The cathedral, originally the matrice until Gozo became a separate diocese in 1864, is built on the site of three or more older places of worship, including Roman and Phoenician temples. Construction commenced in 1697, four years after the 1693 earthquake had damaged its predecessor and destroyed large tracts of southeast Sicily. (The cathedral at Mdina was another victim of the earthquake, and Lorenzo Gafa was commissioned to design replacements for both.) By the end of the 17th century Maltese Baroque had become more sophisticated, the simple swaggering effect having more impact than mere ornamentation. Here, the rectangular façade with its gown of stairs coming down from the Corinthian pillars lends height, and the escutcheon is that of Grand Master Perrellos in whose reign it was built. From the outside the façade gives the impression of a gloomy nave, but inside it is surprisingly pilasters on the ornate tessellated floor of tombstones. The single most interesting feature is a pure example of Gozitan ingenuity: due to lack of funds a dome was not added to the structure, so the Sicilian Antonio Manuele was commissioned in 1739 to paint a meticulous trompe l0eil in its stead. The clever perspective is at first too difficult to grasp – watch out for others walking around in dizzying circles craning their necks. From a distance, the domeless cathedral oddly fits in with the decapitated Gozitan hills. It is ironic that poor Gafa did not have the funds at his disposal to add his signature, a dome, in this, the last work of his life.
The irregular Cathedral Square, guarded by two toy-sized 17th-century cannons, once housed dwellings on the now vacant south and west walls.

Milling the English bridge as shown does not reduce the strength of this casting, it is well over-designed.
Below is the previous foundry holder design (mentioned in the video). Both designs work well; the holder in the video below is especially useful if one does not want to permanently modify the English bridge.

ATF matrices for 24 pt Bulmer, punctuation from 24 pt Litho Roman, originated at Inland Type Foundry, cast by ATF. Mat on its side is the cap A showing the holes drilled in the mat for alignment on the Barth caster. The 18 1/2 on the cap M indicates that the set width of the chararcter is 18 and 1/2 points, and the 24 is the point size of the type. The lowercase h has a flash coating of chrome on it, otherwise it is the same as the other brass matrices. The Bulmer matrices were engraved in the 1927-28 time period.

The church of Matrice Vecchia was built in the 15th century on the ruins of a pagan temple. It has a Renaissance portico added in the 16th century, and a central portal in the Catalan-Gothic style. On the left side is a bell-tower with a Romanesque mullioned window culminating in an octagonal spire covered with majolica tiles. The interior of the church, originally divided into a nave and two aisles, received another aisle at the end of the 16th century. It preserves prized works, most remarkably, above the main altar, a splendid polyptych depicting The Coronation of the Virgin , attributed to Pietro Ruzzolone or possibly Antonello de Saliba. On the bottom right is the unusual figure of a Saint wearing spectacles. On the right is a statue of the Madonna delle Grazie by Antonello Gagini. Below the nave is a fresco depicting the Betrothal of the Virgins showing a strong Senese influence in the elegant features and the symmetry of the composition. Some of the columns separating the nave and the aisles are painted with frescoes, including the figure of St. Catherine of Alexandria.
