Art is not about the tools, whatever marketers have to say about it. Look at it from the perspective of a writer and you’ll see what I mean.
Click here to listen to the weekly podcast.
I know this is something that I bring up often, how it’s not the gear that makes the art, but the photographer. But you know what? This issue is one that can lead to a lot of trouble, so it’s something that I believe bears repeating. And, too, I think it’s important to examine the issue from different perspectives, the same as it is important to try new perspectives when out in the field taking photographs.
The truth is, photographers can devastate themselves financially in a “keeping up with the Jones” kind of race in which they feel it necessary to buy all the best equipment possible. Really, though, it just isn’t needed. So much of this desire to buy new things? It’s just marketing hype. The companies making all of this gear want you to spend your money on it because that’s how they make money, so they perpetuate this belief that gear is the thing that makes one a better photographer.
But here’s a simple metaphor to help us all see how it’s not the gear. Imagine a writer, and think about all the different ways a writer can write. Computers are the primary means these days, but many still enjoy using typewriters despite the fact that typewriters are less efficient at the task. Pencil and paper is a possibility, too—and some writers prefer to write by hand.
Ultimately, the tools don’t make the writing any more or less good. It’s not the computer that gives the writer command of nouns and verbs. The writer still knows how to structure a sentence, structure a story, develop a character—you name it. Whether the writer uses a computer or a pencil, these skills are part of him, not the tools.
So what is the purpose of the gear? Well, it’s easier to use. One can write a whole lot faster with a computer, and word processing software makes editing much easier. But the task is still possible with a pencil and paper.
Now let’s apply all of this to photography. Just as is true for writers, all a photographer really needs are the tools to paint with light. Even with an old film camera full of light leaks, a photographer who is an artist at heart will be able to produce a good photograph. Sure, better tools do make photography easier—and there’s nothing wrong with having these things if they are within our means. But no matter the camera, the lenses, and all the rest, a photographer still knows the basics of composition, exposure, color, contrast, and so on. This is knowledge within the photographer, not within the camera. That’s the important takeaway. There is no need to invest lots and lots of money if you can’t or don’t want to. Art can still be made with lesser tools because ultimately, it’s not the tools that make the art, but the mind wielding those tools. The tools only exist to make the act of creating a little bit easier.

Bentley Motors Limited is a British manufacturer and marketer of luxury cars and SUVs—and a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group since 1998.
Headquartered in Crewe, England, the company was founded as Bentley Motors Limited by W. O. Bentley in 1919 in Cricklewood, North London—and became widely known for winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1924, 1927, 1928, 1929 and 1930.
Prominent models extend from the historic sports-racing Bentley 4½ Litre and Bentley Speed Six; the more recent Bentley R Type Continental, Bentley Turbo R, and Bentley Arnage; to its current model line, including the Flying Spur, Continental GT, Bentayga and the Mulsanne—which are marketed worldwide, with China as its largest market as of November 2012.
Today most Bentley models are assembled at the company's Crewe factory, with a small number assembled at Volkswagen's Dresden factory, Germany, and with bodies for the Continental manufactured in Zwickau and for the Bentayga manufactured at the Volkswagen Bratislava Plant.
The joining and eventual separation of Bentley and Rolls-Royce followed a series of mergers and acquisitions, beginning with the 1931 purchase by Rolls-Royce of Bentley, then in receivership. In 1971, Rolls-Royce itself was forced into receivership and the UK government nationalised the company—splitting into two companies the aerospace division (Rolls-Royce Plc) and automotive (Rolls-Royce Motors Limited) divisions—the latter retaining the Bentley subdivision. Rolls-Royce Motors was subsequently sold to engineering conglomerate, Vickers and in 1998, Vickers sold Rolls-Royce to Volkswagen AG.
Intellectual property rights to both the name Rolls-Royce as well as the company's logo had been retained not by Rolls-Royce Motors, but by aerospace company, Rolls-Royce Plc, which had continued to license both to the automotive division. Thus the sale of "Rolls-Royce" to VW included the Bentley name and logos, vehicle designs, model nameplates, production and administrative facilities, the Spirit of Ecstasy and Rolls-Royce grille shape trademarks (subsequently sold to BMW by VW)—but not the rights to the Rolls-Royce name or logo. The aerospace company, Rolls-Royce Plc, ultimately sold both to BMW AG.

inagorillacostume.com/2011/search-google-mobile-insights-...
Wednesday Search giant Google has announced some innovative new changes to their search and mobile platform and guerrilla marketers everywhere should take note.
Some of the key insights that Google revealed yesterday regarding user behaviour and mobile search were:
Mobile search does not exhibit the same trends as desktop search.
Although desktop search tends to dip heavily during the weekend (particularly on Friday and Saturday), this does not reflect a drop in our “need for knowledge”.
Mobile search surges on Fridays and Saturdays thus suggesting that people are still searching a great deal on the weekends, but are searching from different locations and with a different context.
Mobile search does not appear to show the same “Christmas calm or summer slumps” in terms of quantity of searches as we have seen on desktop search.
Mobile is still growing, and growing faster than desktop search (which tailed off after the first three years of Google desktop search)
An interesting development Google announced was that their search homepage when accessed by mobile devices now shows quicklinks or buttons that allow for easier access from mobile devices.
Implications:
This new feature suggests that optimising Google Local (Places) pages is more important than ever for clients with physical locations! Google clearly seems to be paying more attention to mobile user behaviour and offering a different search experience for mobile users, and we would strongly suggest that clients explore creative ways in which they can do the same.
Another cool feature is the new "search by image" functionality which allows users to enter a URL or upload an image of their own to learn more about the image.
Yet still, as if all this new excitement wasn't enough, another interesting addition was Google Instant Pages. Like Google instant search, Google will start loading your website pages before visitors even arrive at your site. This should aim to decrease website page load times and additionally, may mean that Google's search algorithm may penalize sites for slow page loading times.
*For the moment it appears that this only occurs for the first result. It seems unlikely that users pause all that long when they are clicking the first result but it will be interesting to monitor the impact this may have on slow sites ranking first and whether Google is able to roll it out to the listings beyond position 1.
Recap & What to Do Next
*Local is more important than ever – optimise your Google Places presence as geo-location and accurate venue details are even more easily accessible and important for the growing mobile search market.
*Speed is likely to be used even more heavily as a ranking factor now that slow sites will potentially cost Google more money as they will be more important than ever (?)
*New user behaviour implications about peak mobile searches – the implication is that weekends and holidays should see shifts from desktop spend (or copy) towards a focus on mobile optimised accounts and copy.
*New found importance on choosing good imagery – and trying to find images that are relevant to the keywords targeted on a given page.
*Image search features should make it easier to seek attribution (i.e. build links) from other sites using images you own.
*Mobile search is still growing rapidly and is an untapped resource for a large number of companies.

Digital marketers who continue to plan campaigns months in advance and then unleash them will lose relevance. The more-successful programs going forward must feature real human beings. They will need to be dynamic, adaptable and able to turn on a dime depending on where the live conversation goes. That's no easy feat and it will require brands and agencies to rewire themselves for speed.
