Not all of the needed parameters could be extracted from Rhino, so we then tried to replicate the virtual model in MATLAB. When projected, however, the results, still did not align with the physical model.
Apollo Mapping Camera
Flight Backup
Mapping the Lunar Surface was a high priority during Apollo 15, 16, and 17. Mounted in the service module, the mapping camera captured high-resolution images of the Moon as the spacecraft orbited. While returning to Earth, command module pilots performed spacewalks to retrieve the film canisters, mounted on the right side of the camera.
This flight backup, available for those missions if the installed cameras were damaged or malfunctioned before launch, is the best surviving example. The flown versions remained in service modules, which burned up when they reentered the Earth’s atmosphere.
"Mapping memory: the brains behind remembering" is the title of the Rosalind Franklin Prize Lecture by Professor Eleanor A. Maguire, Wellcome Trust Centre for Neuroimaging, University College London.
She talks about recent advances in brain imaging technology that now offer the prospect of decoding memories from neural activity in the hippocampus of humans in vivo. Furthermore, in the last number of years it has become apparent that the hippocampus does not act alone in supporting memory. Using brain imaging it has been possible to delineate a distributed network of brain regions involved in supporting memories of our personal experiences.

So, I you hadn't seen the physical layout of this place, but only these buttons, the mapping looks insane. I've seen the place (Stansted airport, UK), and I still find that mapping insane.
Long before Election Day, Hurricane Sandy, the presidential debates, Libya, the 47 percent, the conventions or even the Iowa Caucuses, candidates and their strategists toiled away behind the scenes, mapping a path to victory. For some, the long hours and hard work paid off. For others, the efforts came up short. We’ll kick off our series by convening the lead strategists and managers from the Obama and Romney camps, in a freewheeling panel discussion about what went right, what went wrong, and what we learned in the process.

We went out mapping, or more precisely doing aerial photography, flying a digital camera under a nice big green balloon from the green of Goldsmiths University. The MA is Design at Goldsmiths has an option called “Design & Environment” supervised by Prof Jennifer Gabrys. It is a course that initiates students to alternatives design and environmental methods and pratices. This hands-on experiment was lead by Cesar Harada acting both as Goldsmiths tutor and Public Laboratory instructor. The mappers -who are also the authors of this post- were Anuja Uttamrao Borker, Inessa Demidova, Shan-Yu Hsu, Dk Hajah Hazwani Pg Dato Haji Jaberudin, Federica Sterpos, Chian-Yun Yang, Yifan Zhang, Elvira Grob.

Projection Mapping
Overview
I wanted to create an installation for a live music performance. I decided to create a hanging cardboard surface on which I could project imagery. Each element of the structure would be an individual shape in three dimensions and I would stagger the depths of each one to create a unique way to display projected content, that in itself would look more dynamic because of the nature of depth of field.
Development
Inspired by 3d origami paper folding, I set about making unique and organic geometric polygons. I then made a small scale model to see how the structure would hang and to easily envisage the depth of the piece when ultimately scaled up. Using large sheets of card, I then sketched and cut the shapes, turning and folding them into a 3d surface to the orientation and dimensions of the model.
Construction
Using a projector and a test image I live traced the cluster of shapes and with Adobe After Effects I developed my own projection mapped art that could be spread across each one. Every layer could provide different content for each shape, or the entire cluster could be used as one overall mask with which to project a single video or image. Allowing for the depth of field created by the angles and distance in the 3D structures, I had to make sure the artwork would project precisely onto the individual structure. I carefully measured the distance and angle of how each component was hung in the test environment. Fire safety regulations meant that the practical application of hanging each element needed to be done with approved stage wire and have the cardboard pieces sprayed with flame retardant coating before the final installation.
Installation
On the day of the live event, I installed the structures into the performance space (above the stage) in the venue, using the test screen to manually align each component. I instructed a lighting engineer as to when and how to project the content I had provided.
Conclusion
As the technology involved the practice develops I would love to further explore projection mapping in my studies.
An example of the content displayed on the surface can be found here in an After Effects animation:
