Image of Coney Island’s world famous boardwalk eastward towards Deno Wonder Wheel amusement park and now defunct Astroland much of which has reopened as Luna Park taken in 2007 whilst I attended an AVP Beach Volley tournament with my oldest daughter (who played volleyball in high school, was a member of a NJ state championship squad and just loved beach volleyball). Prominent in this image was the famous 230 foot Astrotower, which was built in 1964 by Astroland owners the Albert family defying the trend of totally wiping out all the amusement parks in Coney Island which was the pervasive view in the late 1950’s-early 1960’s by many who wanted to build ocean side apartments and edifices. It provided an amazing ariel perspective view of Coney Island that was still in operation when I was there in 2007. When it opened it could be seen from 37 miles away the newspapers claimed I was a bit surprised and disappointed when a decade later I returned and found out the Astrotower had been taken down in 2013. Many hoped it would be rescued like the Parachute Jump Tower or the Flushing Park’s World’s Fair Towers, but alas Superstorm Sandy put the final nail in the coffin in 2012 and down it came in dramatic fashion the Fourth of July weekend in 2013. Condemned and cut into pieces. Today Luna Park has a smaller tower, a 137 foot Astro Tower that is bedazzled with lights who pay homage to former with its name. This is not the window of a cathedral, it is simply a mustard jar illuminated by four candles of the advent wreath.

Das ist nicht das Fenster einer Kathedrale, sondern nur ein Senfglas, das von den vier Kerzen des Adventskranzes beleuchtet wird.
