The emperor has emerged from behind glass, and stands triumphant guard in the centre of the great new space of the Capitoline Museums.
Piazza del Campidoglio
Michelangelo designed the pavement in the centre of the square in which stands the equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius which survived the Middle Ages as it was thought that it represented the Emperor Constantine, the protector of the Christian religion
The much restored statue has a head and torso that do not belong together. The head portrays Marcus Aurelius in his 'second portrait type' - as an adult, succeeding his ortrait as a boy. This type lasted from his appointment as Consul in 140 to his accession as Emperor in 161 AD
- head: circa 150 AD
- body: 50-80 AD
- acquired 1791. Statue found near Tivoli.
Altes Museum, Berlin

Antalya’da bulunan Aspendos Tiyatrosu, Roma İmparatoru Marcus Aurelius döneminde (M.S. 161–180) mimar Zenon tarafından yapıldı. Anadolu’da sahne binası ayakta kalmış tek Roma tiyatrosu olan yapı, konumlandığı dik yamacın eğimi sayesinde akustik özellikleri açısından üstünlük gösterir. Selçuklu Türklerinin bölgede hâkimiyet kurmasının ardından restore edilerek kervansaray olarak kullanılmıştır. 1930’da yöreyi ziyaret eden Atatürk, uzun süre ihmal edilmiş olan tiyatronun onarılıp yeniden kültürel faaliyetlere açılmasını istemiştir. Günümüzde Aspendos, tiyatro oyunlarının yanı sıra opera, konser ve festivallere ev sahipliği yapmaktadır.

The Marcus Aurelius statue at Lincoln Field, with Sayles Hall in the background.
College Hill, Providence, Rhode Island.
Either Hadrian, Marcus Aurelius or Lucius Verus - I think this is likely to be Lucius Verus, but he doesn't usually have a mustache like this... not sure
The cobbled pathway over probably one of the oldest bridges in Scotland, dating from when the Romans pushed forward from the traditional northern boundary of their empire, Hadrian's Wall in England, into the Pictish tribelands of Scotland. The incursion lasted from 138 to 164AD, and was marked by the building of a new barricade, the Antonine Wall, under Emperor Antoninus Pius. Antoninus was unable to conquer the northern tribes - well, they were Scottish, after all - and so when Marcus Aurelius became emperor he abandoned the Antonine Wall and occupied Hadrian's Wall once again in 164AD.
This 1850-year-old arched bridge, across South Calder Water just before it flows into Strathclyde Loch, was built to serve the nearby Bothwellhaugh Roman Fort and its bath house, the remains of which can still be seen.
Taken in Strathclyde Country Park, Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, Scotland, on December 31, 2007.

Marcus Aurelius (copy of an original in the Capitoline Museum) in the forecourt of the Capitoline Museum. The statue is considered to be the standard by which all subsequent mounted statues were judged. A very rare piece of original late antique bronzework, saved during the christianisation of Rome by the misunderstanding over the identity of the rider. Rather like the EU flag in the background, given that the statue and courtyard appear on the Italian 50cent coin. Spring 2007 with my Nikkormat EL.

Kurz ist das Leben! Einzige Frucht des Erdendaseins sind aufrechte Gesinnung und gemeinnützige Werke. Life is short! The only fruit of being on earth are an upright opinion and non-profit deeds. La vida es corta. La sola fruta del ser sobre la terra son un recto modo de pensar y hechos sin fines lucrativos.

The equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius, Capitoline Hill, Rome.
This is a replica of the original Roman bronze statue, which sits inside the museum behind it. The original is one of the first great equestrian statues of history. It's pretty cool - you can see the individual veins in the horse.
(replica) The scene of Hadrian's adopted child Antoninus Pius adopting Lucius Verus and Marcus Aurelius. Front left is Antoninus Pius, on the right is the Emperor Hadrian, and in the middle is the eigh-year old Lucius Verus. Behind Antoninus Pius is the 17-year old Marcus Aurelius and behind Hadrian is a male figure probably representing Lucius Verus' recently deceased father Aelius Verus.

Curetes Way took its name from the priests of the city's chief goddess Artemis who were called Curetes.

Along the colonnaded Roman main street (cardo) in Sardis are shops dating from the 4th century CE. One was a shop of Jacob, an elder of the synagogue. The synagogue (on the other side of the shop walls, along the south side of the palaestra), which Lucius Verus (Roman Emperor with Marcus Aurelius 161-169 CE) might have given to the Jewish community, occupies a building that once belonged to the gymnasium complex. The top of the bath-gymnasium complex, completed around the middle of the 2nd century CE, features a monumental colonnaded Marble Court, added in 211 CE, dedicated by Sardis citizens to Geta (Roman Emperor 209-211 CE), though his named has been erased, and Caracalla (Roman Emperor 209-217 CE), sons of Septimius Severus (Roman Emperor 193-211 CE), and their mother Julia Domna (170-217 CE). The Capitoline Hill, between the Forum and the Campus Martius, is one of the most famous and highest of the seven hills of Rome. The Capitoline contains relatively few ancient ground-level ruins, as they are almost entirely covered up by Medieval palaces (now the Capitoline Museums) that surround a piazza. A significant portion of the architecture in this area was designed by Michelangelo
