92 St. George’s Crescent, McDermott’s Castle, begun about 1862 in an attempt to replicate the owner’s Irish castle, sat empty until 1904. A new owner added the third floor and finished the roof and tower which contained an elevator run by
water from a cistern on its roof. A local tale claims the elevator could go up but not down but doesn’t explain why or how such an elevator would be of any use.
McDermott's Castle was built by the Mac Diarmada dynasty in the 11th century who were the rulers of Magh Lurig in northwestern Ireland. They chose the island, now known as Castle Island, in Lough Key as it was a great strategic location. The McDermotts would eventually lose control of the island in 1586, and since then the castle fell into ruin. An architect named John Nash would try to redevelop it into a summer home, but the castle is still in ruins today.
I decided to build in micro-scale again as I thought it would be a fun challenge. I specifically wanted to try building a castle on an island and came across McDermotts Castle. I might return to micro-scale in the future outside of the medieval era.
My entry to the CCCs "micro castle" category and Brickscalibur's "medieval micro" category.
D&McD sells electrical parts, so it's sort of ironic that their neon sign doesn't work. Looks like a truck hit it, as it hangs very close to the edge of the street. Shame.
