The cathedral, originally the matrice until Gozo became a separate diocese in 1864, is built on the site of three or more older places of worship, including Roman and Phoenician temples. Construction commenced in 1697, four years after the 1693 earthquake had damaged its predecessor and destroyed large tracts of southeast Sicily. (The cathedral at Mdina was another victim of the earthquake, and Lorenzo Gafa was commissioned to design replacements for both.) By the end of the 17th century Maltese Baroque had become more sophisticated, the simple swaggering effect having more impact than mere ornamentation. Here, the rectangular façade with its gown of stairs coming down from the Corinthian pillars lends height, and the escutcheon is that of Grand Master Perrellos in whose reign it was built. From the outside the façade gives the impression of a gloomy nave, but inside it is surprisingly pilasters on the ornate tessellated floor of tombstones. The single most interesting feature is a pure example of Gozitan ingenuity: due to lack of funds a dome was not added to the structure, so the Sicilian Antonio Manuele was commissioned in 1739 to paint a meticulous trompe l0eil in its stead. The clever perspective is at first too difficult to grasp – watch out for others walking around in dizzying circles craning their necks. From a distance, the domeless cathedral oddly fits in with the decapitated Gozitan hills. It is ironic that poor Gafa did not have the funds at his disposal to add his signature, a dome, in this, the last work of his life.
The irregular Cathedral Square, guarded by two toy-sized 17th-century cannons, once housed dwellings on the now vacant south and west walls.

The Old Cathedral: Matrice Vecchia ---originally built in the 14th century on the remains of a pagan temple and some interesting works of religious art were discovered while reconstructing the ceiling recently. It has a Renaissance portico, a splendid Baroque portal, and an octagonal spire covered with majoilica tiles. The interior of the church was enlarged at the end of the 15th century with a most notabe polyptych above the main altar depicting the Coronation of the Virgin (attributed to Pietro Ruzzolone, or possibly Antonello de Saliba) - in which a saint is depicted wearing spectacles.

still need to inventory this lot as well.
the seller has catagorized them by slide number in bags, "1000's"; 2000's; etc. and provided a list of what's there.
trouble is, Linotype did not issue like slides in sequence. e.g. all plain rules numbered 1 - 100, all dotted rule, 101 - 200, etc. etc.
so, each bag is a mish-mash of styles.
basically, just need to dive in, cast each one, proof them and see what we have here.

I dug out my LED Matrices and was pleasantly surprised that I'd designed these custom carrier boards and had some sample code on my laptop that actually worked.
This is in support of Dao's latest project, and she's currently working on the other half (a dress sewn from scratch, and a custom matrix of LEDs connected with conductive fabric tape and thread).
We're both glad the arduino controller bit is taken care of.
FYI, these carrier boards would be even better if I hadn't messed up some pins so the matrix rows go 8, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. Ah, it can always be fixed in the code, and was!

The funeral monument of Berardo d'Aquino is located inside the Benedictine abbey of Santa Maria della Strada built in 1148 on a hill adjacent to the village of Matrice, near Campobasso in Molise, on the Cortile-Centocelle sheep track which from Matrice continued towards Puglia . The monument, datable to the second half of the fourteenth century, represents the highest artistic testimony of the late medieval phase of the church and is an expression of a mature Gothic style that makes use of stylistic formulas and particularly rich ornamental solutions.

smothering and sowing,
- an invoking."

Comment: "To me this exhibition is about matrices i.e. the environments or materials within which something develops, is cast or shaped. Here, there is everywhere evidence, of the Great Goddess, a medium between nature and humanity, guiding not the shaping of matter, but its resurrection. And these matrices, these 'situations', are especially embedded in Nancy Holt's multiplicity of images, in Cathy Haynes' forest of words and months, in Hannah Lees' tablets and altarpiece, in Zoë Paul's staging and Claire Potter's script. Subtle and fabulous. " - JayZee
