Photos from the Pequot Museum's Bow Making Workshop on the Farmstead. Manuel Lizarralde, associate professor at Connecticut College, taught kids and adults the art of crafting hunting and target bows. Manuel has made more than 400 bows over the last 25 years and is a skilled teacher of fledgling bowyers.

From the front or overhead, egrets like this lovely, Great Egret in Reed Canal Park appear exceptionally lean and sleek. The way they move is amazing, carefully stepping in such a way that the fish aren't frightened off, and then they strike! While they move dreadfully slow while searching for and stalking their prey, when they lock onto it, they move with the speed of any predator. They are very good at what they do!

Carlie Archer, 16, springs out of the water while flipping her hair back, and for a fraction of a second, creating circular halo around her. Carlie is an Air Cadet from Orillia and was enjoying an end of the year BBQ at the Pautch homestead in Orillia on hot, hazy Saturday evening in June.

This was kind of a test. If you carry a camera into a restaurant (or practically anywhere non-touristy) you'll attract attention. Hold up a telephone in front of the food and nobody looks twice.

I'm slowly adjusting to this world...

Summer 2018 2nd leg: Visiting family and friends in Massachusetts, USA.

June 4: No trip to the Home Planet would be complete without stuffing ourselves at "The Big China". Normally we're not fans of the buffet, this one's a family tradition.

Cultural performers in the heart of ancient Pingyao.

Pingyao is considered one of China's best-preserved ancient walled towns. (From my limited travels around China, I wholeheartedly concur.)

Pingyao's history goes back about 2,700 years. Located about 90 km (55 miles) south of Taiyuan in Shanxi (山西) province, modern-day Pingyao has around 450,000 residents. The ancient town, is enclosed within a stone wall, 10 meters (31 feet) high and slightly more than 6 kilometers (3.6 miles) with 6 gates: north, lower east, upper east, south, upper west, and lower west, that was built in 1370.

Within these walls live 50,000 people. Also to be found are a number of religious institutions including temples - the Confucian temple with the oldest surviving building in Pingyao (Dacheng Hall from 1163 A.D.), the Taoist City God Temple, Taoist Qingxu Guan (temple), and a Catholic church, among others.

Besides the various religious sites, there are museums to the banking industry such as the Rishengchang Museum. (The first draft bank in China was located here in Pingyao), a few art museums, and -- centrally located -- a city tower on Nan Dajie.

Pingyao also has many guesthouses (I chose Harmony Guesthouse on Nan Dajie near the south gate and highly recommend it to anyone who goes to Pingyao), restaurants (western and local Pingyao cuisine), teahouses, bars, massage parlors, and souvenir shops.

By day, the panoramic view of Pingyao is slightly reminiscent of the imperial city scenes at the beginning of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (perhaps with a creative imagination). As evening comes, the red lanterns begin to dominate the landscape. Alleys, doorways, the main roads, and courtyards all find themselves awash in a red glow.

In short, Pingyao has plenty to offer by day or night. These images are just a small reflection, through my eyes, of Pingyao's charms.

My little son (the chief of the firefighters) told me that it is mandatory to make this photo... so what should I do? In case your chief telling you to do something, you have to follow... ;)

And here is the result: www.flickr.com/photos/joerg-bischoff/4323582716/

They (HBO) filmed scenes for a movie right outside my apartment . This lighting crane was set-up in the church parking lot on the north side of my building . The action was centered around the house almost dead center , there were also shots looking down my street (to the right) . The 1960's was the time frame for this movie, about Muhammad Ali's fight to be a conscientious objector . The site where I live was chosen because it looked a bit like Georgetown in Washington DC.

This crane was used to light up surrounding buildings, the street, and cars, includng my building, which was right behind me when I took this panorama...

One of the most interesting things about this filming, which started around 2pm, was that they contacted car clubs in the area and rounded up a number of classic cars (and a really cool period taxi0 to appear in the background of the shots . Many of the cars were later than the time period depicted, but they were all 1960's cars . It was like a classic car show . I posted some images of these cars etc. in the following images..
