"...Nests are made from spider webs and a wide array of plant materials. This could partially explain the long assembly time because it must take forever to manipulate a spider web into doing your bidding without it sticking to you in the process. Once the outside is complete, the nest is lined with feathers and animal hair to make it warm and snuggly. The entrance and exit are a hole left at the top where the couple can fly in and out.

According to The Birds of North America Online database, this sturdy nest also makes the perfect incubator for eggs during the day and the lower half is sometimes placed strategically in the sun to enhance this effect allowing both mom and dad to leave the eggs unattended while they hunt for lunch. The nest’s shape can hold anywhere from five to 15 eggs. Fifteen seems like a lot of eggs for a bird that’s about four inches long, yikes!

Dan Cooper, President of Cooper Ecological Monitoring, Inc. and local bird expert who wrote the book Important Bird Areas of California, vouched for the Bushtit’s reproductive capabilities.

“They do have exceptionally large broods, 10 plus young is not uncommon, said Cooper. “This is very different from most birds aside from waterfowl, quail, and a couple other groups. This adaptation probably allows them to thrive despite their tiny size and delicateness. They’re one of the most successful urban species, nesting in a huge variety of environments, within the most developed neighborhoods. In this way, they’re like pigeons, though 99.99% of the residents of Los Angeles have never seen or heard of them.”

Since you have a very good chance of seeing a Bushtit, if you do spot one while you’re with someone make sure you say, “There’s a Bushtit, a member of the Long-tailed Tits family.” Because seriously when are you going to have the chance again to say “tit” that many times in a sentence without offending somebody?"

Possibly for a maintenance pod.

Was hunting through my archives for something different & found these manipulations.....the arty side in me!

The photo was taken with my 9500 in 2007. I started off with an Orb and changed to an oblong, thought it had a greater effect of patterns & detail.

No mistaking it here, I had fun with this one manipulating it for high contrast and intense color. Just having fun so be kind

so when it comes to art, its my way of processing issues, both mine and the worlds.. it really does keep me sane and my head a bit clear.. so I do still do the odd hand drawing and painting, but i love the digital art. I use a very basic AI tool because i don't want the system to do it all for me, i just need a template, which i then rip apart in layers and by an open source tool (gimp) and transform it with digital drawing on top, manipulated and polish in a tool called Pixlr. some can take a long time, all have concepts. All comes from with in me. My art can be dark, political, fantasy and I love to play with different styles, Grotesque art, abstract, surreal.. I don't do it for peoples approval, I do it in the hope even if its not to some ones liking, that they glance at it and at least give a moment to the subject matter - esp. environmental & social issues. so there we go.. that's me.

The basic picture was taken while driving in the California desert. Over the last year I raised the mountains, made the terrain rougher, and added this sunset ( which is a sunrise here ). I fought my natural inclination of colorizing EVERYTHING and actually removed the saturation from the foreground.

To manipulate or not, that is the question.

SX 70 manipulation is the process of physically (not digitally) destroying the image…once started, there’s no turning back.

Decisions have to be made before I start manipulating. Decisions on the quality of the image (I like the image…do I really want to risk destroying the photo?), what to manipulate in the image (selective sections or entire image?) and how far to push the manipulation (do I break up the emulsion so that the white paste comes through or just lightly move the colors around the image..).

I could scan the photo before manipulation but that defeats the purpose of instant film. I don’t want a copy of my photo. I don’t want to have to “boot” anything up to see my image. And if I were to make a print from a scan, I don’t want to turn the photo over and see some time stamp from some processing machine. I want to feel the texture of the white border. I want to be able to turn the photo over and see the goop.

If I really like a photo, I might take another photo just to manipulate. That’s what I did for this photo. I would like to have this luxury for each shot, but my time zero stock is limited and so is my budget for buying more film.

I think the process of manipulating the image is what I enjoy more than taking the photo or even viewing the finished product. It’s analogous to painting in reverse…

Concentric stones at Rhyolite ghost town, near Death Valley, CA. Rotating mirror filter and local tone mapping added in Corel Paintshop. The original image/source is indeed a circle, but the mirror filter only shows 1/2 of the circle/image (mirrored.) Curiouser and curiouser.

I love this picture because it is a perfect example of how something so simple as a character meet and greet can be so magical for the children. Alice was quick to take the girls by the hands and began telling her stories. These are the things that make Disney special. How could anyone not smile at this kind of thing?

One of the things that I love about Disneyland that you’ll rarely find at Walt Disney World, is how the characters will spontaneously show up without notice or character handlers and just start their story telling and signing autographs and picture taking. …just another little piece of the puzzle that makes Disneyland outstanding and so very magical.

A little about this picture:

HDR Orton done in Dynamic Photo HDR to give it the “dreamy” effect. After that I imported to PSPX2, duplicated the layer, desaturated and brought the color layer to the top. Then rubbed away the background to show b&w. I did this because the background was distracting. I would have liked Olivia’s face (left) a touch more in the picture, but that was how I framed it. So to balance it out a little I cropped in from the right and down from the top a little, also cutting a little more of the busy background out.

Hope you like it!

Manipulated photo. First converted to black & white, then given a kind of copper coloring (instead of sepia).

There are times as a parent when you wish your hands where this big to control the way things are. Not just with your kids (and believe me, sometime you just want to pick them up ... and move them somewhere else; anywhere else), but anything -- to feel big, important, to have control. So, I just tried out this idea; not perfectly (or as successfully as I really wish), but something to get the creative juices flowing again ...
