Michelangelo's urban-design grouping. A setting for three mutually enhancing buildings and a "chamber for Marcus Aurelius" in the equestrian bronze. Capitoline Square or Campigdolio Piazza.
The Equestrian Statue of Marcus Aurelius, a prominent ancient Roman bronze statue located on the Capitoline Hill in Rome, Italy
This over-life-size statue depicts the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius elegantly mounted on his horse. It is one of the most iconic surviving monuments from ancient Rome. Originally standing on the Capitoline Hill, it was moved to the Capitoline Museums in 1990 to protect it from the elements. A faithful replica was placed on the square in 1997, ensuring that visitors could still experience the grandeur of this monumental work in its historic setting.
Measuring 4m high, nearly 4m wide and weighing more than 2500kg, the statue depicts the emperor addressing his citizens with an outstretched arm in a gesture known as allocutio. Traces of gilding show that it was once covered in shining gold, making it even more striking. Scholars believe it was created around 176 AD to commemorate Marcus Aurelius’ victory over the Germanic tribes, or possibly in 180 AD, shortly after his death.
Remarkably, the statue’s survival is due to a case of mistaken identity. For centuries, it was believed to depict Constantine the Great, the first Christian emperor, and so it was spared from being melted down. This confusion arose because of perceived facial similarities to figures on the Arch of Constantine although later evidence revealed that some reliefs on the arch were actually repurposed from monuments of Marcus Aurelius himself.
Marcus Aurelius, a philosopher-emperor, is portrayed with a beard and curly hair in a Greek style, symbolizing rationality, and his extended right hand is interpreted as an "adlocutio" pose, a Roman salute demonstrating authority.

Marcus Aurelius, Emperor of Rome from 161-180, led wars against the Parthians and Germanic tribes in Gaul, and seems an all around good guy.
