I've seen some recent photos of the road construction mangling this scene so here is another frame from our epic August adventure.

One major goal of the trip was to catch the short two block stretch of street running on Norfolk Southern's Marion District main, the former Conrail Marion branch, originally a Big Four Route (NYC) line. To read some history of this line I recommend this excellent site:

sites.google.com/view/the-marion-branch/home

The 111 mile line diverges from the Chicago Line and runs due south intersecting every major east west route, consequently NS uses it to funnel traffic from Elkhart Yard and the former NYC main to their Chicago District (ex Nickel Plate main), their Huntington District (ex Wabash main)and their Frankfort District (also ex NKP Lake Erie and Western District). In addition it also crosses many other active and abandoned routes of other NS predecessor and competitors.

But I am woefully lacking in knowledge of the history or present day operations of midwestern rail lines so will leave the summary at that. I will be researching more, but I welcome any and all feedback.

Anyway, after not seeing anything in Warsaw on the way nort on Friday evening I was grateful to get a tip from a local fan on an area FB group who said two trains heading south would be leaving Elkhart after lunch on Sunday. So after wrapping up with the South Shore freight at Beverly Shores we headed south east back toward the Marion District. Arriving in Warsaw we had about a 30 min wait before the signal lit up green north of the CF&E diamond at MP 25.7. In short order train 143 (Elkhart to Chattanooga) came south followed 30 minutes later by train 19K (Elkhart to Decatur) seen here.

This was a now or never opportunity because in less than two weeks a major construction project is going to start (signs are already posted warning of the pending road closure) to reconfigure the track so that it will no longer be a two way street. The true street running with the rails in the pavement will disappear in favor of one way road traffic with the rails separated by curbing. This will completely change the look and feel of the two blocks of Hickory Street forever so I'm so glad this all came together for my first and last chance to shoot this scene.

The laundries of these great houses seem to be the latest part opened up to the public (kitchens having been the thing some years ago). Like kitchens, and since nearly all of us do our own cooking and washing, we can appreciate the hard labour that went into running the household. I expect these two mangles saw a lot of use - and as the lower one says proudly, 'It's all in the rubber'.

this old truck is mangled and not alone in this heap, there was another vehicle but no sure what it could have been......

As a kid I remember watching the "Roadrunner". For anyone under 30 reading this, it was a cartoon in which a hapless coyote, obsessed with one particular roadrunner, would use all kinds of weird contraptions, rockets and explosives trying to catch the bird. Every one of these things were made by ACME, and they would, without fail, backfire on him with hilarious ( I was 10 ) consequences. I'd always thought that ACME was a fictional company until I saw this. It turns out they're real, and they make mangles. I was wearing my surprised face when I took this shot.

Not entirely sure those were meant to be corn stalks, but for the sake of alliteration, just go with it!

Rhizophora mangle (Red mangrove / Mangle rojo)

Rhizophora mangle, a mangrove tree 5-10 m tall, is an important native species in coastal areas in tropical and subtropical America, with many environmental benefits, protecting coasts against storm and tidal damage and providing habitats needed for numerous marine and estuarine species.

The red mangrove is distributed in estuarine ecosystems throughout the tropics. Rhizophora mangle grows on aerial prop roots, which arch above the water level, giving stands of this tree the characteristic "mangrove" appearance.

R. mangle thickets provide nesting and hunting habitat for a diverse array of organisms, including fish, birds, and crocodiles.

In Guatemala, the mangrove ecosystem is distributed on the Pacific and Caribbean coast of the country, representing an area of 25,089 hectares.
