Title: Clare Gass fonds : P185. Ephemeral material
Creator: Gass, Clare, 1887-1968, author
Publisher:
Sponsor:
Contributor: McGill University Library
Date: 1915
Language: eng
Description: 7.8 cm textual records (1 volume).
This fonds is held at the Osler Library, McGill University
The fonds consists principally of a diary that recounts Gass's experiences as a nurse with the Canadian Army Medical Corps in France and England from 4 March 1915 to 31 December 1916. Her diary contains an early appearance of the poem "In Flanders Field," written by John McCrae during the war upon the burial of a close friend. It is copied out in the diary entry for 30 October, nearly six weeks before its first publication in the magazine Punch on 8 December 1915. Included also in the fonds are ephemeral material originally laid in the pages of the diary, including newspaper clippings, manuscript notes and letters, one photograph, pencil drawings, and ten dried plant specimens
Clare Gass was born in Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia, on 18 March 1887. She was the only daughter of Robert Gass and his wife, Nerissa Miller. As an adolescent, she attended the Church School for Girls, a private Anglican school in Windsor, Nova Scotia (later the Edgehill School). Three years after her graduation in 1905, she left home for Montreal to train as a nurse at the Montreal General Hospital School of Nursing from 1909 to 1912, afterwards taking up private nursing practice for three years. After a brief training period in Quebe, she left for Europe in May of 1915 as a Lieutenant nursing sister with the Canadian Army Medical Corps, No. 3 Canadian General Hospital (McGill). From 1915-1918, she was posted mainly in France, with some time spent stationed in Cliveden, England, and Rhyl, Wales, and served in multiple hospitals. She spent the year after the war on transport duty, tending to wounded soldiers returning home. She was demobilized in 1919 and returned to Montreal, where she left nursing to pursue social work. She worked in the Social Service Department of the Montreal General Hospital for 28 years before returning to her hometown. Gass died at the age of 81 at the Camp Hill Veterans' Hospital in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on 5 August 1968

Materials used in my tourism English (観光英語) class. Soon to be available at tekisuto.com (please cite).
The Japanese are generally so positive that there are few swear words, and avoidance of negative subjects like those dealt with here. At the same time, scholars of tourism point out that dark tourism, to sites related to negative things, are big business and may also have positive (and negative) ethical outcomes. While there are haunted spots, and Hiroshima and Nagasaki are two of the biggest tourist destinations in Japan, few of my students would think of showing a foreign tourist to a dark tourism spot, perhaps for the same reason that Americans tend not to be self critical. Additionally the word Tourism in Japanese (kankou) originates in the practice of showing the highlights of ones region - kankou means literally "see or show the lights".
But when there is money to be made they may be prepared to go dark, and Japan could become a dark tourism Mecca. There are so many sites that are completely un-tapped.

Jaz (Franco Fasoli) began his career as a graffiti writer working the streets of Buenos Aires in the mid 1990's. After moving away from letter based graffiti, he began experimenting with techniques and scale in Argentine culture-inspired figurative pieces. By blending materials like asphaltic paint and petrol, Jaz was able to paint large murals that had the look of delicate watercolor paintings. Recently, his focus has been on abstract representations of football hooliganism with Mexcian "lucha libre" style wrestlers in animal masks and part-man/part-beast figures grappling in combat.

An old wall section at Echo Dale Farm/Park west of Medicine Hat.
A perfect illustration of how many of Medicine Hat's homes and businesses were constructed before the advent of the cinder block. Hollow clay tile provides most of the structural integrity while the more expensive red brick is used as facing.
Promotional materials for a production of Shakespeare's comedy, "Twelfth Night". I twisted the classic image of Clarke Kent transforming into Superman into Viola revealing her sex after disguising herself as a man. The bright comic book colors and shapes also work well with the topsy-turvey feel of the play.

" I live in Cha Kwo Ling. I am getting older. I love being here. I have a lot
of friends, my neighbours look after me, we have shops and restaurants. My parents were born here so I came back to our home. It is very safe here, our doors are always open. Long time ago, we had fishermen, people working in the stone quarry, and later in the oil industry on the docks. All of this is gone now. We have a recycling centre, waste materials everywhere, trucks come and go all day long, it is a good business but some people are complaining about the noise and the dirt ; I don’t mind. I take the minibus everyday in and out. When there is heavy rain, some roofs are leaking. We have mosquitoes, rats running around at night, sometimes even snakes, but we are used to it. We love it here. I don’t have much hope for Cha Kwo ling, I live day by day, trying to live a happy life. We are proud of our beautiful temple and festivals that attract people from all around."

== Brief ==
SUGAR is delicious. And Hong Kong exemplifies our global society’s addiction to the sweet life. Life in Hong Kong is fast-paced, convenient, delicious and glittery. In Hong Kong, you will find people shopping in both luxury goods stores and fast fashion giants, dining in Michelin-starred restaurants, traveling via one of the best public transportation systems in the world and living in beautiful homes in the sky.
As with the gaping cavities that result from over-consumption of sugar, Hong Kong also suffers negative consequences of its sugar addiction. The pursuit of the good life has led society to wilfully turn a blind eye to the cost and consequence of its consumption. Hong Kong is paying the toll of its addiction. Overflowing landfills, polluted air and waterways, hungry children and homeless seniors are the untold parts of Hong Kong’s story. The city that hosts the highest density of millionaires is also the home of caged home dwellers.
The concentration of wealth and power have reached such extent that the whole city landscape manifests how decisions are taken: top down. Big scale investments shape the urban life. The way of financing, the use of resources and targeted clientele for the majority of projects are decided based on the expected revenue. The lack of responsible involvement and intervention is not only an emerging factor in architectural profession. Hong Kong young generation see themselves with little perspective due to unaffordable property prices and question the inequality in the city's population. The aesthetic of the city is for most “business-friendly”, which really is sterile, technocentric, vacant of any form of spontaneity and life.
How can city dwellers move away from pure consumption and reclaim an active advocacy? How can the future population of Hong Kong deal more responsibly with the offer of sugar? Can life come back in the constructed environment? How can we break away from sugar addiction and build together a sustainable city?
Cesar Jung-Harada and Susanne Trumpf, with the support of Georg Hoehne.
On the 6th April 2018 I went on a visit to Southsea and Portsmouth to first visit the newly refurbished D day museum. Southsea is a seaside resort located next to Portsmouth at the southern end of Portsea Island, it is in the county of Hampshire. It developed as a fashionable Victorian seaside resort in the 19th. century, originally it was named named Croxton Town. The name Southsea originates from Southsea Castle; a fortified castle located on the seafront and constructed in 1544 to help defend the Solent and the important approaches to Portsmouth Harbour. Palmerston road is the main High Street of Southsea. Albert Road is a distinct street containing shopping and other cultural venues, which includes the Kings Theatre, a regional theatre built in 1907. The Pier here is great for a stroll on a hot summers day. It looks magnificent from any angle you view it.
The D-Day Museum is located in Southsea, was the place I wanted to visit having seen it on the Internet. It was opened in 1984 by Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, it tells the story of Operation Overlord during the Normandy D - Day landings. The D - Day Museum is home to the Overlord Embroidery and was specially built to hold it. The Overlord Embroidery took five years to complete and measures 83 metres long. It is the largest work of its kind in the world.
As well as the film and embroidery there are also vehicles and displays of other material associated with D-Day and the war. The museum has its own shop and restaurant. The museum is run by Portsmouth Museum Services, a branch of Portsmouth City Council, and is supported by Portsmouth D-Day Museum Trust, a registered charity. I have to say building work and renovation was still being carried out when I visited the Museum so I was a little unhappy with the £8.00 entrance ticket fee. Inside the Tapestry work they call it Embroidery work was unique. But the rest of the museum was clean laid out well but lacked something in presentation. Following a £5 million transformation project - with thanks to the Heritage Lottery Fund - the museum has now been transformed, to provide an engaging insight into the lives of those who took part in D - Day, whether they were individuals on the shore based in Portsmouth, or those who went over to Normandy.
To commemorate the millennium, a scenic walk was created extending to Gunwharf Quays from Southsea seafront. Being the beginning of April this walk which I completed was very cold and windy. The route is marked on the pavement, and is lined by distinctive blue street lanterns. The Portsmouth Naval Memorial, sometimes known as the Southsea Naval Memorial, is a war memorial and can be seen on the Southsea Common beside Clarence Esplanade, between Clarence Pier and Southsea Castle. The memorial commemorates about 25,000 British and Commonwealth sailors who were lost in both World Wars. Around 10,000 sailors in the First World War and 15,000 in the Second World War lost their lives. The memorial features a central obelisk, with names of the dead on bronze plaques arranged around the memorial according to the year of their death.
The model Village opposite the pier, the address is Southsea Model Village, Lumps Fort, Eastney Esplanade, Portsmouth, Hampshire, PO4 9RU. Where you can marvel at the 1/12th scale buildings, which features forty miniature buildings, houses, forts and castles, as well as a `G' scale garden railway. The third-acre landscaped gardens are set inside the grounds of an old Victorian fort. Contained inside are a large scale electric garden railway, a 100ft-long rifleman's tunnel, a scale model of Portsmouth Guildhall, a 10,000-gallon waterfall and stream, and a small toy museum. The cost was £4.00 to get in. There is a small cafe with a few chairs outside for light refreshments. Next to this Model Village with the entrance being through Southsea Rose Garden is Lumps Fort. Many people living here have almost forgotten about this fortified Fort. It was built around the mid 1800’s but some kind of fortification started here around 1805 and possibly even longer.

In Autumn 2018 a group of Scots decided to walk '500 miles for Independence' from the Isle of Skye to Edinburgh. The aim of the walk was to inspire support for Scottish Independence. The group met in Skye on 14th September 2018 and walked through Inverness, Peterhead, Aberdeen, Dundee, Perth, Stirling and Glasgow. On Saturday 6th October 2018 they joined with other Yes groups to undertake the final leg to Edinburgh. 100,000 marchers gathered on the last day to bring attention to support for independence.

A recurring element in Melissa’s working process is the research and exploration of unstable media. This exploration results in drawings, objects, installations, machines and public-rural interventions. Cruz Garcia is interested in an artisan and portable way of creating performative machines and digital media intending to put the public in a situation where he/she is active part of the work. Using purely what the possibilities and the circumstances provide and in contrast with the concept-subject she is currently employing, Melissa aims to formulate hypothetical futures. She takes discarded materials attributed to different cultures, de-contextualizes and refreshes them by a physical and conceptual transformation.
