These were shot with Nikon's best D800 with the 14-24mm wide-angle Nikkor lens. 7 exposures were taken at 1 EV intervals, and combined in photomatix to bring out the shadows and highlights.

Well, I went back through over 100 photos tonight and re-edited them! I thought I was done a couple days ago for December's LA Gallery show, but art is never done until it's done, and even then. . . Will be busy printing and framing in nice large, matted formats and frames and museum glass! Five of these photos will be printed on 40" x 60" floating wall mounted metal sheets! I think I know which--will share photos of the photos hanging on the walls!
The secret to HDR photography is that you want people to say, "Woe dude--that's unreal!" And not, "Dude--that's not real!" "Unreal" is the word they use when they're trying to figure out the photo--what makes it cool--is it a photo? Is it painted? How'd it come to be--how'd you bend the light that way? "That's not real," is what they say if you have the saturation/HDR/ etc. turned up too high. :)
Some (almost) final edits for December's Los Angeles Gallery Show! Printing them on metallic paper at 13" x 19" and mounting and framing them on a 4mm 18x24 white mat and 2" dark wood frame. Also printing some 40" x 70" whihc is over three feet by five feet! Wish you all could come (and hang out with the goddesses)!
Let me know your favs.!

OK so this is the first image I have uploaded or AGES... but it kind of makes a statement. You see, I do love cameras, I've had quite a few digital monsters and and in more recent times the monsters have given way to more discreet smaller wonders. So I was looking through my selection of odds and sods cameras purchased from garage sales and the like and my attention was drawn to a Canon Powershot S2 IS which hailed from about 2004. This was a 5 Megapixel camera which at the time people were paying upwards of $700 in Australia not to forget the really expensive 1 Gb SD card for over $150. My friend had one and he still uses his to this day - raves about it. So why is this camera SO good? well for its age it has more features that you can poke a stick at, check it out rotating screen, viewfinder with diopter adjustment, pop up flash, quite good movie recording, bracketing, exposure adjustment, a whopping 12 times optical zoom (36 to 432mm equiv), good image stabilisation and the list just goes on. So I went out for a bike ride down West Beach and took a hundred pics or so and looked at the images as imported to Lightroom. I was really surprised just how good they were. OK so it was in full sunshine in the middle of the day but it WAS small enough to fit into a bicycle handlebar bag without problem.
So I started to reflect on the collective lust for more megapixels and more features when in reality this cheap little $5 garage sale camera (in mint condition) does a pretty damn good job. Even at fourteen years old and 5 megapixels it still allowed me to crop and play around in Lightroom a bit.
So do I sell my OMD EM5ii? well no but I think I might just start using this camera a little more often!
Happy shooting!

I shot in DX mode which crops away the extra pixels and takes me 1.5X closer while allowing for up to 7 FPS with the Nikon D810's Nikon MB-D12 Battery Grip using the 8 AA battery option! 8 Duracels took me through around 3,000 shots no problem--maybe more! I was shooting at the equivalent of 900mm with the 1.5x crop factor! Pretty close! Had I gone with the Nikon D4s, I would have gotten 12 fps, but no DX crop factor, as the sensor has only around 14mp, compared to the d810's 36 megapixels! Sure the larger pixel size on the Nikon D4s full frame sensor comes in handy indoors or at night, but in the bright sun, there's more than enough light for the smaller pixels in crop mode! Sure we lose some pixels from the outer edges when shooting in DX crop mode, but most of those pixels would be cropped away in lightroom anyway. And the smaller files make the memory cards last longer, while also upping the FPS to 7 shots per second! Not quite 12 FPS, but still awesome and enough I felt!
What a beautiful way to test the Nikon D810 and Tamron 150-600mm zoom lens for sports photography!

Shot using 155 images at 300mm; each image was from a stack of 5 images which were median filtered for sharpness. Follow-up on the 120 Megapixel pano I shot last year :]
This was a photo I took of a real sunset in Corvallis, Oregon, most likely September or October of 2000. About 6 years later, I put it here on Flickr, where it has been for a long time without any albums, groups, tags, description etc. Tonight I decided to spruce it up a little bit and give it some categories, etc. I did give it some contrast and some saturation, but I did not change the fascinating fan of light one single bit. This was shot from downtown Corvallis proper out toward the Marys Peak area. Marys Peak was named for Mary Lloyd, a pioneer girl, but the apostrophe was dropped long ago.

Yet more photos and more final edits! I was up at 4:30 AM the past four days shooting sunrises! Awesome sunrises over Point Dume thie time of year in Malibu.
Then I spent all day today moving over 75 large photos into the gallery! Most of these are framed and matted with 13"x19" metallic prints and an 18"x24" mat and a 3" wood-grain black frame! They look awesome! Stop on by Bel Air Camera's Gallery downstairs if you are close to UCLA or in Westwood. Give me a head's up, and I will meet you there if I'm free.

In an attempt to capture a large swath of sky at high resolution, I've spent the summer capturing 28 panels (7 across, 4 down) of the constellation Cygnus the Swan (aka the Northern Cross).
Shot through a narrowband hydrogen-alpha filter, this field shows off an entertaining area of our Milky Way galaxy, full of glowing hydrogen gas and dark dust lanes ... in fact the gas and dust almost dwarf the stars themselves.
The area includes several interesting nebulae, including the North America Nebula and Pelican Nebula at upper left, the Butterfly Nebula, at center right, and the small but fascinating Crescent Nebula at far lower right. Running down the center of the scene is a dark swath called the Northern Coal Sack, a virtual river of dust and gas that obscures many of the stars behind it.
This region covers approximately 12x12 degrees of the sky ... for reference, this is a little bit larger than the size of your palm held at arm's length. North is up.
Details for the astro-nerds:
This is my largest astrophoto project to date ... averaging 2.5 hours of exposure per panel, this image represents over 70 hours of exposure time (selected from over 100 hours of data, as some images were rejected for poor quality).
The full resolution image is approx 13000 x 11000 pixels; a 141 megapixel image.
Unfortunately, Flickr's uploader didn't accept the full-res file. So the version uploaded here is 67% of the actual max resolution, at 8725 x 7261 pixels. To see the full-res zoomable version, please visit www.sky-candy.ca .
Captured at 328mm focal length (f3.9), with a small pixel size (5.4u), it has a sampling rate of 3.39 arc-seconds/pixel. I believe this a relatively high resolution image, at least relative to most large amateur astro-mosaics.
Telescope = Takahashi FSQ 85 EDX with .73 reducer (f/3.9)
Camera = QSI 583 wsg
Mount = SkyWatcher EQ6 Pro
Software = capture and stacking in MaximDL, alignment and mosaic in Autopano Pro, processing in PS CS5
Exposure (minutes) = average 160m / panel, 28 panels, over 70h total

Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness
Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun
Conspiring with him how to load and bless
With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run;
To bend with apples the moss'd cottage-trees,
And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;
To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells
With a sweet kernel; to set budding more,
And still more, later flowers for the bees,
Until they think warm days will never cease,
For Summer has o'er-brimm'd their clammy cells. --To Autumn. by John Keats
This is a graphical comparison of JPG resolutions (in MegaPixels) of all digital cameras I have bought and used since 2003. The size of a rectangle in pixels is exactly the real size (or rather resolution) of a picture taken with the appropriate camera.
But, this picture says absolutely nothing about absolute sensor sizes!
The year in parentheses is the year I bought the respective camera (which is not necessarily the year in which the camera came into the market).
Rounding "a little" like that
20.4 = approx. 20,
11.1 = approx. 10,
6.3 = approx. 6.25,
interestingly, there are only two prime numbers needed (2 and 5) to calculate all (approximated) sizes and therefore all ratios between the different (approximated) sizes:
80 = 16 x 5 = (2^4) x 5
50 = 2 x 25 = 2 x (5^2)
20 = 4 x 5 = (2^2) x 5
16 = (2^4)
10 = 2 x 5
8 = (2^3)
6.25 = 25 / 4 = (5^2) / (2^2)
and consequently
80 / 50 = 8 / 5 = (2^3) / 5
80 / 20 = 4 = (2^2)
80 / 16 = 5
80 / 8 = 10 = 2 x 5
80 / 6.5 = 128 / 10 = 64 / 5 = (2^6) / 5
80 / 5 = 16 = (2^4)
50 / 20 = 5 / 2
50 / 16 = 25 / 8 = (5^2) / (2^3)
50 / 10 = 5
50 / 6.25 = 8 = (2^3)
50 / 5 = 10 = 2 x 5
20 / 16 = 5 / 4 = 5 / (2^2)
20 / 8 = 5 / 2
20 / 6.25 = 32 / 10 = 16 / 5 = (2^4) / 5
20 / 5 = 4 = (2^2)
16 / 10 = 8 / 5 = (2^3) / 5
16 / 8 = 2
16 / 6.25 = 256 / 100 = 64 / 25 = (2^6) / (5^2)
16 / 5 = (2^4) / 5
10 / 8 = 5 / (2^2)
10 / 6.25 = 16 / 10 = 8 / 5 = (2^3) / 5
10 / 5 = 2
8 / 6.25 = 128 / 100 = 32 / 25 = (2^5) / (5^2)
8 / 5 = (2^3) / 5
6.25 / 5 = 5 / 4 = 5 / (2^2)
Last but not least another interesting fact is, that increasing resolution by factor 4, what needed some generations of cameras (or sensors) before, is done now with one and the same sensor in one single camera, the OM-D E-M1X:
5 MP ---> 5 MP x 4 = 20 MP (for me this took 16 years)
20 MP ---> 20 MP x 4 = 80 MP (OM-D E-M1X)

And I am mounting some on plexiglass/acryllic--front mounting them! Some I am printing on lossy fuji-crystal archival paper too, and then front mounting 40"x60" versions to plexiglass--will send photos!
The Leica S2. Simply Awesome
A Medium-Format Sensor in a '35mm' Body
By Allan Weitz
Print Close
Leica's surprise announcement of the Leica S2 pretty much blows the bubbles off every other press release coming out of Photokina, or anywhere else in the photo world as of late. Sure, reasonably priced, full-frame DSLRs are cool; but a 37.5-megapixel medium-format sensor that's 56% larger (30x45 mm) than the so-called competition, and in a smaller body no less, is downright awesome.
Ballyhoo aside, the Leica S2 is truly a gorgeous machine. Similar in style to Leica's classic R8/R9 SLR cameras, it is clean looking and understated as compared to all other DSLRs on the market. Buttons, toggles, and switches are minimal, and the menus displayed on the camera's 3' 460,000-dot LCD are as simple as those found on Leica's first DSLR venture, the Module R. The new camera, designed and built in Germany, features an all-metal body that is both dust and waterproof.
While frame-per-second burst-rate figures haven't been released, Leica claims the new camera is twice as fast as Hasselblad's H-series cameras, which depending on the model can capture images at a bit over one frame-per-second.
To compliment the new camera Leica is concurrently introducing seven bayonet-mount S-series lenses that should keep everybody happy. Included in the line-up are a 24mm ultra-wide, 35mm wide, 70mm standard lens, 100mm 'portrait' lens, 120 mm macro, 180mm telephoto, and a 30mm tilt/shift lens. And though autofocus in design (with the exception of the 30 mm tilt/shift), manual focusing with electronic focus-confirmation is also possible with each of the S-series optics. Like the S2 camera body, the new lenses are also water and dustproof.
Aside from a conventional focal-plane shutter in the camera body for wider-aperture lenses, each of the Leica-S optics also contains an internal leaf-shutter to enable high-speed flash sync up to 1/4000th-second.
Images can be captured in a choice of DNG, RAW, and/or JPEG formats onto either CompactFlash or SDHC memory cards. According to Leica you can store up to 400 RAW-format images on a 32GB card. An optional vertical grip that features a second shutter release, control wheel, and space for a second battery will also be available for the new camera. The exact price of the new camera is yet to be announced, but we strongly recommend you start saving up.
Stay tuned for a full-blown test of the Leica S2 in an upcoming newsletter. We don't know about you, but we can't wait.
