Los Altos United Water Polo Club Masters National Women's 20+ division - 5th overall

something old...

The View-Master has a long history, dating back to the late 1930's in Portland, Oregon, USA. It was initially conceived by William Gruber and Harold Graves. Graves, who was president of Sawyers Photographic Services saw the potential of Gruber's camera rig he has developed for taking stereo photographs. The pair formed a partnership and the View-Master was born in 1938.

Initially it was intended that the View-Master be an educational tool, primarily aimed at adults, but as time developed the appeal of the View-Master soon spread to other areas, one of the more notable being children's entertainment.

The US Military were keen advocates of the View-Master and had specially commissioned sets of reels produced to aid with artillery spotting and aircraft identification during World War II. They purchased many millions of reels for this purpose, together with 10's of thousands of Model B viewers.

Sawyers didn't have the market to themselves and the Tru-Vue Company was a serious rival. In 1951 Sawyers purchases the Tru-Vue Company and importantly also obtained the rights to present Disney characters on their reels.

Been meaning to do this ever since the first wave of spinjitzu ninjago, but never got around to actually building it. Was re-inspired again recently by similar mocs for the cmf ballerina.

This is the "Photo Master" camera. It is a simple point-and-shoot roll film camera which was made by the "Monarch Manufacturing Company" of Chicago Illinois USA around 1940. This is one of the many models of inexpensive pocket-sized cameras produced by the Monarch Company during the 1930s, 40s and early 1950s.

The chassis itself is made entirely out of thick black molded bakelite, and is a common chassis design for low-priced pocket cameras produced during that era. It closely resembles the "Dasco", "Majestic", "Waldorf" and "Churchill", also produced by Monarch. Like the "Churchill" and the "Dasco" this camera was marketed as an inexpensive compact "candid minicam" camera. The only difference between the various models is the name printed on the front circular faceplate, because of this they are often referred to by collectors as "doughnut cameras". Monarch basically re-released the exact same camera under various names, without having to make design changes. This lowered production costs, which intern allowed Monarch to sell their cameras at a lower price. Monarch would even release cameras such as the "Dick Tracy" and "Brenda Starr Club Reporter" under the brand name of the "Seymour Products Company".

The camera features a built-in optical viewfinder with a metal face plate located on the front. The shutter mechanism is a simple fixed speed rotary/disc type shutter, and features two different exposure settings; "INST" (instant) and "TIME". The camera would have originally used "Vest Pocket Film" or "A8" (127 film) and would have made sixteen exposures (4 by 6.5 cm frames) on a standard roll of 127 film. The rear cover is the camera is clips onto the main chassis via two metal tabs and features two green exposure number viewing windows. The lens on the camera is a simple meniscus lens.

Powder Gate is gothic gate in Prague, Czech Republic. It is one of the symbols of Prague, leading into thee Old Town.

Dating from 1475, the Powder Gate was built as one of 13 gates to the city of Prague. At the time construction began, it was connected (via the small bridge at the left of the photo) to the royal palace. Before construction was completed, however, King Vladislav Jagellonský moved his residence to Prague Castle in 1485. However, the Powder Gate remained important to the Bohemian kings - from that time until the 1836, the Bohemian monarchs would pass through the Powder Gate on their way to St. Vitus Cathedral to be crowned.

As the city grew beyond its old walls, however, the Powder Gate grew less and less important (except on those rare occasions when a monarch was being crowned). By the 17th century, it was being used as a gunpowder storage facility - it was at this time that it developed its name. Unfortunately, the Gate was severely damaged in 1757 when Prague was occupied by the Prussians. But, the Gate was eventually restored to its former glory in the 1870s and 1880s.

The Powder Gate was designed by master builder Matěj Rejsek to follow the design used by Peter Parler for the Old Town Bridge Tower at the base of Charles Bridge. It is now the lone remnant of the fortifications that once surrounded the city.
