Nikon D800E Dr. Elliot McGucken Fine Art Photography for Los Angeles Gallery Show!
Yet more photos and more final edits! I was up at 4:30 AM the past four days shooting sunrises! Awesome sunrises over Point Dume thie time of year in Malibu.
Then I spent all day today moving over 75 large photos into the gallery! Most of these are framed and matted with 13"x19" metallic prints and an 18"x24" mat and a 3" wood-grain black frame! They look awesome! Stop on by Bel Air Camera's Gallery downstairs if you are close to UCLA or in Westwood. Give me a head's up, and I will meet you there if I'm free.
I thought I was done a couple days ago for December's LA Gallery show, but art is never done until it's done, and even then. . . Will be busy printing and framing in nice large, matted formats and frames and museum glass! Five of these photos will be printed on 40" x 60" floating wall mounted metal sheets! I think I know which--will share photos of the photos hanging on the walls!
And I am mounting some on plexiglass/acryllic--front mounting them! Some I am printing on lossy fuji-crystal archival paper too, and then front mounting 40"x60" versions to plexiglass--will send photos!
The secret to HDR photography is that you want people to say, "Woe dude--that's unreal!" And not, "Dude--that's not real!" "Unreal" is the word they use when they're trying to figure out the photo--what makes it cool--is it a photo? Is it painted? How'd it come to be--how'd you bend the light that way? "That's not real," is what they say if you have the saturation/HDR/ etc. turned up too high. :)
Some (almost) final edits for December's Los Angeles Gallery Show! Printing them on metallic paper at 13" x 19" and mounting and framing them on a 4mm 18x24 white mat and 2" dark wood frame. Also printing some 40" x 70" whihc is over three feet by five feet! Wish you all could come (and hang out with the goddesses)!

I'm not usually excited by camera bodies - I believe that the lens is where the action is, and a camera body just holds the lens and is quickly made obsolete by the latest model. But the announcement by Nikon of a 36 Megapixel, full frame body caught my attention.
Back in the late 70's, I had to make the decision in the camera store ... Nikon or Canon. There were other choices back then (Colt or S&W, 45 or 9mm...but that's another story).
Back then, Nikon was regarded as the choice of pros, and Canon was more of an up-and coming enthusiast brand. Besides, as the camera store guy told me, Nikon never changes its lens mount, so I will be able to mount all my Nikon lenses on future bodies.
Nikon lost the pro market to Canon more than 15 years ago, but this new model looks to help them regain some of that market. Costing "only" US $3,000, it has a 36 MP sensor, is full frame and has state-of-the-art video features that I don't care about. It can also use Nikon lenses designed for APS-C sensors, and will render a 15MP image ... not bad. The huge sensor size is impressive, but it's noise that matters, not sensor size. Bigger and bigger megapixels is a feature pushed by the manufacturers and is only important for bragging rights by insecure dads at Sunday barbecues.
"Yeah Bill, I got the new 22 MP model with 931 point autofocus" . Ooooo ! Ahhhh !
Apparently, it has most of the features of the $6,000 Nikon D3. It replaces the D700 model. There is also a D800E model with no AE filter. Resolution is expected to be the same as a medium format digital camera. Wow...
I could see getting one of these in about a year, after the price settles down a bit...but I still like the Sony mirrorless bodies, and 24 MP is more than enough.

Claimed to be one of the very first 12 megapixel cameraphones to be released anywhere, the Sony Ericsson Satio (U1i) is one cool product. It is certainly at least as good as any phone in this series as can be seen by enlarging the picture until it gets blurred. Unlike most of the others you can read the name on the shop in the background when enlarged. The video is also excellent, rivalling the Nokia N 97, its main competitor.

Some (almost) final edits for December's Los Angeles Gallery Show! Printing them on metallic paper at 13" x 19" and mounting and framing them on a 4mm 18x24 white mat and 2" dark wood frame. Also printing some 40" x 70" whihc is over three feet by five feet! Wish you all could come (and hang out with the goddesses)!

Preparing for some gallery shows this fall to celebrate 100,000,000 views! Printing a few dozen photographs in ~ 30"x40" formats and mounting/framing. Here are some close-to-final edits. These were shot with Nikon's best D800 with the 14-24mm wide-angle Nikkor lens. 7 exposures were taken at 1 EV intervals, and combined in photomatix to bring out the shadows and highlights.

Nikon D800E Dr. Elliot McGucken Fine Art Photography for Los Angeles Gallery Show!
Yet more photos and more final edits! I was up at 4:30 AM the past four days shooting sunrises! Awesome sunrises over Point Dume thie time of year in Malibu.
Then I spent all day today moving over 75 large photos into the gallery! Most of these are framed and matted with 13"x19" metallic prints and an 18"x24" mat and a 3" wood-grain black frame! They look awesome! Stop on by Bel Air Camera's Gallery downstairs if you are close to UCLA or in Westwood. Give me a head's up, and I will meet you there if I'm free.
I thought I was done a couple months ago, but art is never done until it's done, and even then. . . Will be busy printing and framing in nice large, matted formats and frames and museum glass! Five of these photos will be printed on 40" x 60" floating wall mounted metal sheets! I think I know which--will share photos of the photos hanging on the walls!
And I am mounting some on plexiglass/acryllic--front mounting them! Some I am printing on lossy fuji-crystal archival paper too, and then front mounting 40"x60" versions to plexiglass--will send photos!
The secret to HDR photography is that you want people to say, "Woe dude--that's unreal!" And not, "Dude--that's not real!" "Unreal" is the word they use when they're trying to figure out the photo--what makes it cool--is it a photo? Is it painted? How'd it come to be--how'd you bend the light that way? "That's not real," is what they say if you have the saturation/HDR/ etc. turned up too high. :)
Some (almost) final edits for the Los Angeles Gallery Show! Printing them on metallic paper at 13" x 19" and mounting and framing them on a 4mm 18x24 white mat and 2" dark wood frame. Also printing some 40" x 70" whihc is over three feet by five feet! Wish you all could come (and hang out with the goddesses)!

Yay! I booked a major photography show at a major LA gallery in December! Will also be giving some lectures on the story--the Hero's Journey Mythology--behind the photography!
Preparing for some gallery shows this fall to celebrate 250,000,000 views! Printing a few dozen photographs in ~ 30"x40" formats and mounting/framing. Here are some close-to-final edits. These were shot with Nikon's best D800 with the 14-24mm wide-angle Nikkor lens. 7 exposures were taken at 1 EV intervals, and combined in photomatix to bring out the shadows and highlights.

Exploring the depth of field of f/2.8 on the Nikon D3x's 24 megapixel full frame resolution using a fruit vendor against Sule Pagoda in the heart of Yangon.
Sule Pagoda
Sule Pagoda is the oldest stupa in Yangon, pre-dating both the Shwedagon and Botatataung Pagodas. Local tradition tells that Sule occupies the site which was once the home of a powerful Nat (spirit or minor deity), who was the only one to remember where missing Buddha Relics were buried.
Like the Botatataung Pagoda, Sule is a San-daw-kyo Payamyar, or a Pagoda built to contain a Relic of the Hair of Buddha, but unlike the hollow Botataung, the Sula stupa is a solid form without entrance.
The Sule pagoda is relatively small, especially compared to the Shwedagon Pagoda, and measures 7x7 meters and rising to 43 meters. The age of Sule Pagoda's chedi still shows in the similarity to the form and function of South Indian relic mounds, or chedi, regardless of the many changes over the centuries following local architectural forms. The central chedi is currently octagonal, after being enlarged by Queen Sawbu in the 15th century, and is approached by four covered stairways, following the four directions of the compass. Each is covered with minor temples, typically gifted by local merchants hoping to reduce their reincarnations. Similarly, the chedi is surrounded by ten bronze bells inscribed with their donor's names. None of the surrounding architecture is older than a century.
Sule Square
Rangoon, as Yangon was called in the British colonial period, was developed on a grid like street layout being devised in 1852, using Sule Pagoda as its centre. Consequently Sule Pagoda is surrounded by some of the most impressive Victorian architecture, including Yangon City Hall, the High Court and the Main Post Office.
Sule Square in front of Sule Pagoda and flanked by the imposing colonial style City Hall on one side and Maha Bandula Garden on the other, was the rallying point for the 8888 uprising of 1988 and the Saffron Revolution of 2007. Both times thousands of monks gathered to pray around Sule Pagoda in anti-government and pro-democracy protest, and both times the Pagoda bore silent witness to the brutal reaction by the military regime.
Yangon
Yangon traces its roots to the 6th century AD, when it was founded by the dominant Mon ethnic group of what is today Lower Burma. The Shwedagon Pagoda was the original centre of the then small village known as Dagon. in 1755 Dagon was captured by King Alaungpaya of the Kongbaung Dynasty, which became the Third Burmese Empire. Dagon expanded rapidly and was renamed Yangon. Yangon is the more correct phonetic pronunciation of the city's name, being a combination of the words Yan and Koun meaning 'enemies' and 'running out'. In combination it can be translated as 'End of Strife'. The interchangeable pronunciation or the letters 'y' and 'r' in Burmese is the most likely explanation for the English name of 'Rangoon' for the city. The current military dictatorship has officially renamed the city from Rangoon to Yangon in 1989.
The ex-capital, but still often mistakenly identified as the capital, lies on the delta of the Yangon and Bago rivers, giving good transport access for commerce, but leaving the city exposed to invasion. The regime's generals therefore relocated the capital 320km inland to to Pyinmana in November 2005, which was then little more than a village. By March 2006 the created city was called Naypyidaw and designated Capital of Myanmar (or Burma). Today it is the third largest city in the country, after Yangon and Mandalay.
Myanmar
Burma, or Myanmar as it has been renamed by the military dictatorship, derives its name from the Burmese word Bamar, which is pronounced 'Bama', and became 'Burma' in the colonial days. However the in old Burmese it is pronounced Mranma or Myanmah, thus giving rise to Myanmar. The renaming remains the subject of debate, where the UN refers to 'Myanmar', the US, UK and France still refer to 'Burma', and yet the New York Times and The Wall Street Journal refer to 'Myanmar'. We've followed the UN and used current naming throughout this collection of photos, however with the alternatives included in the tags.

Spring in the Malibu Canyons! Nikon D800E Dr. Elliot McGucken Fine Art Photography for Los Angeles HDR Gallery Show!
Yet more photos and more final edits! I was up at 4:30 AM the past four days shooting sunrises! Awesome sunrises over Point Dume thie time of year in Malibu.
Then I spent all day today moving over 75 large photos into the gallery! Most of these are framed and matted with 13"x19" metallic prints and an 18"x24" mat and a 3" wood-grain black frame! They look awesome! Stop on by Bel Air Camera's Gallery downstairs if you are close to UCLA or in Westwood. Give me a head's up, and I will meet you there if I'm free.
I thought I was done a couple days ago for December's LA Gallery show, but art is never done until it's done, and even then. . . Will be busy printing and framing in nice large, matted formats and frames and museum glass! Five of these photos will be printed on 40" x 60" floating wall mounted metal sheets! I think I know which--will share photos of the photos hanging on the walls!
And I am mounting some on plexiglass/acryllic--front mounting them! Some I am printing on lossy fuji-crystal archival paper too, and then front mounting 40"x60" versions to plexiglass--will send photos!
The secret to HDR photography is that you want people to say, "Woe dude--that's unreal!" And not, "Dude--that's not real!" "Unreal" is the word they use when they're trying to figure out the photo--what makes it cool--is it a photo? Is it painted? How'd it come to be--how'd you bend the light that way? "That's not real," is what they say if you have the saturation/HDR/ etc. turned up too high. :)
Some (almost) final edits for December's Los Angeles Gallery Show! Printing them on metallic paper at 13" x 19" and mounting and framing them on a 4mm 18x24 white mat and 2" dark wood frame. Also printing some 40" x 70" whihc is over three feet by five feet! Wish you all could come (and hang out with the goddesses)!

Preparing for some gallery shows this fall to celebrate 100,000,000 views! Printing a few dozen photographs in ~ 30"x40" formats and mounting/framing. Here are some close-to-final edits. These were shot with Nikon's best D800 with the 14-24mm wide-angle Nikkor lens. 7 exposures were taken at 1 EV intervals, and combined in photomatix to bring out the shadows and highlights.
Rather large HDR (high dynamic range) photo--you can see great detail both near and far! View the detail at full size!
