A single maple leaf on a young tree stem.

Nothing Like some autumn colour to splash some ruby into your day.

[ Explored ] October 9th, 2010 - Thank you~

These are some of the leaves I found under one single Maple tree. I was in awe of all the shades of color in the hundreds of leaves that had fallen.

Here's some basic info on how and why leaves change color in the Fall:

Leaves are nature's food factories. A chemical called chlorophyll helps make photosynthesis happen. Chlorophyll is what gives plants their green color. As summer ends and autumn comes, the days get shorter and shorter. This is how the trees know to begin getting ready for winter.

During winter, there is not enough light or water for photosynthesis. The trees will rest, and live off the food they stored during the summer. They begin to shut down their food-making factories. The green chlorophyll disappears from the leaves. As the bright green fades away, we begin to see yellow and orange colors. Small amounts of these colors have been in the leaves all along. We just can't see them in the summer, because they are covered up by the green chlorophyll.

Happy Friday friends!! :-)

Happy Macro Mondays

The last maple leaf on the branch and it is pointed southward. I will be away from Flickr for a while. Continue to enjoy pressing the shutter button and posting your photos.

Last year for Canada Day I did a version of the flag from a photo of a maple leaf that I had taken. I will see if I can find it and put it n Comments.

This year, I decided to change to colours in consideration of the recent findings of unmarked graves of First Nations children.

Zen maple leaf

Kokedera (moss temple), called Koinzan Saihoji is a beautiful temple in the mountains of Kyoto and a UNESCO site. It was originally a villa from the Asuka Period (538-710), and after it fell into disrepair it was converted to a Zen temple by Muso Soseki who created its gardens. Over the centuries, the deep carpet of mosses (120 species that thrive in the wet mountain climate) that it is famous for gradually took over the original white sand of the gardens when there were no funds for upkeep. I loved how the falling maple leaves lay on the deep carpet of mosses, surrounded by dried cypress needles. An advance reservation is needed to visit the temple and it can take weeks to get permission.

Maple Leaf

We have not yet seen much in the way of Autumn colour, rather late this year.

Kath has a delightful 'Dwarf Maple' and a couple of the leaves are showing some colour.

It has been a very busy day and I have to go out again shortly. I will catch up with your images as I can.

50mm Lens with a canon ef25 ii extension tube to get in a little closer.

At first, I thought this was the lucky last leaf on the tree, but then I noticed it was just a caught leaf. I am sure it will still bring me luck! :-)

The Maple Leaf Forever is a Canadian song written by Alexander Muir (1830–1906) in 1867, the year of Canada's Confederation. It was once Canada’s de facto national anthem, but has faded into obscurity in the 150 years since it was composed. With the maple leaf dominant on our flag, perhaps it should be sung once again.

This photo is a composite with the prominent leaf in the fore superimposed over a less resplendent bed of fallen leaves. I think this qualifies for a Slider Sunday.

The two photos were taken with a macro lens and composited in post.

Maple leaf on my street, October, 2020.

Shoreline, Washington State, USA

Yesterday: sun and a belly shot. Joy!

Today, more rain. I love rain, and we moved to the Pacific Northwest knowing we'd have plenty of rain to soothe my soul. Rain just doesn't make for much contrast. And deciduous trees have lost their leaves, hence looking for them on the ground after a rain.

May I take this opportunity to express my hope for the incoming new president and beautiful vice president? It has been a long siege and a bit wearing on the spirits, even on my own photography.

Please join me in wearing a mask! (How can science be a partisan issue here?!)

Green leaves turn a delicate violaceous-pink in the fall.

(reflection 04/28/20)

This leaf is from my favorite maple tree, that resides in my backyard. I am so fortunate that this tree can still produce such beauty. We have been through some rough patches.

I stand before you on this particular evening...the sun is setting...and its light is shinning through you, exposing every detail of your beauty especially in this leaf...which has unfolded in all its majestic potential. A number of your kind are still pushing out...waiting to stretch as you have!

In these unusual times, it is this kind of beauty....paying attention to the ordinary that is extra ordinary...because the forces that shape my awareness have drawn me to you...here are now. Why, do I burst in joy? I am not standing before a mighty ocean...but before you, a simple leaf...and yet the overwhelming feelings are the same.

May I always carry this awareness...this unfolding of creation, in its smallest expression...enfolding me in a liturgical experience...and I fall silent!

We had a tornado watch and very strong winds yesterday, all these beautiful leaves are gone!

R.I.P Leonard

Very upsetting news to learn of Leonard's passing.

The world has one less great musician and poet...

We thank you for your music and songs...

Come over to the window, my little darling,

I'd like to try to read your palm.

I used to think I was some kind of Gypsy boy

before I let you take me home.

Now so long, Marianne, it's time that we began

to laugh and cry and cry and laugh about it all again....
