While cleaning-out some stuff, from when I was a kid, we found this little flashback from my youth. It even had some records in it; as in the 33 & 1/3 long playing records - Mickey Mouse Disco, Puff the Magic Dragon, etc...

In the early 1990's Radio Shack was trying to re-invent themselves & their image to the public. They wanted to streamline the shopping experience for the customer, making it easier to locate products in their stores, while calling attention to 'high value' merchandise. Gone were the old yellow or beige peg boards systems of the 1970's & 1980's. The new look would be a light gray background & blue trim, with new sleek product management systems. Long continuous shelving systems would make way for shorter, more manageable systems. High-profile products would be displayed on free-standing displays, in an effort to focus the customer's attention on our new & innovative product line. Items such as our new transportable cellular telephones & laptop computers, would be just some of the new items prominently displayed

It was a concept to be sure, and for a time, it did give the stores a fresh look. However, to use a phrase my grandmother once said, "Window-dressing alone is just a facade, if you don't take care of what real counts (behind the scenes)." She was right on the mark with that one. Radio Shack has gone through many iterations; some would even be considered an extreme makeover for retail, unfortunately they just seemed to be coming up short. At one time they had a niche in the Hobbyist, Electronics, & DIY market. Sadly, they shifted their interest in a direction, which lead to direct competition with the large retail giants like Best Buy, Target, Walmart, etc... Unfortunately, Radio Shack failed to realize that this was not the path, to a successfully future for them. Combine this with a chain that grew too big (+5000 stores at one time), some poorly trained sales staff, and products that were not competitively priced, and it spelled disaster. The Radio Shack of today is a shadow of its former self. Entire markets, which in years past had several successful stores now have one, if they're lucky.

The Greater Rockford Area had 7 Corporately-owned Stores at one time!

- Machesney Park Store (originally located in the Machesney Park Mall, later moved to the IL Rt. 173 corridor in front of Target, before closure)

- North Alpine Store (later moved to East Riverside Blvd near the defunct Eagle Grocery Store, before closure)

- South Alpine Store (originally located in the Alpine Village Shopping Mall, before closure)

- North Towne Mall Store (later moved to Walmart Shopping Center on West Riverside, before closure)

- East State Street Store (originally located west of Alpine Road, later moved east of Mulford Road in front of Target, before closure)

- Sandy Hollow Store (still in operation as of July of 2016)

- Cherryvale Mall Store (originally located on the upper level near Bergner's, before closure)

It’s hard to believe how things have changed so dramatically, for company that has seen over 90 years of being in business (founded in 1921!).

This is a photograph from the annual Ardagh Moydow Glen Community Games 5KM and 10 Mile road races, fun runs, walks and challenges which were held in the heritage village of Ardagh, Co. Longford, Ireland on Saturday 28th December 2019 at 13:00. This race has grown year on year since its first running a few years ago. This year seen one of the largest overall entries in the races.

We have an extensive set of photographs from the race start and the finish on our Flickr photostream set at

www.flickr.com/photos/peterm7/albums/72157712400793232

Timing and Event management was provided by Irish company PopupRaces - check their website at www.popuparces.ie

The 10 mile race takes in the local 'Ardagh Mountain' which is a 1 mile continuous climb starting at the 2 mile mark of the 10 mile race. There is, of course, then the reward of a long down-hill stretch after the summit. This forested hill or mountain was once a famous centre of pre-Christian religious worship and is believed to have been the home of a pre–christian diety named Midir (the God of the Underworld), and also a Prince of the "Tuatha De Dannan", the fairy people of Ireland. The hill or mountain itself is named after Brí, the daughter of Midhir and her doomed love, Leith who are reputed to be buried on the hill. The top of the hill offers impressive views of the landscape, particularly north to Longford town and towards the south. The remainder of the race is challenging but fair, with some much smaller and less steep hills in the race profile. Miles 3 - 7 benefit from some downhill as the race route travels around the base of the hills. The roads are predominantly rural roads with little traffic. There is a gradual climb in the final mile of the race which brings runners back into Ardagh village. The 10 mile race finishes in the same finish as the 5KM race. Water stops and adequate stewarding at junctions is provided.

The 5KM race takes a loop around the heritage village of Ardagh. This allows runners, walkers and joggers of all ability to take part over a more manageable distance. Overall this is a very well organised race with accurate courses, good marshalling and traffic control and excellent after race refreshments. The 10 mile race is one of the longest road races held during the Christmas period anywhere in Ireland and has appeal to runners who want to add a longer distance race to their festive calendar of running.

The weather at this year's race was almost perfect for running. The rain managed to stay away and there was only a breeze on certain exposed parts of the course. Indeed conditions could be described as mild with temperatures of 11C. In 2014 there was very frosty icy weather and in 2015 participants were given a very very windy day with heavy rain at the finish of both races. The 2016 and 2017 event seen very suitable weather for road racing in late December in Ireland.

Ardagh is probably County Longford's most picturesque village with many historical and architecturally important features. It is located about 6 miles from Longford town. There has been settlement in the area since around the 5th century.

Since adopting Jude, I’ve heard a LOT of people say, “He’s so beautiful! I want a Blue Bay Shepherd, too!”

Let me be perfectly clear here: No. You probably don’t.

Jude is good at walking politely on the leash, is exceptionally affectionate toward humans of all ages, loves Blackjack (my cat) like a brother, and plays well with a few other dogs, but there are a slue of issues Jude has which make him difficult to deal with, and he’s not the only BBS who exhibits these problems. Carefully reading owner testimonials has exposed that many of said issues are not unique.

Jude is an escape artist. He can unlock both front doors, has chewed through steel cables to open the back of my truck, and has bent the wire mesh on the goat pen to wiggle underneath it. I’ve now just discovered that he can also fit through the damned cat door.

His ability to escape from an array of different places has been both frustrating and fascinating. It also perfectly illustrates why I do not recommend the Blue Bay Shepherd (or any wolfdog) as a good companion animal for anyone without experience in training/living with large-breed ‘difficult’ dogs.

Jude may not have been bred as a working dog like Cabal, and his energy level is generally more manageable than Cabal’s is; but Jude is nevertheless very high-maintenance and cannot be left unattended unless he’s tied up or secured in the dog run - to which we have had to make several improvements because he’s been finding all the weak spots as fast as we can fix them.

He’s not the best when it comes to meeting new dogs, either, especially un-neutered males. He is perfectly okay with Cabal, fixed submissive males, and with prettymuch all female dogs, but I generally opt to decline when people ask if they can introduce their pup to Jude. He has never attacked another dog, and plays fabulously with those he deems likable, but it’s always a tense moment when an off-leash dog comes barreling up to us on the beach, as I never know how Jude will react.

Contrary to what I was initially told by his previous owners, Jude’s prey drive is indeed quite strong, and while he avoids the farm animals under my supervision, is not afraid to chase the goats and chickens when he thinks no one is watching. Even so, he is great with Blackjack, and other BBS owners seem to have been able to socialize their dogs to cats, as well. He apparently regards cats as weird micro-dogs, whereas all other small critters are chew toys.

On the topic of chew toys - Blue Bays are mouthy bastards. I discovered quite quickly that Jude is VERY mouthy, even at two years of age.

He’d done this funny thing before, where he would take my hand gently in his mouth and lead me around, and I thought it was quite amusing, until he started jumping on me to grab my hand back when I took it out of his mouth. This escalated to him grabbing my forearm quite firmly; he wasn’t trying to do damage - if he wanted to, he’d have no doubt snapped my bones like dry twigs - but it was enough to leave four matching bruises - two on each side of my arm - and large welts where his teeth had clamped down.

Thankfully, Cabal was there to reprimand Jude for this transgression: He grabbed Jude’s scruff and threw him to the ground, then stood over him and made a big show about sniffing Jude’s crotch. He let Jude up after Jude averted his gaze, and the two went about playing as if nothing had happened. But Jude remembered Cabal’s warning and hasn’t jumped up on me like that since. I still don’t know how that situation would have unfolded if not for Cabal’s interference.

With all this negativity out of the way, I want to assure you that Jude is still a wonderful companion for Andrew and myself, largely in part because I work from home and am able to spend more time with Jude than his previous owner did. And Andrew, who grew up raising a 110-pound St. Bernard/pitbull mix, is good at setting the ground rules for Jude when he decides to overstep his bounds. Jude seems to thrive now that he’s got some structure to follow.

Since adopting Jude, he’s made exceptional improvements in his behavior, but he is still a work-in-progress, and likely will need constant reinforcement in his training throughout his entire life.

This means that he will get better, yes, but we will never be able to let our guard down around Jude.

So no - aside from the fact that breeding designer dogs like BBSs is downright stupid, and buying from the breeder who creates them will only further support that stupidity, you really don’t want a Blue Bay Shepherd, especially if the reason you want one is because you simply think they’re pretty.

IDP's from Tikrit and Ramadi.

The refugee flow to the wealthy continent of Europe is just the tip of the iceberg. It's a minor crisis compared to the real refugee crisis hitting Iraq and Iraqi Kurdistan, where resources are not so plenty as in Europe. Belgium is not overwhelmed by a flood of refugees like Kurdistan. Many internal Iraqi refugees from areas which have been taken by IS flee to the Kurdish region in northern Iraq. Most refugees remain in the region, and within the sphere of influence of the conflicts of yesterday, today and tomorrow. Browse through these photos by photographer Baram Maaruf and you might get a better understanding of the scope of the "crisis" in Europe: limited and perfectly manageable. It's a not a "refugee crisis", but a crisis of "political will".

ARBAT IDP CAMP

Arbat Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camp is located outside the city of Sulaymaniyah in Iraq's Kurdistan Region. It is one of the most overcrowded refugee camps in Iraq. The camp was supposed to house 800 displaced Iraqi families, but now there are more than 2000 families (23.000 people). In each tent there are several families. It was established for Syrian refugees as a transit camp, but it turned into a camp for internally displaced Iraqi refugees. As the crisis in Iraq enters its second year with no political or military solution in sight, the government and aid groups are being forced to seek longer-term humanitarian solutions for the more than three million displaced by violence across the country.

ASHTI CAMP

It’s a short drive to a new camp location just five km away: Ashti Camp. UNHCR and its partners began to move residents to better-equipped facilities in June 2015. Ashti camp, was recently completed and will eventually accommodate some 1000 families who will be moved from Arbat Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp. They are displaced Iraqis sheltering in Iraq's Kurdistan Region. It looks like the foundation of a new village. Instead of pitched upon packed earth, tents here rest on poured concrete foundations. Plumbing is underground and electric wiring runs along poles that neatly follow the camp's grid layout.

ARBAT PERMANENT CAMP

The third refugee camp is a permanent camp for 6000 Syrian refugees, mainly Kurds from Kobani and Qamishlo. It looks like a village with paved roads, electricity wires, shops, little brick houses. Even though the whole “village” looks miserable, it is much “better” compared to Arbat Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp.

After World War I, the British military decided to replace the big, powerful Webley .455 caliber service revolvers with a lighter weight weapon with milder recoil. While the .455 had very good stopping power, the smaller .38-200 was more manageable by lesser - trained personnel. The British firm of Webley & Scott submitted their Mk. IV revolver. Rather than adopting the Webley, the design was given to the Royal Small Arms factory at Enfield, who came up with the No. 2 Mk. 1 Revolver, quite similar to the Webley. Of course, Webley & Scott sued and was awarded the sum of £1250. When World War II broke out, Enfield was unable to meet the demand and the Webley Mk. IV's were used alongside the Enfields.

The No. 2 Mk. 1* was a spurless hammer, double action only version introduced in 1938. The revolver seen here is marked 1934 and so was updated at some point.

I went with just ONE large area for kids to post goals in 5th grade instead of a page under each letter since MOST of them had comprehension goals anyway. Also, I'm listing strategies as posters above my white board, so no individual little sentence strips with strategies listed under each. This is more manageable for me and practical in 5th grade.

This is one of the paintings in the fantastic Collection Jean Walter et Claude Guillaume, in the Musée de l'Orangerie in the Jardin des Tuileries in Paris. To protect the paintings the rooms are lit by dim yellow lighting, for which I tried to compensate in taking these pictures without flash (the museum doesn't allow flash photography). However, I don't think the images here are quite the true colours in the paintings, though they do give some idea of the magnificence of the paintings. It's really well worth visiting the Musée de l'Orangerie, which is a very manageable size to see in its entirety in an afternoon. Then you'd get to see these fantastic Impressionist paintings in their true glory.

Picacho Peak is a premiere destination for anyone traveling down I-10. With a unique look and massive size, its presence is hard to ignore. Whether you are coming from the Phoenix or Tucson area, there is clear signage directing to the Park's entrance making for easy navigation. Here are a number of trails in the Park, including two ways to get to Picacho Peak. The most common one is Hunter 's Trail. It's a 4 mile out and back trail that takes you straight up to the Peak. Leading up to the mountain you ascend up a couple hundred feet via switchbacks before you reach the saddle. Take a moment to rest and enjoy the views before descending down about 230 feet. Though cables are present during the switchback portion of the hike the descend down is when the cables are truly introduced into the hike. The trail will go along the side of the Peak and will come to a trail intersection with Sunset Vista Trail. Soon from this point the ascend up begins again, this time using the cables! Gloves are recommended, but not required. Don't let the idea of using cables to climb up steer you away - it's very doable and manageable.

The back platform at a rather damp Ely on 19th December 1987 taking us back to the last Winter of loco haulage on the cross country services to the Midlands.

31446 has just arrived with 1M70 09.28 Ipswich - Birmingham New Street. The loco was noted for its sluggishness and had arrived in East Anglia the previous evening on the 'boat train' from Manchester or Preston ( I think it was ) to Harwich - quite a taxing load for 31446 on a full rake of air cons, normally a Class 47 duty. The loco then took the empties to Norwich Crown Point before heading back down to Ipswich on the ecs of the train shown here, a more manageable load five.

Nevertheless, next day 31446 was shown as being on Ipswich with 'low power' due to a load regulator fault. It was back out on the Monday though !

Note the locomotive number scrawled between the central footholds and lack of blue star symbols, they appear to have worn away.

I don't know for how many years now I've gone to Renegade Craft Fair in Brooklyn. Probably about 7. But it is always a ton of fun. This year they had a mini market this weekend and are having the big fair in September. I met up with some friends for the little market and found it much more manageable (both walking-wise and budge-wise, not to mention the fact that it was indoors and Renegade has certainly been QUITE hot in years past -- especially when in that McCarren Park Pool). I found quite a haul of little goodies. And even found a table of remnants from Reprodepot (aren't they out of business?) like I did the first year I went.

Even the tiny Blue Tit makes use of the berries. I think it's likely that it uses berries that are rotting or have already been partially opened by bigger birds.

This puts a whole new slant on the term 'pecking order' whereby some small birds may actually benefit from larger species making their food more manageable by reducing its size and malleability.

I noticed that Fieldfares, Bullfinches, Blackbirds and the Blackcap were all foraging on the ground for fallen berries which are likely to be already softened. Out wintering Scandinavian thrushes also benefit from fallen fruit when they find on returning to their breeding haunts a ready source of food on ground that has been covered all winter by snow.

Last night in the back garden

Continuing the theme of smaller content but hopefully more regular and manageable posts.

Last night I ran the trap again as you just never know what might fly into it given that we are in peak migrant season currently.

A new garden species was the highlight, a tiny Phyllonorycter ulmifoliella sitting on the collar of the trap which was swiftly potted up and photographed, a species that mines the leaves of Birch.

Old Lady was also a nice surprise, I don't see many of these and the sheer size of them against all of the other moths in the trap is breath-taking.

A garden second record of Argyresthia semitestacella was most welcome, very very similar to albistia but the general jizz of the moth is a longer more slender species with less contrast between the two colours but not always the case.

Also a really dark Square-spot Rustic was worthy of a photo and a Flounced Rustic re-appeared after a few weeks absense.

Kingston was the first bus garage kit I produced; six years ago now. To produce a manageable model, I reduced many dimensions; notable here is the lack of depth.

After a long hike in Fay Canyon and after checking into my next hotel room with a little lunch in between, I drove out to Cathedral Rock and one of the better Vortex spots if you ask me. It was Thanksgiving weekend, so it was packed with hikers and such. No matter as I was determined to see the top and beyond if I had to crawl. I had no climbing gear but it proved manageable even with a big heavy bag of camera gear. I would not recommend it for people who have mobility issues. I weaved my way through the masses of people on the trail to reach the top and was rewarded with a vantage point that was breathtaking. I left no path un-investigated and now I know where to set up when I return with my 4x5 camera next time. The crack climbing is a little intense but any one with some ambition could do it. The rocks glowed in the mid day sun and I was feeling the energy for real. After some pictures and a drink I hiked back down and stopped several more times to shoot with different cameras. I have to admit that by the time I got back down, my legs were a little shaky from all the hiking today. It was time to relax with a hot shower and a beer. I am starting to figure out my way around Sedona and it feels less like a vacation and more like home.

Here is a closeup of the glass over the chines. I was worried about the glass making it over the curves in the chines - However, the Epoxy and milled fiber fillet seems to have reduced the curve to be quite manageable!

The ionic resonance pick, or IRP, is a piece of equipment used by M-Tron miners to get to those finicky places a full sized Particle Ionizer cannot access.

While not as efficient as a particle ionizer when it comes to effectively separating crystal from rock, it does break rock down to a more manageable size to be refined elsewhere.
