Working on feathering a softbox to get fast fall off across a subject. I wanted to use a softbox to light the face well but then have the light fall off quickly, down the torso. We used my Lumopro mini-boom / lightstand combo to angle the softbox. Here, I believe that we have it angled up and toward camera around the level of the subject's shoulders.
I think that I never got the look I was going for in the past because I didn't realize how far the softbox needs to be turned to get the light to fall off this fast. It's not sufficient to be past the "edge" of the softbox. The part of the subject that I want to get no light from the softbox basically shouldn't be able to see any of the face of the softbox. We turn the softbox so that the subject's face is very much to the side of the softbox but can still see most of the face of the softbox. But by the time we get to the subject's waist, the face of the softbox should not be visible at all. Using that approach, I can more easily gauge how the light will fall off.
For these photos, we wanted to get a little more ambient. At Steven's suggestion, I tried using the overhead lights as a graphical element in the photo. In this image, I was trying to positon the subject to block a reflection that we were getting in the background. Unfortunately, that put him a little out of alignment with the overhead lights. I do like the fill light in this image better since it retains more detail in the shadow side of the subject's face.

We had a blast at the first meetup for Tam Makers, our new makerspace in Mill Valley. We hosted this free event at the wood shop at Tamalpais High School in Mill Valley on June 8, 2016.
A diverse group of people came to the visit the shop, learn about our classes and discuss how to grow our maker community. Participants ranged from experienced artists, technologists, makers and woodworkers, to people interested in learning new skills, as well as high school and middle school students and their parents.
We opened the shop at 6pm and folks started to connect right away, checking out some of our demos, showing off recent projects and touring the space. At 7pm, we gave a presentation on Tam Makers, and talked about our first courses, meetups and tools for adults and youth. We then discussed these programs as a group and received some really helpful feedback.
Most people were very interested in participating in Tam Makers and using the makerspace regularly. They also liked the mix of classes, ranging from maker art to technology and woodworking. Some people signed up for classes on the spot and most wanted to join more meetups. Many offered to volunteer as well. One person said this event had a great community feeling, unlike more commercially motivated makerspaces.
We’re really happy that this first meetup went so well and that so many folks want to participate actively. We look forward to collaborating with our new maker friends very soon!

Green Change hosted a Clean Energy Meetup in Mill Valley on June 12, 2019.
This community meetup was moderated by Fabrice Florin and featured these guest speakers:
• Ryan Maecker from Marin Clean Energy (MCE) on their Deep Green 100% Renewable Electricity
• Alexandra Ramey from Rising Sun Center for Opportunity on their Green House Call Service
We presented three climate actions that people can take to use clean energy in their own homes:
• Use Renewable Electricity
• Get a Home Energy Checkup
• Install Solar Panels
After the talks, we discussed our personal experiences about using clean energy in our homes and connected experts with people who are just getting started. Solar energy developer David Kunhardt shared helpful tips about installing solar panels and answered questions from participants considering this home improvement. Other participants shared practical information about using renewable energy in their own lives and helping their communities do the same.
This free community event took place at the Sewerage Agency of Southern Marin (SASM) at 450 Sycamore Avenue in Mill Valley, across from the MV Middle School.

So today I went on a photoshoot with one of the meetup groups I am a member of. We visited the Gladding McBean terra cotta Factory in Lincoln, California. It would be easy to think this would not be an interesting place for a photoshoot, but nothing could be further from the truth. This old factory is a fascinating location full of textures, color, interesting shapes and a multitude of differently lit scenes. In some places the roof has rusted away and sunlight streams in and creates interesting effects, in other areas the old windows provide patterns and partially light large hallways and areas that are full of castings, plaster molds and even artwork that is on display.
The place has recently started opening the factory up for photography tours. I think that is wonderful and see it as a much appreciated recognition of our wish to visit places like this and not be hassled by tour members who have no patience for photographers. Tripods are allowed and there were about 12 photographers on this photo shoot.
The place is heaven for folk that like HDR and what the HDR process does to textured walls and such. I’ll be posting more from this location in the near future.
Below is an example of the wonderful colors on display here. I just love the textures, the warm stone walls and the blue in the windows of this shot.

I really like the way that MeetUp provides examples of how others have introduced themselves in this screen. It makes the white space so much less confronting and significantly increases the likelihood that I'll actually complete this field - both because it's helping me with ideas, and also because I can see that others have done so (social proof)
