Yesterday, I photographed Louise, a female athlete from Stuttgart. On a regular basis, she practices road cycling, kayaking and running - many great sports that can be done outside.

Instead of photographing her on a road bike again, we came up with the idea of kayak photographs, as there are not many pictures of it, at least we could not find many professional photographs on the web. So we met at her boats club during one of the warmest days of November, to catch some last golden sun rays and autumnal leaves on the trees.

As the year is coming to an end, I am evaluating my photography style and reedited some of my photos I created over the last years for the Das Edelweiss Salzburg Mountain Resort in Grossarl, Austria. In this edit, I decided for some darker and less vibrant tones.

Text

Barcelona Pavilion

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, 1929

It is a prime example of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's "flowing spaces" and is one of the most famous buildings of the Bauhaus architect: the "German Pavilion" for the 1929 World Exhibition in Barcelona.

Text

Mies van der Rohe designed the pavilion on behalf of the German Reich government in collaboration with Lilly Reich, who had been given overall artistic direction of the German Building Department. Mies fulfilled the vaguely formulated building task by building a flat representative building with a "free floor plan" - i.e. spatial zones that flow into one another - on a specially selected plot of land. The use of the finest materials such as onyx doré, green marble and travertine combined with large glass fronts "floating" in a steel skeleton construction gave the pavilion transparency and spaciousness. The furniture designed especially for the building was probably created in close consultation with Lilly Reich, who probably also advised Mies on the color concept and the choice of materials.

The complex, which included a service building, a small courtyard and two water basins, radiated calm and grandeur. The lack of national pathos contributed significantly to the positive effect of the pavilion and increased the building's acceptance among visitors and hosts of the World Expo. Even decades after its demolition, the importance of the ephemeral building was undisputed, which is why it was reconstructed by Spanish architects from 1983 to 1986.
