I upgraded the memory of my computer from the 7GB (2+2+2+1) to the maximum that the four slots on my old motherboard (Asus M4A89GTD from 2010, 15 years ago) will take (4x4): 16GB and now Firefox is using a more reasonable about 1.2 GB for 14 tabs (including X and Gmail) when it used 2 to 3 times that when I had half the memory.
Maybe it has a speed requirement such that if it is not up to speed it spawns more and more processes and uses more and more memory until it achieves the speed it thinks is normal/reasonable for a modern browser, meaning that old PCs with less memory get all their RAM used up?
Google chrome on the other hand users more memory now that I have more memory in my PC, which is quite reasonable -- the more resources available, the more they should be used. Firefox took the opposite path and used more memory the less was available. Perhaps the developers don't have 7GB memory PCs in their sights. My wife's PC with 12GB is running smoothly using Firefox too. Her PC can upgrade to 32GB.
Firefox's memory usage is however gradually increasing.
