This photo is an evidence of my stubbornness - half of the shot was in glaring sunlight, half in deep shadow. Not ideal for any camera... Still, it is surprisingly close to what I was aiming for.
At the Musei Capitolini, Rome. The sculpture is of the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius (lived 121-180 A.D., ruled 161-180) - and based on the style it can be dated to the beginning of his rule. Or more exactly the head is. The body is not his. When this head was found it was joined with a (more or less) random headless body. The body has a lorica, a body armour, decorated with winged figures symbolising Victory, and probably dates to the early Imperial period (some 150 years earlier than the head).

It was something of a memorial traveling up to Groningen and walking - now alone - in the Prinsentuin, that exquisite pearl of gardens in the heart of Stad. This wonderful Imperial Purple-Blue Thistle, Echinops ritro 'Veitch's Blue', about to blossom, lifted my spirits. And I thought of the wise words of that grand philosopher-emperor Marcus Aurelius (121-180) in his Personal Notes, usually called his Meditations, Book 6, 39. I quote the Greek in tribute to my erstwhile rose-loving classicist companion:
Οἷς συγκεκλήρωσαι πράγμασι, τούτοις συνάρμοζε σεαυτόν, καὶ οἷς συνείληχας ἀνθρώποις, τούτους φίλει, ἀλλ ἀληθινῶς.
Freely paraphrased: 'Learn to accept what fate has brought you and love the people whom fate has put on your path'.
We talked often about this perambulating in the shady berceaux.
What more can I say?

Marble head of the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius, died in 180 AD; Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge. Having a beard like a Greek philosopher was rather unusual for a Roman emperor. However, Marcus Aurelius did in fact have philosophical ambitions and his "Meditations" are still today in print. Fuji X-E2.

Completed in 193, it celebrates his reign from 161 to 180 AD.

Ancient Temple ruins at Olympos / Turkey. On the hill to the east of the path looms a well-preserved marble door frame built into a wall of ashlar masonary. At the foot of the carved doorway is a statue base dedicated by an inscription to Marcus Aurelius.
