I love seeing the bottles of golden maple syrup on the counter after all the boiling! We'll be enjoying these throughout the year. Total syrup for the year was a little over 2 gallons.

Image made with my Make your own kaleidosope toy, which can make kaleidoscopic images from photos (including your Flickr photos).

I've been working on adding a 'save as JPEG' feature to this tool, and this is the result of one of the first tests with it.

Since the feature can't be accomplished in Flash, I added a server-side component. When you press the JPEG button, the Flash interface loads a PHP webpage which invokes a Perl script that reconstructs the image using ImageMagick.

You can get a cool effect if you use the resulting JPEG image as raw material for a new kaleidoscope (making a feedback fractal kaleidoscope)....

I was up late filling the pantry with all kinds of goodies for winter. I feel like it’s a better use of energy when I can a bunch of things in one evening. Then I only have to fire up the canner every so often. I’m not canning as much this year since I’m trying to focus more on growing throughout the winter and I grew a lot potatoes, sweet potatoes, and squash that don’t need preserved.

I ended up with: 28 pints of crushed tomatoes, 5 quarts of sauerkraut, 5 pints of bread & butter pickles, and 3 pints of fire roasted red peppers. I also started a batch of watermelon rind pickles, we’ll see how those turn out. I think all I have left to can is some tomato soup, ketchup, and perhaps a batch of green tomato pickles.

"To 'put by' is an old deep-country way of saying to 'save something you don't have to use now, against the time when you'll need it.' "Putting food by is the antidote for running scared".

Scout Books for weddings. What a great idea! We teamed up with the fabulous ladies at Ice Cream Social to help us design and create some beautiful little notebooks. They turned out great and are just one example of how versatile and personal Scout Books can be for that special day! They would make adorable favors, gifts for your out of town guests, or look great as unique invitations! We are so excited about all the possibilities and you will be too!

Every day this week, we'll share a new Scout Book filled with creative goodness from the members of Chicago collective The Post Family. Awesome!

Chad Kouri loves paper. I might go so far as to call him The Collage Master. His work incorporates vintage ephemera, letterpress printing and found objects, which makes for a body of work that is at once tangible, nostalgic and visually spectacular. Find a bursting portfolio of Chad's work online at Long Live Analog, much of which lives happily in the interesting realm of digital-meets-analog. Geek out over projects such as his papercut desktop wallpaper for Kistune Noir, or his iPhone cases wrapped in digitized artwork of hand-cut vintage graph paper. Whoa.

Chad's Scout Book boasts a fantastic touch-and-feel, cut-and-paste quality. It makes me want to touch my computer screen.

As Mr Chiots and I transitioned from buying packaged food, we needed an alternative to the granola bar. When we’re out filming, we need to have snacks that give us energy and keep us from getting too hungry. I discovered the recipe for these healthy cookies several years ago and have been making them ever since. These little cookies make wonderful on the go snacks. They’re packed full of all kinds of healthy ingredients and you can be at peace knowing there’s no high fructose corn syrup, soy protein isolate, artificial colors, flavors, partially hydrogenated fats, GMO ingredients or any of that scary stuff.

I got some kefir grains from the farm where I get my raw milk. I've been making kefir for the pets and for us to drink. I make it in the fridge instead of on the counter so I don't have to feed the grains quite as often. Such an amazing process, the whole living grains that multiply thing is quite interesting! I love that it's easier than yogurt.

Sara Linter is a Minneapolis-based graphic designer and the proprietress of Too Many Suitors, a creative goods business. We welcome Sara's Parliament Scout Books as the newest edition to our Friends collection: these snazzy notebooks are now available in the shop! These pocket-sized beauties boast two exterior ink colors and grid interiors.

Sara took some time to talk with us about her creative practice.

Oh, and why "Parliament," you wonder? It's the term for a group of owls.

I posted my recipe for Whole Grain Stout Mustard on the Your Day blog at Ethel so head on over there. If you remember I talked about my love of condiments one Friday. Of all the condiments mustard is my favorite. I love a good hearty whole grain mustard, but they can be pricey in the store. Making your own is quick and easy.

I get my organic mustard seeds from Mountain Rose Herbs in case you're wondering, they're inexpensive and you can buy in bulk. People will certainly be impressed when you take homemade mustard to the next cookout you attend.

Thanksgiving dinner is rounded out perfectly with some white light fluffy dinner rolls. The dough is always a dream, so smooth and silky, unlike the 100% whole grain that I make most of the time.

I made some fresh flour tortillas on Tuesday, two batches, some all white and some whole grain. I used this recipe, but I added organic vegetable shortening instead of oil to the recipe (and I added more than the recipe called for). Making homemade tortillas isn't new for me, I've been making them for years. We don't eat them very often though, often opting for sourdough bread. I'm thinking of experimenting with making overnight sourdough tortillas, I think I could make some them healthier and even tastier this way.

Last week we sent a bunch of Scout Books to SXSW in Texas with @rohdesign and @austinkleon for their Visual Notetaking 101 Panel.

These guys take awesome notes, and they designed this pocket notebook to offer you a chance to create beautifully illustrated notes, too. The cover features illustration exercises for better notetaking.

Count yourself lucky if you were at the panel and received one of these! They ran out right away! Collectors item.

Roycraft pack frame I built using Rock Mountain maple. I used 550 cord for the tie-downs and they can be repurposed for many uses. I decided to used webbing for the straps instead of rope as I think the webbing is stronger and lighter for its use.

This is my tin can cheese press in action making salted pressed ricotta. Right now 10 lbs of weight.

Ina Weise is a young lady with quite a bit of creative experience under her belt. She is currently an intern at The Post Family, but before calling Chicago home, she studied in Austria, Poland, and her native Germany. Her command of geometric shapes is astonishing, and her work spans mediums from textiles to printmaking to apparel to installation. Her installation at the Post Family's Family Room Gallery will close this week; if you're in Chicago, stop in to celebrate the closing of her show The Following of One Thing After Another.

Ina explores circles in this pocket notebook, incorporating pen, pencil, cut paper, collage, xerox transfer and woven paper.
