Abused And Abandoned Jungle Dogs.
Back Story .........................................
This is taking place at The Dog Palace.
The Nurse Nun holds another abandoned puppy in front of the bingo room.
So here's the current status as of right now at The Dog Palace.
In the last couple of months all the monks who took up residence here have all moved on. The majority of them are on a pilgrimage up North.
The Leg Man still lives on the 2nd floor. The monkeys constantly raid the place and I show up every couple of days.
In the mean time The Nurse Nun comes over twice a day to feed and medicate Mama. She also feeds the two new puppies, Mr Spooky and Mama.
"When will the monks return you ask ?"
Not sure, they come an go on their own mystic schedule........ ;-)
Now, it is what it is .. Been there done that .. I'll gladly do it again.
Early morning Mama will see my happy face once again. Plan for today was taking her in for a final follow up.
Well, today is The King of Thailands Birthday. This is a very big deal here. It's also Fathers Day. Needless to say Mama will see the dog doctor tomorrow. No Big Deal ..... ;-)
.
Next photo is Rocky, and my feet.
PS: This is Baby Legs The Zoomer .

It was obvious that Bernadette was not a typical nurse. Her healing methods seemed unconventional and Aiden began to suspect why the "witch" commentary was made. However he chose to trust her; not fear her. She seemed to know exactly what she was doing plus she genuinely cared for Vincent. It showed in how she had fought so passionately for him thus far and how she tended to him.
Cleaning and stitching Vincent's wounds closed had been a series of long, horrible, and exhausting tasks that took several hours. But the pair didn't lose heart and kept working through the night. Aiden worked hard as the muscle for Bernadette and did everything she asked of him whether it be turn Vincent one way or change out the dirty water for a fresh bucket from the public well two blocks away.
Bernadette kept Vincent as heavily medicated as much as she safely could. Thankfully he'd stayed asleep through it all. She even had begun to give him sips of her concoction of tea containing bhang and valerian root after lighting some lavender on the nightstand. Checking his temperature, she breathed a little easier. It hadn't gotten any worse. Thank God!
A short time later, Bernadette was out on the terrace having some soothing lemon tea. Already the first touches of dawn were touching the darkness with promise of a new day. She turned the lemon over in her tea gently with the spoon, sighing softly as she gazed into her cup seemingly lost in thought.
"May I join you, Miss Dubois?"
"Oh, of course."
Bernadette turned to gaze up at Aiden who joined her on the terrace with his own fresh cup of lemon tea. She gazed up at him and quirked her brow before taking a small sip of her tea. "Though, I believe we are well past the point of formalities at this point. Please call me Bernadette and I'll call you Aiden. Deal?"
"Deal."
Aiden chuckled and took a sip of his own tea before turning to lean against the ledge. Closing his eyes, he took a deep inhale through his nose and exhaled through his mouth. It felt good to take a moment to just let some of it out.
"Good. Just let it out. You did great, Aiden," Bernadette spoke softly and sincerely. "I couldn't have done this without you. Vincent wouldn't have lived to see tomorrow for sure if you hadn't been here. He's not just my cousin, you know? He's more like a brother to me; a big brother whom I love dearly. So...thank you. No matter what happens after this, thank you."
Aiden's face went a bright shade of pink but he found himself smiling. "Aw, shucks." But before Aiden could thank her or say anything else, Bernadette continued, "We may have cleaned and closed the wounds but he's not safe yet." She sighed softly and stared into her cup. "Now, we wait and pray that the fever and infection doesn't take him. But...I will say that this is good. He's holding down liquids and his fever isn't spiking. With any luck, it will break soon."
They fell into a tired, quiet silence while they sipped their tea. While they stood there, Aiden thought of something: Bernadette hadn't once asked him how Vincent had gotten into this situation. She'd come and started helping without demanding any explanations. She must be dying to know why her beloved cousin was in this predicament! Aiden certainly would be! He wasn't sure if Vincent would want his cousin knowing the details of what happened.
Bernadette peeked up at Aiden for a long moment. He was so lost in thought that he hadn't noticed her waiting for him so patiently. She smirked slightly and cleared her throat softly. Once he blinked to signal he was back from his thoughts, Bernadette stated, "I'm sure you told the bobbies it was a robbery or the like but I know this isn't a random mugging."
Oh, she had Aiden's attention now. Was she about to ask what happened? He parted his lips but nothing came out so he closed them into a thin line. What could he say to that? Before he could formulate a response, Bernadette spoke up again and offered him a slight smile. "Whatever happened, I'm glad you were there with him." Then she gave a resigned sigh and set down her teacup and bodily turned to face Aiden. Then she gazed right up into his eyes as bold as brass as was her apparent style.
"I have something to say," she explained calmly. "Well... more like I have something to ask of you. But even if you say you won't do it, I understand, but it's a matter of life or death and I need you to promise me that my request stays between us and never leaves this terrace."
"I promise."
"No, I need more than that."
Bernadette held out her right hand and extended her pinky finger towards him and stared into his eyes. He glanced at her finger then stared right back into her eyes as she told him, "The pinky promise is the most sacred of promises. If you break the promise, you cut off your finger." And something flashed in her eyes which gave Aiden the impression that the condition of the broken promise was only if she didn't get to him first. A moment later his hand came up and hooked his right pinkie with hers securely.
"I promise. Your request doesn't leave this terrace."
They stared into each other's eyes for a long moment with their pinkies hooked. Bernadette gave a single nod and released his finger and their hands returned to their sides.
"Thank you. I want to ask you how this really happened but I will not. And don't tell me. It's probably best I do not know. I do not meddle in my cousin's private affairs for good reason. However, should he not survive this ordeal...I...I ask you to speak to my father on his behalf and tell him what happened in detail. Help him find the bastard who did this. Please."
There was a sort of desperation in her voice and to be honest Aiden was taken aback by her request. No, it didn't seem out of the ordinary that she'd want to avenge her cousin. It was the imperative level of secrecy that surprised him. Well, a lot of things she said and did surprised him including how knowledgeable she seemed to be about things without having to be told. It was almost as if she could read minds! But the kind of secrecy she was asking for was not as if she was asking a friend to keep a secret for her. No. This was something much, much more.
But something else she had said had struck another chord with him. It was clear she feared whoever had done this was still out there. To be honest, so did Aiden. He'd not forgotten that his informant had implied that Vincent may have possibly been set up for this whole situation. Hopefully, Vincent would wake up soon so he could tell him what he'd found out!
"I swear I will speak to your father on his behalf if Vincent cannot."
He reached out with his hand and offered his pinky. Bernadette reached out and took his pinkie with hers and squeezed gently before releasing his finger.
"Thank you, Aiden, truly."
"Of course. Hopefully he will be able to speak for himself but when can we expect your father?"
"In about a month. Then he'll be here for the remainder of the Summer as he does every year."
"Oh?" Aiden smiled slightly as he saw the corners of her lips turn upwards into a soft smile as she spoke of her father despite the severity of the situation. "Is that something you look forward to?"
Bernadette smiled more and picked up her teacup once again. "Every year since I was a wee little girl," she explained. "He is a very busy man and his work keeps him from home most of the year. But every Summer he comes home to be with Mama and us girls to make up for it. Spoils us rotten and everything. He's a doting father and loving husband. You'd never guess by looking at him though." She chuckled and drained the rest of her tea with a content sigh to which Aiden did the same.
"More tea?" she asked to which Aiden responded with a grateful smile and nod.
"Yes, please and thank you."
Honestly, the more Aiden thought about it, the more like a witch she seemed to be. Between burning herbs, odd medicines, her forward personality and how she seemed to read his mind was rather fascinating! So what if she was a witch? He liked her and could imagine becoming great friends with her!
"Oh, and Aiden?" she said as she began to put more herbs into their teacups. "It would mean everything to me if you don't go about labeling medicinal practices as 'witchcraft' or anything of the sort. I have enough people like Benjamin Burke in my life if you know what I mean."
She did it again! For a crazy second, he almost laughed! However, the seriousness of the situation won out and he insisted, "I'd never! Especially not after everything you've done! I'm grateful for you!"
The sincerity in Aiden's voice made her smile softly as she continued to prepare their tea. "As I am for you. Thank you for your discretion. I am but a humble nurse who merely dabbles in traditional medicine."
They both looked at each other with small knowing smiles. Yes, Aiden thought, they would be friends. He was glad to have met Bernadette.
"Though I will say," she mused as she left the tea to brew so she could check on Vincent, "I'm surprised Damien was not there with you."
Aiden felt an involuntary sense of frustration as Damien was brought up. It's not like Damien had known better, but if Aiden had done what the man had suggested, Vincent would STILL be in that damn private jail possibly dead by now, all while Aiden would likely be on Leon's Claw asleep! His emotions must have shown on his face because when he glanced at her as she passed by she was looking at him a little inquisitively.
"I didn't tell him before I le- I mean, he doesn't know yet." Aiden cleared his throat as he'd caught himself. "The constable told me he was going to try to contact your family and Damien. I'm surprised no one's come yet either. The sun's already almost up."
Bernadette shook her head as Aiden followed behind her and sounded oddly relieved. "They won't be able to find Damien, I imagine. I'm fairly certain he's staying with his sister and her husband and they have a different family name. As for my family, I sent one of the hospital boys with an urgent letter for my mother to tell her I am handling things here. She knows not to come here until I send for her. Thankfully, I know who Damien's sister is so I can send for him as well when the time comes. If he's not there, I'm certain she will know where to find him."
"Why didn't you send for him before?" he asked innocently as they made it to Vincent's bedside. Was it just him or was Vincent looking more flushed? Beside him, Bernadette frowned slightly and seemed to be thinking along the same lines as she checked his temperature.
"Well, if I'm being honest, he means well but he can be a little conceited and overbearing, don't you think? I'd rather not deal with the extra stress if I can help it."
Aiden couldn't help the amused snort that escaped him as she so bluntly stated her opinion. "I've been bunking with the man for the better part of a whole season. What do you think?" Bernadette gave a small, "Heh." But that was all she said about that. Her focus was no longer on their conversation about Damien.
"His fever is getting worse."
Bernadette had been afraid of this. Now that the worst of the fever was hitting, all they could do was wait for it to burn through Vincent as his body fought against the infection. Bernadette sent Aiden for some fresh water and got to work preparing to help Vincent fight the worsening fever.
Afterwards, there wasn't much Aiden was going to be able to do to help (at least for now) so Bernadette nudged Aiden to get some sleep. At first, he didn't seem very happy with the idea and had tried insisting she should sleep first instead. But even as he began his argument he was already yawning at the thought of finally getting some sleep after such an exhausting series of ordeals. Bernadette won in the end and sent him off to the other room after a cup of lavender tea for himself with the promise to let him know if there were any changes.
At first Aiden didn't think he could fall asleep. As he laid there in Vincent's sitting room on the couch, he tossed and turned for several minutes. All of a sudden, he found a comfortable position and Aiden passed out hard. All the stress and exertions had finally taken their toll.

Oh, she's hot but a psycho
So left but she's right, though
At night, she's screamin'
"I'm-ma-ma-ma out my mind"
She'll make you curse, but she a blessin'
She'll rip your shirt within a second
You'll be coming back, back for seconds

"A backdrop panoramic montage of dramatic landscapes and an asphalt ribbon of a road that can only be measured in stops for gasoline and all those photographs seen but not taken. While the space between is strung out on a thread of cigarettes and coffee and medicated by this, that, or the other, if I'm lucky. Where the odometer counts my breaths in miles driven in an hour and the AC wheezes like a ventilator. This is my life support, this is my quarantine, and this is why I cannot seem to find the words to say out loud. I am accelerating and everything has so much distance between it and one point is so far from the next that I lose my way between them sometimes."

called no# 1. Alright now we can move along ...............
Late yesterday when uploading the photo and dialog
it was strongly mentioned if I had enough energy left
that today I would go get Legs and take her to the Dr.
Well, my old bones feel pretty beat up so today will be
spent doing small chores close to home. Tomorrow is
Wednesday and the dog doctor is closed. In-fact for
some odd reason he will be closed Thursday as well ?
During the down time a trip to medicate Mr Tri-Pod
will happen along with gathering supplies for the dogs.
A couple days of rest is good. No# 1 is here along with her

Quick trip onto campus for my 19th "Squirrel Run" at the University of Michigan since our work from home started to combat COVID-19. Headed in on a very hot sunny day - Sunday July 5th around midday. My squirrel friend Juli noticed a squirrel over at Law who had very bad puffy eyes. This squirrel, who I named Bingo, got the 2nd dose of the medicated pecan today. Her (though maybe more of a His) left eye looks better than the right. She moves around very well - but it would be good to get the puffiness down on her eyes. Will be monitoring her. I also saw Waddles over at Law and lots of squirrels on my quick walk through campus. Glad I got to visit my squirrel friends today. At a personal level, the squirrels cheer me up. They always do. Sending love and virtual hugs from Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Still out with the flu......
But trust me.... I am not THAT heavily medicated :D
Trying out a different lens with Annewiek.
They got me the wrong one however (not full frame) so when I'm better I'll exchange it for a full frame version.Got some interesting ideas with this.

I have been Tagged, and requested to share 11 things about myself that people do not know. Hmmmmm. (Photo taken with the Panasonic DMC-Fz-28)
1) If I were born 35 years later, I would have been heavily medicated as a youngster for ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). Thank God for Sports and growing up in the country and chasing horses and playing in the woods (and loving adults including some great teachers).
2) Baked Goods I absolutely adore. A cinnamon bun with frosting knows no greater fan.
3) I worked for approximately 10 years in higher education; Teaching a number of courses and specializing in Community Building, Human Sexuality, and Human Health Behavior.
4) I find nearly all things regarding the bathroom and body noises Humorous…just ask Dale and Gracie.
5) My Higher Power often comes to me in the form of 4 legs (Dogs).
6) I am in Recovery from addiction. I recently celebrated 11 years clean and sober. Prior to this 11 years I had nearly 8 years of recovery before I thought I was cured and went back to using alcohol. I was wrong!!!
7) I really don’t mind being bald…it’s just a pain keeping my ears clean.
8) I love to cook and eat. One of the main reasons I stay active so I can follow the 80-20 rule; I eat Healthy 80% of the time so I can Eat Cinnamon buns the other 20% (or cream sauces, or ice cream, or Chips and Dip, or Cheese Burgers etc.,).
9) I cry easily over sentimental and joyful things. And that is one of the ways I know I am OK. Emotional “constipation” is no good for this guy.
10) Ten years ago a good man told me I needed a hobby – so I learned how to repair and build computers and networking systems. I have built a few hundred machines since and love the Geeky side of me. Really allows me to charge my batteries from all the social interaction I love so much.
11) I am a sneaker and dress shoe Freak. I have more dress shoes than my honey Dale; we call each other “DIVA”.
And the bonus...I am 10 days away from being "Fartie Five years old".
This shot of Rolo is at the height of his full-out medicated state (Benadryl and Prednisone). Happily, the spring in his step has returned as he is slowly being weaned from the grip of prescription drugs. We're happy the pathologist's assesment is not lymphoma, but rather a potential allergic reaction. Rolo's had a life-long issue with allergies, whether that be from environmental elements such as grass, grains or chicken by-products... With looks like this, he still manages to keep us on our toes, and constantly in our minds.
A special inclusion for all of my deaf viewers, although those of you who can hear are welcome to enjoy it as well!
SOME MUSIC I LIKE:
How did this come about? I think at some point I asked my regular viewers, "What songs do you like?" and I got zilch by way of response. So I figured, you gotta lead by example and I thought I'd put together a list of about 100 songs I really like. But like a hungry snake, the list just kept growing, till now it's getting near 800. Bottom line is, it's all about enjoyment, so here's a bunch of songs from my inner iPod which I enjoyed and I hope you will too.

That's the imaginary playlist for the imaginary radio station KJIM, broadcasting nothing but songs I approve of 24/7 through your imagination. While only 800 may seem restrictive, allow me to inquire whether your own (real) local oldies station actually plays 800 different songs? Or is their playlist actually a lot more narrow? Anyhow, don't be surprised if I add more to this list only sparingly. For now I feel like giving this a break because it's gotten to the point where every time I think of a song I have to check this whole list to make sure it isn't already here.
Fox squirrels at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor on Wednesday January 11th, 2023. It is also the day I make sure I hook up my mange patients with their medicated pecans. Some of them are starting to show some good improvement, and that is nice. Here is wishing you joy, health and peace wherever you are.
Flicker gave me a heap of trouble yesterday, woudn't let me upload anything, or favor and leave comments (I was able to comment on some, it was very selective).
On top of it all, I have a cold :(

My employers have certainly gotten their money's worth out of me this week. We've had a little over 50 boarders (this includes geriatric cats and hospitalized cats). Boarders require not only feeding, cleaning cages and laundering bedding, but they involve doing services on many of them including exams, vaccines, blood work, nail trims, ear cleanings, giving fluids under the skin and medicating.
On average, I'd say that 10% of boarders develop some sort of medical problem that requires calls to the owners and then treatments (things like sneezing, vomiting, diarrhea, not eating...). Then we had a cat yesterday who went into cardiac/respiratory distress. She was in a large cage with her two siblings and they each had "hidy-hole" beds. They all seemed to be relaxed and doing fine until yesterday when Popcorn started laying on her side and having very heavy, labored breathing - almost like she was taking agonal breaths. She required emergency, life-saving measures, calls to the owners, oxygen, chest x-rays... The owner had boarded her cats because of work being done on her house that she thought would be stressful to her cats but when she heard about Popcorn she rushed right over to pick them up and take them home - essentially to say good-bye to Popcorn before euthanizing her.
In addition to the boarders we were overbooked with appointments (we were closed on the 4th of July and everyone in the world who owns a cat decided that their cat was dying on the 5th and 6th of July and needed to bring their cats right out to the vet - Immediately!).
Finally, we had many new boarders that I wanted to take pictures of for their files and to send to their owners along with updates on how their cats were doing.
All of this is not necessarily to complain about my job but to explain why I had no time this week to take pictures of my own cats but I did want something to post for Happy Caturday. So I rushed out this morning, found some shadows and took some pictures.

Hi all you animal lovers.
This is pretty simple... Please tell ten people to each tell a further ten today!
The Animal Rescue Site is having trouble getting enough people to click on it daily so they can meet their quota of getting free food donated every day to abused and neglected animals. It takes less than a minute (about 15 seconds) to go to their site and click on the purple box 'fund food for animals for free'.
This doesn't cost you a thing. Their corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising.
Here's the web site! Please pass it along. www.theanimalrescuesite.com/
Please tell 10 people!!
I saw Stephen Venkman and others had posted a pic and this info and just passing it along...
This pic is of Rock and Scruffy.
When Scruffy's Mom got sick and couldn't feed her babies Rock helped raise the four kittens. The vet couldn't believe how Rock (then only 11 months old)stood with his head on the examination table licking each one as they got their examination and shots. Once they got them home he continued to clean and stimulate them until they were out of danger. He would lay surrounding the kittens as they were bottle fed and medicated and he was always ready to comfort them and never trying to steal their food. When they started to get around he shared his food with them and played with them outside keeping them all in sight. Scruffy weighed only 7 ounces when the others weighed a pound but Rock wouldn't let her die.

Common Langur Presbytis entellus:
The gray langurs are a group of Old World monkeys and make up the entirety of the genus Semnopithecus.
Gray langurs are large and fairly terrestrial, inhabiting open wooded habitats and urban areas on the Indian subcontinent. Until recently they were considered one species, Semnopithecus entellus; now seven distinct species are recognized. When only one species was recognized, it was also called the Hanuman Langur (named after the Hindu vanara divinity Hanuman), the Common Langur and the Entellus Langur.
Gray langurs feed on leaves, fruit, buds and flowers. Their diet, however, is highly seasonable, with mature leaves being eaten only as a fall-back food during the winter months. In the summer, especially before the monsoon season, they are highly frugivorous. They also supplement their diet with insects (up to 25% in some months), tree bark and gum. Their diet is strychnine-rich, and as such, self-medicate themselves with the gum of Sterculia urens, which contains a known laxative (prescribed as 'Normacol' in British hospitals)
Hot early Summer day in Ann Arbor. Saw lots of fox squirrels out and about in Ann Arbor on Tuesday July 9th, 2019 at the University of Michigan. So all sorts of things going on. I did not see "Patches O'Houlihan" today. Patches is a squirrel who had lost most of her fur because of mange on the Law Quad. I reached out to the Friends of Wildlife Michigan and they connected me with someone who has worked up some medicated pecans for me to feed the squirrels. I did see "Justin" - named for the youngest team member on the dodgeball team that Patches coaches - and he has both treatments. I did see "Steve the Pirate" again and gave him the second medicated pecan so all three are set for their initial treatment for mange. Steve the Pirate has something on his left paw - and a bald patch on his left side. Even got my first squirrel pancake of the summer! Taken on Wednesday July 10th, 2019.
Medicated baths help keep his skin less itchy. Last night the girls came to say goodbye to this special boy as they are getting ready to continue on their adventures across the U.S.
Thank you Michelle and Charlotte :-)
Potluck, a very quick meeting, and the Treasury Branch ladies telling about online scams. Interesting to see how all nine guys sat at one table away from the ladies at the other five, and yes, a couple of the seventy-something chaps I've not met did look at me somewhat askance.
Ignorance can be educated and crazy can be medicated, but there's no cure for stupid.

After a long day of running errands and a late lunch, my husband and I were looking forward to some relaxation. I had gone to one of the rooms on the opposite end of the house, when I heard my husband banging on the door and shouting, “What are you doing, get out of here, shoo, go away!” I ran to see what was going on with thoughts racing through my head of a would-be home invader! At first glance, I didn’t see anyone. Worriedly, I asked, “What happened, who was out here?” My husband replied emphatically and with a worried tone in his voice, “It’s a squirrel and look what it did!” It was then that I saw one of my favorite, clay flowerpots, smashed in pieces, the soil from inside it, and the flowers strewn all over the porch! Next, I noticed the “guilty looking” culprit, a young, Eastern Gray Squirrel, clinging to a Halloween-themed blanket that was covering of an old, small chest-of-drawers used for storing various garden tools that is located on the far side of the porch. The young squirrel was hiding on the backside of the chest-of-drawers, much like squirrels do when they are trying to blend into a tree trunk that they scoot up when frightened. It would move down near the base of its new-found hideout, using the decorative blanket to hold onto. Alternately, it would hide in a wound-up electrical cord that had been placed behind the chest, to which my Halloween lights were plugged into. In addition, you could hear the squirrel rustling around and chewing on an old umbrella that it had also knocked down behind the chest in the commotion. Every now and again it would climb to the top of the chest-of-drawers, to peek out, then dive back down, out of sight. My husband and I tried several times more, to bang on the door, use various long objects including a yardstick, a mop handle, and a painter’s pole to gently nudge it out of it’s hiding place and off the porch, but to no avail! It would squeak, run around the porch in an erratic manner, climb the brick wall, or briefly run off the porch as if to finally leave, then run right back behind the chest-of-drawers. By this time, I was getting concerned that this was not normal squirrel behavior and considering that it could be sick and therefore potentially could bite us if we continued our efforts to drive it away. Our local police department has an Animal Control Unit, so I gave a call to the non-emergency number and had to repeat my story twice to the incredulous dispatcher, who asked, “You have a what and where is it?” She said that she would send an officer over to check it out. No doubt, she was probably thinking I was senile or medicated or both and perhaps taking bets in jest, with the other dispatchers that #1. There was no squirrel and that I was hallucinating or #2. If there was a squirrel, it would be long gone by the time an officer arrived.
Meanwhile, I returned to the door to wait and watch for the officer and take photos of the squirrel as “evidence” of its existence. It actually further “incriminated” itself once, by creeping out to sniff the soil and broken flowerpot, then ran right back to its “hideout! The “Animal Control Officer” arrived within five minutes, wearing his mask, and stepped right up to look for the furry, little marauder, who popped its head up for a brief face-to-face appearance, then promptly hid again. My husband, being concerned for the officer’s safety and not wanting to see him get bit, if indeed the squirrel went on the offensive, suggested he get something that would afford him protection. The officer agreed and returned to his vehicle for a large net on a long pole. Officer B (not his full name, to protect his identity) set to work, moving all obstructions or potential other hiding spots for the squirrel and next moved the chest-of-drawers! The crouched squirrel ran right between the officer’s legs and ran circles around the porch. He gently prodded the squirrel off the porch for a moment, but it ran back up again and crouched momentarily under the bench. He prodded it once more and finally, it fled, but only a few feet away into the flower garden nearby. The officer followed the squirrel, who finally took to a full run, down the street and out of sight! We gave profuse thanks to Officer B, asking him if this was “the nuttiest call he’s ever had.” He replied that it ranked among the more unusual, but that actually he had a call earlier in the day from a lady who had a bat in her attic! He was able to capture it with the very same net-on-a-pole approach that he used to coax the squirrel away. He told us that he kept the bat in the net and drove it out of town to a safer location! All’s well that ends well and no harm was done to the animal or humans! *This is a completely true story!
I’m just an ordinary human
But I don’t feel so ordinary today
I’m just a picture perfect nothing
Sometimes I medicate
I’ll be a picture perfect human
Before the sun goes down today
I trapsed many a foot path to find this flycatcher. I thought...So I shouldered 17 lbs of gear all morning locating a bird that weighs a handful of ounces? I must be medicated!!... Well, I know I'm in good company - as many of you experience similar unrestraint of mind. What we wouldn't do to write a tasty fowl image to our CF/SD cards!! Happy Shooting All!
A critique about self-medication, it was in my idea notebook long time ago but I took the photo today because my lack of ideas...
...both the cat and the picture.
Chauncey was one of the first cats I photographed - way back at the beginning of June - for our FB page at work. He was boarding with us and at the time he was almost a nonentity. He was neither extremely mean nor friendly so no one had strong feelings about him one way or the other. He ate well and had formed stool so he wasn't a worry that we had to monitor closely. He's 14 and so was neither a young cat who wanted to get out of his cage and play nor was he a geriatric cat who needed to be medicated and needed lots of encouragement to eat and to move around. He was pretty much invisible.
He's been back to board with us for a couple days each month since then so I've gotten to know him and he's now one of my favorite cats in the entire practice. He's very cute even though he's not a stand out. He loves attention but doesn't seek it. He loves to get out of his cage and explore and will even follow me around but never asks to be let out. I now take pictures of him almost daily when he's with us and send them to his owners, who it turns out, are completely besotted with him and miss him terribly when they're away.
So in the end, he is cherished at home and adored when he comes to board with us.
I may not be on Flickr much over the weekend because I still have 92% of Tess of the D'Urbervilles to read for book group before Monday evening!
I always fail to see the little things in front of me,
The things that mean so much to you,
A way to let you know
That I appreciate the way you always tolerate,
But sometimes when I medicate,
Frustration in you shows me how you feel.
Staind - "Devil"

Most of what she said did not make logical sense.
She did not present a harm to self or others.
We did monitor people like her
and assess any decompensation .
Most folks who represented a danger to self or others or were literally unable to care for themselves were taken to Bellevue with NYPD assistance and medicated.
All were usually discharged that same day or admitted for 2-3 days and then let go back into the streets.

I don’t talk a lot about Dominic here on my blog anymore but this post is going to be all about him today (and he has given me his permission to share this post). For those that are new to my blog, Dominic is our youngest. He’s now 13 years old and in the 8th grade.
When he was born, Anna was three years old and she had global developmental delays. We did not yet know about her intellectual disability or autism, or that she would develop epilepsy within the first few months of her brother’s life. The next few years became even more intense and life revolved around Anna’s therapies, interventions, and specialists. I just lugged Dominic along with us to all of her appointments. I think because her issues were so complex, I didn’t want to acknowledge that he had his own challenges. Dominic’s elementary and preschool teachers all gently suggested that he might have ADHD. I poo-pooed them… he was just being a boy… he was meeting milestones… he was fine. It all came to a head in 2nd grade, when Dominic was in the office weekly for behavioral challenges, and then he got suspended. We took him to see his first psychiatrist and got him tested. He did indeed have ADHD, and to our surprise, he was also depressed. We made the difficult decision to medicate him.
Here’s the thing about neurological and psychiatric drugs… it’s all trial and error to see what works and what doesn’t. It’s a scary proposition, poking medications down your young child’s throat, not knowing if the side effects will make things worse, praying for a dramatic change in behavior. But Dominic was not functional in school and was starting to alienate his peers. He was so unhappy and even worse, he felt like his negative behaviors were his fault. After months of experimentation with various medications, we learned that he could not tolerate stimulants and found a decent balance with Strattera and Intuniv. He improved. Fast forward a few years, we added an anti-depressant to help him with the worsening depression and a mood stabilizer to help with his anger. In middle school, Dominic’s struggle with depression and impulse control got worse. We changed psychiatrists because of the move from Austin to New Braunfels, and the new doctor recommended trying a stimulant again… a mild extended-release liquid called Quillivant XR. It made a night and day difference for Dominic. We saw him smile again, he made real friends, his grades improved, and his visits to the principal’s office became non-existent. We were able to discontinue two of his other medications because the Quillivant worked so well for him.
Last year, Curtis’s division was sold to a new company, so at the beginning of this year, we had brand new insurance for the first time in six years. Much to our surprise, we discovered that all of our prescriptions went toward our $5K deductible in addition to medical visits. We also discovered that Dominic’s Quillivant was not covered at all and that Quillivant was on back order through the manufacturer and was difficult to find. (On a side note, several other medications for myself and Anna are not covered at all; one of my medications was $342/month so I stopped taking it. One of Anna’s is $169/month. Ouch. Most of our regular prescriptions allow one fill at our regular pharmacy and the refills must be through their mail order pharmacy or they won’t be covered… this was shock number two when we started getting refills in February.) I spent hours on the phone over the last six weeks with different prescription benefits representatives, with various pharmacies, and with the doctor’s office. First we had to find the Quillivant, then we could figure out how to get it covered (which will involve a letter of medical necessity from the psychiatrist to the medical review board for the prescription benefits company). I managed to find the Quillivant for January from a different pharmacy for $270, but for February, I couldn’t find it anywhere within a 100-mile radius. The manufacturer doesn’t have any update as to when it will be back in stock. After talking with the psychiatrist, he recommended that we try Dominic on Concerta… basically the same base medication as Quillivant but in pill form. Since he was a few days away from running out of Quillivant, I had to drive to San Antonio to pick up this new prescription for Concerta and get it filled. He started on it last weekend when I was in the hospital.
Last week was an awful week for our son. He was grumpier than usual, sometimes he was downright oppositional. Tuesday evening, he reacted badly to a joke and shut down on us. Wednesday morning, Dominic and Curtis got into an argument as Dominic was leaving for school and Dominic came back into the house and said he wasn’t going. After being firm with him, Curtis got him to make it outside just in time to catch the bus to school, but we were all near tears and very upset. Later in the day, the girl that Dominic asked to the school dance canceled and he got very angry. When he got home from school, he went directly to his room and shut the door. He didn’t want to talk about it. Thursday he woke up with tummy issues and stayed home. Friday, he went to school but forgot his headphones, so I had to chase down the bus because he couldn’t stand to listen to country music on the way to school. Two hours later, he texted me saying that he was in his behavioral specialist’s room. He said that he was angry with the kids for talking during announcements and he yelled at the entire class before storming out. I made the connection to the Concerta and said maybe it was this new medication that was making him grumpy. He agreed saying that he’d been feeling irritated and violent since being on it. “I am angry at everyone for everything, even if it doesn’t make any sense.” Curtis went to pick up Dominic from school… there was no way he was going to be functional so he brought his school work home.
I left a message for his psychiatrist to see what other options we had and again began calling pharmacies to see if anyone had the Quillivant in stock. I still had his Quillivant paper prescription from late January and after the fourth call to various pharmacies in San Antonio, I found one that had Quillivant. However, the prescription was 28 days old and they would only honor it for 21 days. So I had to get a new paper prescription from the psychiatrist first. I called again to the psychiatrist and left another message, then praying that he was in the office, took off in the car to head to his office. Luckily, he was seeing patients that afternoon and I had to wait about 40 minutes to get a new prescription. (I still haven’t received a call back.) Then I headed to a tiny Target in central San Antonio that was supposed to have the Quillivant. There was a moment of panic when I thought I was at the wrong store, but they did have it. The packaging was smaller, so I had to get two bottles… the cost? $580. I almost cried. I was still recovering from the kidney infection and had been driving around all day. The pharmacy staff worked with me to look for coupons and discount codes to no avail. Nearly two hours later, I walked out with Dominic’s Quillivant and $580 charged on our emergency credit card. I didn’t get home until 6:30 that evening.
I don’t know how families with two working parents can find the time to manage issues like this… endless phone calls and appointments and driving… and how can anyone afford these kind of prices? Curtis and I have talked a lot about the difficult choices we have to make to help our children. There has been a lot of talk in the media lately about mental health and medications with regard to school shootings. I could see how this change in medication made Dominic so angry. We do not have typical kids so many parents do not understand how hard it is to decide to medicate. What would happen if they didn’t have these medications at all? Why do our kids even need these drugs in the first place? Why are there so many more kids diagnosed with psychiatric disorders and on the autism spectrum? Is this strictly an American issue? The dollar cost becomes irrelevant. We do not know how these medications work, we do not know what effect these medications have long-term, and we have to experiment using a trial and error process in order to find the right combination of medications to help our children function (it was a similar process to help Anna manage her epilepsy). We will do whatever it takes to help them.
So my photo today represents the expensive experiment to which we are subjecting our children. This tiny pill, Concerta, at 3/8″ long, caused our son to become angry and violent. Because of a pharmaceutical manufacturer’s lack of medication availability, and the change in our insurance, we had modify what was working for Dominic. We are good parents. We are involved. We set limits and boundaries. We have a team of medical and educational professionals helping us help them. We just want what every other parent wants for their own kids… for our kids to be happy. At the end of the day, that’s all we want… a chance for them to be happy. But at what expense?

I'll never forget around ten years ago arriving home from the store one rainy evening to encounter a fluffy softball sized Eddie floundering in the street. He was soaking wet, muddy, cold, and lonely with health issues galore. Not meaning to brag, but Tommy just met his guardian angel. I am guessing he might have been perhaps one month old, with upper respiratory infection and eyes matted shut, with fur falling out too. Well anyway I medicated little Eddie to a healthy little bundle of catnip loving joy. Had to wake up in the middle of the night to bottle feed this little guy some kitten formula for around six straight weeks. At the point when little Eddie began to bite through the rubber nipples, I switched to more solid kitten food.....When things were going badly throughout the years, Eddie would shower me with affection to remind me that there's always hope! As if to tell me, "Look how hopeless things were for me, before my guardian angel arrived to my rescue, dude!"
Here we have a very wise blue jay. He uses the blues. Word up to one and all: God is not a jerk. Negative emotions aren't just for suffering or medicating. They're useful tools. And I wish I had a nickel for every time I've shared that truth. I'd be wealthy enough to share it with the world.
I hate doctors, I told them at the surgery that the soles of my feet were burning at night pressing against the warm sheets and so they called me in for an inspection and a blood-test. Now they've discoved my serotonin levels are almost twice what they should be. If you don't know what it does it controls our moods and makes us happy. Well I knew something keeps me always cheerful and a lot of the time sexy so I'm hoping they don't try to medicate me and make me behave like someone should at my age. I'm recovering slowly but nicely from my injury and now I just want to be left alone to enjoy life especially now summer is coming...
Despite numerous medicated baths, Darla's skin is still driving her crazy with itchiness (you can see the inside of her right ear is a bit pink) So we'll be seeing the vet again this week. I know skin conditions can be really hard to diagnosis, but I hope they can figure something out to give her some relief.
Yuba's nightly portrait for 15 January 2021. He's in the kitchen after having eaten his nightly snack (I'll have to post a picture of them provided my memory works long enough for me to do so). His expression indicates he thought his snack wasn't enough... He is always welcome to eat the medicated food we get from the vet to help him reduce weight...
