Some (almost) final edits for December's Los Angeles Gallery Show! Printing them on metallic paper at 13" x 19" and mounting and framing them on a 4mm 18x24 white mat and 2" dark wood frame. Also printing some 40" x 70" whihc is over three feet by five feet! Wish you all could come (and hang out with the goddesses)!

Preparing for some gallery shows this fall to celebrate 100,000,000 views! Printing a few dozen photographs in ~ 30"x40" formats and mounting/framing. Here are some close-to-final edits. HDR photography 7 exposures shot at 1EV and combined in photomatix: 36 megapixel Nikon D800E with the awesome Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8G ED AF-S Nikkor Wide Angle Zoom Lens. 45SURF Hero's Journey Mythology Photography!

Seven exposures @ 1EV finished in photomatix.

These were shot with Nikon's best D800 with the 14-24mm wide-angle Nikkor lens. 7 exposures were taken at 1 EV intervals, and combined in photomatix to bring out the shadows and highlights.
Rather large HDR (high dynamic range) photo--you can see great detail both near and far! View the detail at full size!

Thanks to Keith Moon, developer of iPhone app Instant Tweetup as well as my own City Poems and Geo Poems for taking this snap. This was taken in bright sun with strong shadows which must be taken into account. I tend to look at three things: the sharpness of the foreground, the figure on the back of the building on the left and the degree to which you can read the number and letters on the shop at the back. This is well up with most of the other 5 megapixel camera phones (and the 8mp ones as well as they aren't obviously better) . . . but judge for yourself.

This picture was done with a Sony Mavica sub-megapixel digital camera, hand held, and that camera has a feature where I could choose to solarize the picture in the camera. This produces a substantially different technique than when one solarizes in a photo program called ArcSoft2. I took this picture at the Japanese Gardens in Portland, Oregon, a gorgeous place. Somehow, I'm not sure why, but this seems like an appropriate New Year's Send Off picture. Good wishes to all.
This photo addresses My Story, and Sentimental Things and Places. My very earliest memories of life include the Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, California. From age about 3 and half to 6 and a half, my parents worked and left us kids alone; so I would head out for pretty places on the cable car, or walk. The Japanese Garden in San Francisco was so comforting and reminded me of when my mom spent some time with me. When my brothers had started school, and I hadn't yet, my Mom would take me to the gardens for a break between househunting in San Francisco. When I went somewhere pretty and had a good time, I would go to great lengths to get back to that spot. I would ask strangers for directions, etc. Or I would pay great attention to how we got there. Though this picture is the Japanese Garden in Portland, Oregon and not the one in San Francisco, I get a sense of reliving those childhood pleasant times. This photo addresses my life as someone who keeps seeking out the comfortable and beautiful places. Delina

A friend of the family came over a week ago and brought this for me. It's an ancient digital camera, the first of its kind. It's a 1.3 megapixel Panasonic PV-SD4090. This thing is so old that it uses a floppy disc for memory. It's hard to believe how far we've come! I carry a small pocket camera that has a pixel resolution an order of magnitude times larger (10 megapixels).

I was curious to find out how large my files are from the AP170, a panoramic camera which produces 6cm x 17cm negatives, using 120 films.
I scan my films with 2400dpi resolutions and the resulting files are:
- 16000px X 5000px in dimension
- 250MB TIFF file and 31MB JPG file in size
BTW, it takes 50-60 min to scan two pieces of 6 x 17 negs with digital ICE.

I went out to capture some Christmas fun at 2.7 megapixels. Because film isn’t challenging enough. Nikon D1 digital camera, still a pro, even if it isn’t up to modern ‘Hype’. It can get the job done. These were shot at ISO 200 and f/22. Using a Kodak DKL Schneider-Kreuznach Retina Xenon 50mm f/1.9 lens adapted to Nikon. That lens is late 1960s vintage repurposed from a retired Kodak Instamatic Reflex 126 camera. I meant to set the shutter speed as well, but in the end, I forgot and left the D1 to its own devices. These are Downtown, Ogden, Utah shot on Boxing Day 2021.

I made this mount for my old 2 megapixel Olympus C-700 Ultra-Zoom with a Raynox "wide" angle lens, giving me about a 70 degree spread.
I happened to have a wooden 30 sided rhombic triacontahedron lying around that I made a few years before, so I adapted it to hold the camera in its belly. The shape sits on a base only certain ways, making it pretty easy to take 1 photo for each side of the triacontahedron.
The graphic novelist and illustrator David Chelsea has a hobby of painting on globes, so this method was designed with the idea of taking reference photos for globe paintings.
I wrote a program called Laidout that could take those 30 images, and slap them all down approximately into a net. Then I'd use the Gimp to touch up all 60 edges.
May I point out that this was long before I had any concept of automatic stitching software, and even what an "equirectangular image" was. My goal was to have little picture balls to hold in my hand, and I couldn't use Flexify on my platform. One serious problem with this method, other than being really time consuming, was that my little camera would more often than not focus on the mount, rather than the scene itself!
I now use a fisheye lens and a much nicer camera more suitable for this kind of photography, but I still think it is far cooler to shoot with a rhombic triacontahedron mount.
An 82 megapixel stitch of the Minster in the snow taken 8th of January, itself taken from a 113MP original.
I love being able to zoom in on every tiny detail to pick out the individual gargoyles, and until Canon do some serious upgrading this is the only way to do it!
I cocked up and left out a shot in the bottom left, so had to do some rather crude copy and paste to cover the hole!
