Thank you.
The Winged Mapleleaf mussel is considered the mussel most endangered in the Upper Mississippi River watershed, with the only remnant population existing in the lower St. Croix River. Genoa National Fish Hatchery (WI) was able to infest over 330 channel catfish with Winged Mapleleaf mussel glochidia. These fish were over wintered at the Hatchery and then placed in mussel cages in the St. Croix River. These recovery actions produced an estimated 62,000 juvenile mussels. This long term project has yielded over four-hundred 7 and 8 year old endangered Winged Mapleleaf mussels of reproducing age according to 2014 surveys conducted at cage locations from 2008.
