More stick figure mayhem, this time at the edge of a pit crater in Manuka State Park.

Sadly, this was the second or third most interesting thing we saw on a multi-mile hike in the park - one of the few missteps we had in choosing our activities. (Don't get me wrong, anywhere else, it would have been a cool hike, but in Hawaii, it suffers by comparison...)

Manuka Oval, Canberra

Manuka State Park. Planted tree, looks somewhat like Sapindus saponaria from a distance but the leaves (not actually compound) are alternate. Seeds rattle loosely inside the fleshy fruits. Any ideas? I'm assuming it's introduced, but this "garden" has an assortment of both aliens and semi-rare natives.

This section of the Manuka Natural Area showed a remarkable diversity with lush vegetation from the forest floor with its moss and ferns up through the understory of shrubs to the tall canopy trees. There are over 20 species of Myrsine in Hawaii.

The Mānuka shrub (Leptospermum scoparium) is a New Zealand native. Masses of these tiny flowers can cover the shrub. The flower is approximately 10mm in diameter.

.

Wikipedia: Mānuka is a prolific scrub-type tree and is often one of the first species to regenerate on cleared land. It is typically a shrub growing to 2–5 m tall, but can grow into a moderately sized tree, up to 15 m or so in height. It is evergreen, with dense branching and small leaves 7–20 mm long and 2–6 mm broad, with a short spine tip. The flowers are white, occasionally pink, 8–15 mm with five petals
