This is one step in the process of replacing the rotting timber with all new beams and posts. This was an all-day project on November 17, 2012, which extended a few more hours into the next day. This was a successful Day of Service at Rubel Castle with plenty of willing volunteers.
The Petreon Outdoor Sculpture Museum, located in Mazotos, Republic of Cyprus, is a remarkable testament to the rich history and cultural heritage of the region. Established in 2003, this unique museum has become a popular destination for art enthusiasts and tourists alike. With its stunning collection of outdoor sculptures, the Petreon Museum offers a captivating journey through time, showcasing the evolution of art in Cyprus.
The museum takes its name from the Greek word "Petreon," meaning stone or rock, which reflects the predominant material used in the sculptures displayed here. Mazotos, a small village situated on the southern coast of Cyprus, was chosen as the site for the museum due to its strategic location and proximity to significant archaeological sites.
The Petreon Outdoor Sculpture Museum was founded by a group of local artists and art enthusiasts who aimed to create a space where contemporary sculpture could be showcased alongside the island's historical treasures. The museum's vision was to celebrate the unique artistic legacy of Cyprus and promote the exchange of ideas among local and international artists.
The collection at the Petreon Museum spans various periods and styles, providing visitors with a comprehensive overview of Cypriot sculpture throughout history. The earliest sculptures date back to the prehistoric era, showcasing the ancient island's fascination with human and animal forms. These primitive sculptures, carved from limestone and other local stones, depict fertility goddesses, animals, and mythical creatures, reflecting the spiritual beliefs and cultural practices of early Cypriots.
As one explores further into the museum, the sculptures transition into the Hellenistic and Roman periods, showcasing the influence of Greek and Roman civilizations on the island. These artworks illustrate the classical techniques and themes that defined this era, with statues of gods, heroes, and mythological scenes. Marble, a preferred material during this time, was used to create intricate details and lifelike features in the sculptures.
Moving into the Byzantine and Medieval periods, the museum presents a range of religious sculptures, including iconostases, crucifixes, and saintly figures. These works demonstrate the influence of Christianity on Cypriot art, capturing the Byzantine artistic style characterized by elongated proportions, intricate details, and religious symbolism.
The Petreon Museum also houses a substantial collection of modern and contemporary sculptures, showcasing the evolution of artistic expression in Cyprus. These artworks represent various artistic movements, including Cubism, Surrealism, and Abstract Expressionism, and reflect the influence of international trends on local artists.
In addition to its permanent collection, the Petreon Museum hosts temporary exhibitions and installations, providing a platform for emerging artists and fostering cultural exchange. The museum regularly organizes workshops, artist talks, and educational programs, aiming to engage visitors of all ages and backgrounds in the appreciation and understanding of sculpture.
Over the years, the Petreon Outdoor Sculpture Museum has garnered international recognition as a cultural landmark and a hub for artistic creativity. Its idyllic coastal setting and well-maintained grounds offer visitors a tranquil and immersive experience, allowing them to appreciate the sculptures in harmony with nature.
In conclusion, the Petreon Outdoor Sculpture Museum in Mazotos, Republic of Cyprus, stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of Cypriot sculpture. Through its diverse collection, spanning thousands of years, the museum showcases the artistic evolution of the island, offering visitors a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of Cyprus. With its commitment to promoting contemporary sculpture and fostering cultural exchange, the Petreon Museum continues to be a vibrant center for artistic expression and appreciation.
An 18 wheel big rig carrying a full load of premium chicken feed has been involved in a scary rollover situation in Dodge City this morning.
Just west of the Highway 69 and County Road 233 intersection in Dodge City, a fully loaded 18 wheel grain storage truck departed the southbound lane of the roadway around 6 am this morning. Entering the rain saturated drain ditches along the boundary of the road, the big rig became unstable, rolling over while it aggressively entered the perimeter of the pine forest along Highway 69.
The large vehicle eventually came to rest on it’s side. It is embedded in a water filled, muddy drainage ditch fully entangle in downed pine trees.
The driver of the 18 wheeler sustained minor injuries in the crash (lacerations to the forehead and wrist). Amazingly and thankfully, he walked away from the cab under his own power. He did not require assessment and treatment other than that provided by Cullman Emergency Medical Services (CEMS) at the scene.
With this crash came two environmental concerns – one minor, one major.
The first centered around the ejection of significant amounts of premium chicken feed onto the roadway and shoulder. The second, and more concerning, was the leaking of diesel fuel from the truck’s tanks. Cullman Emergency Management Agency (CEMA) and the Cullman County Hazardous Materials Team (CCHMT) were called to the scene.

New interpretation material from 20/20 at Coletton Fishacre.
Coleton Fishacre was built as a country home for Rupert D'Oyly Carte and his wife, Lady Dorothy Carte, between 1925 and 1926. The architect was Oswald Milne, a former assistant to Edwin Lutyens, who designed the house with the principles of the Arts and Crafts movement in mind: simplicity of design and quality of craftsmanship. The influence of this older movement notwithstanding, the house is influenced by its own time, especially in its Art Deco interior. The structure is built of local slate rubble with a Delabole slate roof.

I asked for a model & my co-worker came thru for me. Although he was unsure of posing & whether to smile or not to smile, he made my job easy by going along with my vision.
I got lucky yesterday. My boyfriend found this "ring" and gave it to me. All I had to do was take a picture :-)

Taken at Wollaton Hall, April 2015.
Wollaton Hall has a collection of managed deer within their parkland. Although I've seen other peoples photos of jackdaws collecting fur from deer, to this point I'd never witnessed it. I was pleased on this occasion, to not only see them, but to photograph it as well, and not one but two of them, They made several trips, so presumably had a very cosy nest as a result.
