La mantis religiosa debe su nombre a sus prominentes patas delanteras, que están dobladas y juntas en un ángulo que recuerda a la posición de oración. Mantis hace referencia al género mantis, al que solo pertenecen ciertas especies de mantis religiosa.
A pesar de su nombre, estos fascinantes insectos son unos fantásticos depredadores. Su cabeza triangular se alza en lo alto de un estirado cuello, que de hecho es un tórax alargado. Los mántidos pueden girar la cabeza 180 grados para escudriar los alrededores con sus dos grandes ojos compuestos y tres simples situados entre ellos.
Back at home again, probably gonna stay for awhile, although the "wildlife" activities have slowed down a lot with Fall just around the corner. I find this to be one of the more endearing of my mantis efforts - it's all about the look and what passes for a blue nose in my book. Do check it large for the full impact.

Fun with insects. :) I took this a few weeks ago after a bunch of mantises had just hatched. This guy was tiny.
A praying mantis has two large, compound eyes that work together to help it decipher visual cues. But strangely, the praying mantis has just a single ear, located on the underside of its belly, just forward of its hind legs.
The praying mantis is a carnivore, eating mainly insects and other small animals. Many gardeners and farmers welcome them, because the insects they eat are often pests that hurt crops.
In some traditions, the praying mantis is regarded as a protective symbol. It is believed to bring good luck and safeguard individuals from negative energies or harm.

I always wanted to take a photo of a praying mantis while hunting or feeding. Surprisingly, I got an opportunity in our garden, the mantis was chewing a sting bug and did not bother that I was sneaking around with the camera.
Used a Canon 500D Macro front lens attached to the 70-200 f2.8 IS III.

Entre las fotos de archivo aparece esta pequeña e interesante criatura. Creo que se trata de Ameles (Apterameles) decolor (Charpentier, 1825) y está citada en la península ibérica.
Este mántido enano no medía más de 3 cms. De ojos redondeados y cuerpo estirado. Se parece mucho a Ameles heldreichi pero desconozco si esta última se encuentra en España. Y no parece A. spallanziana de mayor tamaño y abdomen más abultado y respingón… pero todo podría ser.
Among the archive photos appears this interesting little creature. I think it is Ameles (Apterameles) decolor (Charpentier, 1825) and it is cited in the Iberian Peninsula.
This dwarf mantid was no more than 3 cm. With round eyes and a stretched body. It looks a lot like Ameles heldreichi but I don't know if the latter is found in Spain. And it doesn't look like A. spallanziana larger and with a more bulky and upturned abdomen... but it could be anything.
Parmi les photos d'archives figure cette intéressante petite créature. Je pense qu'il s'agit d'Ameles (Apterameles) decolor (Charpentier, 1825) et qu'il est cité dans la péninsule ibérique.
Cette mante naine ne mesurait pas plus de 3 cm. Avec des yeux ronds et un corps allongé. Il ressemble beaucoup à Ameles Heldreichi mais je ne sais pas si ce dernier se trouve en Espagne. Et ça ne ressemble pas à A. spallanziana plus grand et avec un abdomen plus volumineux et retroussé... mais ça pourrait être n'importe quoi.

The mantis' articulated head and expressive eyes lend it an air of intelligence almost unthinkable for an insect. These are never aggressive animals. This 1 was, at first, fast moving, then it seemed at ease perched on the hand for surprisingly longer than a few moments, then when it was time to return it to its vegetation hunting grounds it tried to return to my hand. Of course these animals have their detractors, with its startling - some would say creepy- appearance, but behavior like this can be nothing but endearing.
