View of the Earth's terminator, taken [well] after trans-earth insertion during Apollo 11's return. Photo taken using a 250 mm lens.

I was surprised to hear of Neil Armstrong's death at the age of 82. It seemed that he would forever be the youthful all-American that first set foot on the moon. As 12-year old, I followed the Apollo program religiously, even reading the dry but yet important volumes put out by NASA that detailed the concepts and how we got there. I kept a large scrapbook of the feats of the program, and especially of Apollo 11. Unfortunately, that scrapbook vanished when I went away to college, but I still have my stamp collection, and this block of 4 stamps was something that I had purchased back then. Forty cents worth of memorabilia that is priceless to me. I think people underestimate the feeling of pride and accomplishment that came with Armstrong's first words when he stepped onto the lunar surface. It truly was a surreal experience, and am glad to have witnessed it live.

The first of two pictures Charlie Duke took to show how dirty John Young's suit has become. John is working at the LMP seat. Note the bright, rectangular pattern on the high-gain antenna. The pattern is sunlight reflected by the mirrored tiles on the top of the TV camera. The frame is sunstruck, adding an artistic flare to the image.

From the ALSJ:

"Neil turned to his right to take this photo while waiting for Buzz to get farther out of the cabin."

This photo was taken "in-between" Neil's iconic sequence of photos showing Buzz egressing the LM and descending its ladder to the lunar surface.

The still-covered lunar plaque is visible between the sixth & seventh ladder rungs (counting from top down). In fact, the cover's release and extraction latch is even discernible.

“APOLLO 11 Commander Neil Armstrong demonstrates how he will descend the ladder, place one foot in Lunar Module pad and then make the first manned footprint on the Moon. Apollo 11 mission is scheduled for July 1969 to land two astronauts on the Moon and return them safely to Earth.”

Additionally, within those other photos, I noted that the first stage seen here is marked as "SA-5". However, the upper stages are identical to the Juno upper stages of SA-1, SA-2 and SA-3. Possibly a Frankenstein-like assembly in order to have a "complete" vehicle to have on display for the President?

Mr. Teague is another veritable cornucopia of Apollo photos and facts, across the web, along with Eric Jones' Apollo Lunar Surface Journal, both frankly mind-boggling...for folks such as myself.

I receive no endorsement fees or any 'perks' for either of the above statements, it's just fact.

Apollo 15 pre-mission "WALKING TRAVERSES" perspective view.

Note that even as of 1971, mountain peaks were being depicted (at least in this rendering of Hadley Delta/Mount Hadley - Hadley Mons) as being sharper and more angular than is actually the case. Do not underestimate the power of micrometeoroid erosion...over a seriously long long time.

“View toward the W-NW out Buzz's window after the EVA, with the flag shadow.”

Paraphrased from the ALSJ website.

Sadly, no such shadow falls anymore at Tranquility Base.

The shadow of the appendage extending from LM (ascent stage) shadow is that of the S-Band Steerable Antenna.

What a remarkable accomplishment.

Per the ALSJ:

“At some point after 167:22:43,

Dave took this picture of the hammer and feather lying next to the MESA. The picture was taken from a point west of the MESA. It appears that Dave kicked the hammer and feather out of the way after finishing his gravity demonstration, probably so that they wouldn't get stepped on.”

An excellent view of the desolate lunarscape at Station 4 showing scientist-astronaut Harrison H. Schmitt, lunar module pilot, working at the Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV) during the second Apollo 17 extravehicular activity (EVA) at the Taurus-Littrow landing site. This is the area where Schmitt first spotted the orange soil, the orange soil is clearly visible on either side of the LRV in this picture. Shorty Crater is to the right, and the peak in the center background is Family Mountain. A portion of South Massif is on the horizon at the left edge. This photograph was taken by astronaut Eugene A. Cernan, commander. While astronauts Cernan and Schmitt descended in the Lunar Module (LM) "Challenger" to explore the moon, astronaut Ronald E. Evans, command module pilot, remained with the Command and Service Modules (CSM) in lunar orbit.
