After looking at schematics and the pin out for the Max7219 IC I worked out part of my problem. The pin labelled “CS” (Chip Select or Chip Enable on SPI interfaces) is really a “Load” pin. Maybe there’s a reason for this labelling but it’s unclear to me.
The flash tends to wash the LEDs out so again I’ve faked them a little.

My "new" 03 Matrix XRS.
I didn't set out to buy another Matrix, but I wanted another small wagon, and that left a short list of cars to consider - Focus, PT Cruiser, HHR, Legacy/Outback, Matrix.
My old Matrix was the base model. This XRS is the top trim line, with power toys, a nifty in-dash AC plug, and a more powerful engine. It's still basically an economy car, though.
All things considered, I would rather not have wrecked my old Matrix. I didn't need the hassle or extra expense of buying a new car right now!

For Take a class with Dave & Dave, week 10 assignment #2:
This one is a homage to the scene in Matrix 1 where Trinity scans open ports of a machine with nmap and then uses a SSHv1exploit to hack this computer. In the movie Trinity sets the password to "Z1ON0101". I used a different one here...
Here is a collection of screenshots from that scene in the movie: images.insecure.org/nmap/images/matrix/
And now I can finally stop wearing sunglasses in my dark apartment. :-)
I made this matrix a while ago. I had all these slides of old paintings put onto a Kodak Photo Cd (anybody remember these?) and the quality was not good for big prints but I ended up putting a bunch togeather and then playing with color and tone to get each frame to resonate with its neighbor. Kind of a puzzle really. In the end I got this. A lot of people have bought this print for their bedroom. hmmmmmm.
Can't think of a better compliment actually.
I've uploaded a fairlly large version so you can see details
Agent Smith, having upgraded his OS to version 4.1, enlists the help of Virtual Barney 2.3 to defeat Neo.
From Seattle Auto Show, where an actual car was not available. Opens to front shot of the car. These were built in Canada and only for North America, I believe.
My first Matrix creation. I know it's been done and done well, but I wanted to make one that would be relatively easy to reproduce without rare parts.

Tzolkin (or tzolk'in, in the revised orthography which is now preferred) is the name bestowed by Mayanist scholars upon the version of the 260-day Mesoamerican calendar which was used by the Maya civilization.
The tzolk'in is the most fundamental and widely-attested of all the Maya calendars, and was a pre-eminent component in the society and rituals of the ancient Maya. The tzolk'in calendar remains in use amongst several Maya communities in the Guatemalan highlands.
The word was coined based on the Yucatec language, with an intended meaning of "count of days". The actual names of this calendar as used by the pre-Columbian Maya are not known. The Aztec calendar equivalent was called by them tonalpohualli, in the Nahuatl language.
Called "Tzolkin" by the ancient Yucatec Maya, the matrix of 260 energies is also known in modern terms as the "Harmonic Module." It can be understood as a keyboard of 260 unique energies, or vibrations, each energy composed of one of the 13 Tones of Creation, and one of the 20 Solar Seals. (13 X 20 = 260). While this module is infinitely more than a calendric tool, we are empowered by this multi-faceted Module to live in the Synchronic Order of The Law of Time by using it as a day-to-day count of energies which harmoniously overlays upon the simple foundation of the 13-moon yearly calendar.
This form of the Tzolkin as the "Harmonic Module," (shown on the computer screen), inclusive of the 52 shaded squares which form what is called the "Loom of the Maya," is based on Dr. Jose Arguelles' presentation in The Mayan Factor, and is distinct from the form of the Tzolkin as taught and followed by the Quiche Maya. For instance, the 52-unit loom is a bi-lateral symmetry pattern which reflects the basic pattern of our DNA double helix, and was passed down from a secret lineage of Yucatec Mayan shamans, received and revealed by the works of Dr. Jose Arguelles. Integrating the galactic code of light into the genetic code of life, this "portal" formation is a resonant structure linked to the activation of our full DNA potential. Find out when these galactic activation portal days occur, and receive indepth descriptions of the 13 Tones of Creation and the 20 Solar Seals by utilizing the 13-Moon Natural Time Calendar.

Keanu Reeves, shown here at the low point of the Matrix trilogy (Matrix Revolutions).
If the symbolism involving kung-fu fighting bits of software wasn't enough, Keanu's character Neo sacrifices himself to save (what's left of) humanity whilst playing a really immersive beat 'em up* computer game.
*note how joysticks are not used so as to free "Breeze" Reeves' hands for extra authentic posing.
