On the train back to Cardiff after walking from Bristol to Bath on the trackbed of the former Midland Railway route between those two cities, a superb sunset to end a day that had started very wet but which had improved through the day. This was taken through the double-glazed windows of a train doing around 80 mph, with few gaps in the trees lining the trackside. This was between Newport and Cardiff, somewhere around Marshfield.
This is a former railroad bed turned walking trail North of Marshfield, Wisconsin where I grew up. Beautiful color earlier this week.

Recently acquired by West Coast Railway Co. 47854 shows off the smart first variation of WCRC livery, sadly this did not last, being replaced with todays drab shade.

I almost hesitate to post this...this was taken with my first digital camera, a Sony CD1000 (on low resolution to boot!) Anyway, I was just north of Marshfield, WI on Mann Rd when this one unit wonder came by. I can't remember if these are coal empties from Weston or ore empties headed back to the range. Oh how I wished I had set the camera to the right image size!
Here's a not-often-seen view of a Mt. Washington Cog Railway train on the 37.4% grade of Jacob's Ladder Trestle, as viewed from ground level. In this frame from May of 2009, we see M-1, the very first diesel-hydraulic locomotive built by the railway, heading for the summit, and about to enter a cloud deck that is enveloping the upper reaches of the mountain. The M-1 went into revenue service in early 2008 as a proof-of-concept vehicle, and by the middle of that year, the railroad had made a decision to begin building a fleet of locomotives just like her, with a plan to replace the steam locomotives in regular hourly service, by mid-2009. When this image was captured, M-1 was still the only diesel on the line, but two additional units, called M-2 and M-3, were just weeks away from making their debut. With the ability to make the summit in 40 minutes (vs. over an hour for a steam engine), and the ability to come down just as fast, the railroad would only need three of these beasts to handle operations on all but their busiest days. In ensuing years, the railroad would build 4 more of these units.
Taken during a 10 mile walk from Marshfield in South Gloucester which included Charmy Down and the impressive St Catherine’s Court. It was foggy and cold throughout especially on Charmy Down.

Following the failure of 66433 on the 4V38 Daventry to Wentloog Tesco train in the Washwood Heath area of Birmingham, 37609 & 37602 were sent from Crewe (along with 37218....which took the failed 66 back to Crewe) to work the train forward bringing about only the second appearance of 37s on this working.
The pair are seen nearing their destination nearly 5 hours late at Marshfield.

The C&NW had two yards in Marshfield- the Downtown Yard which why right off of Central Ave by the depot, and the New Yard, which just just south of 4th Street on line to Wisconsin Rapids and Fond do Lac. Over the years, I've collected many photos of the C&NW in Marshfield- most of them roster shots. Unfortunately, I have photographer info for few of them. If any of you has seen this before and knows who the photographer is, please let me know so that I can properly credit.
EWS liveried 67018 passes Marshfields with 1Z86 footex from London to Cardiff with a full rake of anglian stock on 12/5/01. (35mm scan)
70812 races along the main at Marshfield with the 4C21 09.55 Aberthaw Power Station-Avonmouth BHT coal empties. The scene here has changed considerably in the last year or so, with the onward march of the overhead electrification catenary evident. It's really quite sad to see, all in the name of progress of course...
