from the outer edges when shooting in DX crop mode, but most of those pixels would be cropped away in lightroom anyway. And the smaller files make the memory cards last longer, while also upping the FPS to 7 shots per second! Not quite 12 FPS< but still awesome and enough I felt!
What a beautiful way to test the Nikon D810 and Tamron 150-600mm zoom lens for sports photography!
Athletic graceful girl goddesses! Tall, thin, fit and in shape! Pro women's surfers form the van's us open wearing both long wetsuits and bikini bottoms with shorty wetsuit tops/summer wetsuits. Sexy, beautiful beach babes and water goddesses all! Many are professional swimsuit bikini / surf lifestyle models too!

Been hard at work on my books--my physics books on Dynamic Dimensions Theory (dx4/dt=ic) celebrating the hitherto unsung reality of the fourth expanding dimension which all the photons surf across the universe en route to making a photograph! Also working on an art, mythology, and photography book titled The Golden Hero's Odyssey! All the best on your Epic Hero's Odyssey! Always love hearing from y'all! :)

Blotchiness near the horizon is probably something to do with the old 6 megapixels camera I was using.
Those who boast about their latest photo gear would have never thought about the one who owns the world's most powerful lenses & sensors that money can't buy...
In technical terms, a human eye has a resolution equivalent to 576 megapixels. An eagle's eye has a resolution comparable to 1296 megapixels !!
We humans have a tendency to under-estimate everything, but don't you think we are much inferior to several other creations of God ?!

I won with this entry.
I had planned a Chucky image but because of this, that and the other thing that did not happen.
I was doing a "baby" not babe photoshoot and this was one of those images.

I have to admire the creativity and collective effort required to create such an interesting display! Of course, having only used digital cameras since they first hit the market (a Canon 1.3 Megapixel was my first one), my eye was drawn to the pink (painted) digital camera at the bottom right.

Ralph Waldo Emerson. The happiest man is he who learns from nature the lesson of worship.
Lucius Annaeus Seneca: On entering a temple we assume all signs of reverence. How much more reverent then should we be before the heavenly bodies, the stars, the very nature of God!
John Muir: All the wild world is beautiful, and it matters but little where we go, to highlands or lowlands, woods or plains, on the sea or land or down among the crystals of waves or high in a balloon in the sky; through all the climates, hot or cold, storms and calms, everywhere and always we are in God's eternal beauty and love. So universally true is this, the spot where we chance to be always seems the best.

*NOT EXACTLY THE SPHINX*
Little gray tabby lays it all out there, makes his legs and paws and claws look bigger than they really are.
My Story part of this is that I go to visit the Humane Society often, and this little Tabby Kitten really wasn't very big, but he was waking up and stretching way out, and the angle came out nicely. Some people ask me how could I go there. Doesn't it make me too sad? My answer is not at all. My life and their life is better even if just for a few moments of interaction. I encourage people to adopt a pet. Yesterday I helped a lady reach a cat that was way up on top row, way in the back. I couldn't even see her (the cat). I got on a stool and got her down, put her in that lady's arms, and she never left. She got to know the cat a bit and adopted it that day. I felt soooooo good. I don't even work there, but I am there a lot taking pictures for my fun and for Flickr. I guess this also addresses "My Life As" a photographer who likes both wild and domestic animals.
I went back today and found out He is a She, named Trixie, and she is a little rascal. The Humane Society should have called her Tricksie. Cute as a bug's ear and into everything.
On April 20, 2006 I added this to my caption: Actually, CharmDar, Trixie did get adopted right away after I took this picture. I never dreamed I would see her again. About 4 months later, which is about the time some people find the cuteness of a kitten wears off, and they unfortunately lose interest and sometimes abandon the pet, or sometimes return it to the shelter where they got it. Maybe it isn't unfortunate... Maybe it is good that they gave the cat a chance to have a home that really is good. Anyway, I was at the Humane Society about a month ago (I haven't been up to par on getting my pictures posted), and there was a tabby cat, bigger of course, but named Trixie. I asked one of the attendants, is that the same Trixie that was here about 3 or 4 months ago? She said yes! I was shocked to see her again. The people who adopted her the first time said they were giving her back to the shelter because they were moving. I wonder if they have any clue in the world that Trixie has really close to 3,000 views (note on March 29, 2010, I updated this to read that she has over 43,000 views now, and is well-known on Flickr? On June 14, 2015 I updated it again to show over 50,000 views now. Anyway, it is up to me to get the second chance pictures posted (of course you can't always go back and capture that one special shot like this was). She is gone again, and this time I hope to a loving and forever home. I did leave the link to her picture with the employees at the Humane Society to give to the new owners. I don't know if they ever got it or ever cared if they got it.

Well, I went back through over 100 photos tonight and re-edited them!

From the Pipiwai Trail a couple miles up the eastern slope of Maui's Mt. Haleakala Volcano (near Hana) is a huge, dense bamboo forest. This panoramic capture is 36 images with approx 20-25% overlap producing an end result of roughly 375 megapixels. Can you say LARGE print? And the detail is impressive...in the full res image you can see bugs and individual water droplets on the bamboo...it's coming to the 4,000 sq ft Aperture Academy gallery soon!

Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness

Conspiring with him how to load and bless
With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run;
To bend with apples the moss'd cottage-trees,
And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;
To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells
With a sweet kernel; to set budding more,
And still more, later flowers for the bees,
Until they think warm days will never cease,
For Summer has o'er-brimm'd their clammy cells. --To Autumn. by John Keats

One of the reasons why I love San Francisco during the holiday time is that it gets an extra special treat to its skyline: the four Embarcadero Center buildings outline themselves with over 17,000 lights, the Transamerica Building lights their “Beacon” and several other buildings don themselves with festive colors. Trying to get Sammi to get into photography, I brought her on a trip to the Eastern Sierras with Willie and I where she froze her tuchas off. Wanting to give her a better experience I invited her along for our visit into the San Francisco to photograph its skyline. It wasn’t until I offered to take her to the “Boxing Room” for dinner (Southern Creole) afterwards that she agreed!
Willie, Alan, James, Sammi, and I met high upon this hill overlooking the city. James had arrived early and setup 5 different tripods all over the hill. Reining him in, we all setup and waited. In previous years the Transamerica Building turned its “Beacon” on at 5pm but lately it’s been turned on at 6pm, almost an hour after sunset. The 20-30 minutes after the sun goes down is called “Blue Hour”, where the sky takes a beautiful blue/purple tone. By 6pm the sky is dark, shadows creep in, and the photos become boring. With high hopes for an early turn on I looked at the Transamerica Building at 4:55pm and saw the light was on! Yes!
During the 20 minutes or so of Blue Hour I took a number of compositions. The scene is difficult because the Bay Bridge and its light provide a nice line on the left, but the city beneath it is somewhat boring. The main part of the city lies on the right but I didn’t want to ignore the beautiful lights of the Bay Bridge. To our left were some vines and a building that blocked the view and got in the way of our scene. I decided that a panorama was necessary and I wanted to get to make the city buildings appear slightly closer, so I through on the 80-200mm lens and took an 8-photo panoramic. I took a 9th shot to make the star on top of the Transamerica building even larger. I ended with a 177 megapixel image that I then cropped in various ways.
Wanting to highlight both the bridge, the city, and the lines from the road leading through the photo, I cropped the full 177 megapixel pano into this 110 megapixel photo with a 2.5:1 aspect ratio. Zoom in to see all the amazing detail of the city in all its holiday glory!
