Throughout the month of September, the spa town of Lisdoonvarna close to the Burren in Co. Clare, celebrates the world famous Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival with music and lots of fun.
The small spa town of Lisdoonvarna, with a population of around 800 people, has attracted visitors from all over Ireland to its mineral springs, since the 18th century. A long held traditional in this central town on the southern edges of the scenic Burren area, is the matchmaking festival. After the harvests in September, young farmers from all over Ireland would shuffle into Lisdoonvarna to find themselves a potential wife, with the help of the ‘basadoiri' or matchmakers.
This tradition is upheld today by fourth generation matchmaker (and horse dealer) Willie Daly and today the Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival is one of the largest matchmaking events in Europe attracting some 40,000 hopefuls and festival-goers, over the month. Held at weekends throughout September in venues throughout Lisdoonvarna, the festival events include traditional Irish dance and music, speed dating, horse racing and culminates with the Mr. Lisdoonvarna and Queen of the Burren competitions to find the most eligible lady & gentleman of that year.

This is my friend, the artist Bolan Chen's stamp. He lives in Japan now, we've lost touch the last couple of years now. He used to have a studio in Charing Cross Road, London WC1. It was a real ramshackle building, his was right at the top nearly opposite the Astoria. In the studio beneath was Y.B.A. sculptor Gavin Turk. He has limited English and I very limited Chinese, but we just got on very well and I'd meet him and we'd go out for dinner in the late nineties and then skip off to Bar Italia for coffee.
It's a long story how we became friends but it's because we both were amused by this mad fly posted image by the 'matchmaker', John Chin all over Chinatown in the 90's. Chin had photocopied and then coloured over his face until it had become bright red. As he photocopied photocopies he lost all sense of tone and he'd re black in his hair. It was a crazy and bizarre image. The above is a detail of an oil painting of John Chin by Bolan, this time with a vivid blue face. It's deliberately flatly painted. I forget how weird people find it.
Bolan was born in Shanghai. His father was a Beijing Opera star imprisoned in the cultural revolution. Bolan's house was taken over in the revolution and he lived in terror. He was not allowed to look at western art. His uncle secretly had stashed away some stamps under the floorboards which showed some work of French Impressionists. To Bolan these were the most beautiful, forbidden things he had ever seen and he decided then to make it to the West and paint. His paintings are haunting, beautiful and amazing. The John Chin is a little joke between us, a painting of a very bad photocopy.

Match maker Mulan! I got her awhile ago while thrift hunting! Her face has seen better days, and when I first brought her home her hair was horrendous! But her hair is nice and untangled now, and I just love her to bits! She's wearing Disney stores Mulans dress until I can get her her original one!

양희은, Yang Hee-Eun as the matchmaker in Korean Muscial "Backstreet Matchmaker"
She is a very famous singer in Korea. Especially, her song ,'Morning dew,' was a theme song of the student movement against military goverment in 70-80s, and it is still used.

This week, Bachelorette #3 asked to be serenaded with a sea shanty.
Renn, not being particularly good on the open seas, decided to go the route of singing a shanty about adventures on terra firma.
Being also that he is terrified of singing in public, he's also had a lot of erm...Dutch Courage beforehand.
-------------------------------------------------
Renn: *slightly slurred*
"We started fresh and full of gusto at The Hunters Lodge
The filthiest dive in all the West with stalactites of stodge
We bagged ourselves a corner and we blagged ourselves a brew
Then we asked: "Do you take solo?"
"Nope!" So we snuck out through the loo
Snuck out through the loo,
We snuck out through the loo,
We asked "Do you take Solo?"
"Nope!" So we snuck out through the loo
There's not a man among us who is brave and true.
Pursued by angry cavers we took solace in The Castle
We placated them with lollipops and saved us any hassle
We saw a fiddler fiddling right beside the fireplace
So I whipped out my accordion and smacked him round the face
Smacked him round the face
I smacked him round the face
I whipped out my accordion and smacked him round the face
And now he looks so ugly he can only play the bass!
Cause we're the Mendip Pirates!
And we don't give a toss
And all the pubs in Somerset are sick of us
Well every night we large it up
We booze and brawl and cuss
And we end it with an "Arr!"
We pressed on to the Ring 'O' Bells
Twas full of beery beer and beery blokes
Emitting Beery Smells
A hulking cyclops of a man stood over ten feet tall
He snarled: "You startin'?" and I said "Yes!"
And glassed him in the balls
Glassed him in the balls
I glassed him in the balls
He snarled: "you startin?" and I said "Yes!" And glassed him in the balls!
*howls of laughter* Then, we discussed the implications of the local planning laws!
Cause we're The Mendip Pirates!
And we don't give a toss
And all the pubs in Somerset are sick of us
Well every night we large it up
We booze and brawl and cuss
And we end it with an "Arr!" "
*Loudly and slurring terribly*
"T' Basshlerett Number Threeeeee!"
*Clunk*
"Zzzzzzzzzzz......"
---------------------------------------------------
I'd hate to be him in the morning.
(Extra fun bit for the curious- the actual song can be found here! The name is Mendip Pirates, obviously.)

This series of resin pendants were inspired by a sheet of reproductions of vintage matchbook cover art. I thought it would be really cute to pair the matchbooks with actual matches and embed them into resin
They are made from brass with Ice Resin and various found objects, brass components, bits of paper, match sticks, and glass beads. The resin is crystal clear, and very reflective, and amplifies the collage inside the brass pendant with amazing detail. Unfortunately, they are so reflective, they are a bit hard for me to photograph, but I love each one dearly!
This pendant was made from a raw brass frame pendant, which was heated with flame to give it interesting coloration. Some of the pendants in this series were also hand domed with a hammer and dapping block. The pendant was then carefully filled with the paper and found object bits and covered with a water-like layer of crystal clear resin.
