Luke Ramsey is awesome. He creates beautiful, intricate pieces of artwork that include zines, murals, paintings and prints. He also runs Islands Fold, an independent publisher and artist residency in B.C., Canada.
We ran into Luke last summer at the Portland Zine Symposium, and saw him sketching in a Scout Book! Quickly gave him another, and within weeks he had filled it up and sent us images. At long last, here is what the fantastic Luke Ramsey did with the 32 grid pages of a Scout Book.
Awesome! Thanks, Luke.

Fun, funky work from Amy Martino! Amy is a NYC based graphic designer and illustrator, and her bright, textured work has us swooning.
She dressed this Scout Book up in ways we've never seen! Hot pink and neon green paper? Yes, please.
Oh yes, and metallic gold. Don't forget about the metallic gold.
Find more at Yellow Bird Machine, Amy's online illustration portfolio.
Every day this week, we’ll share a new Scout Book filled with creative goodness from the members of Chicago collaborative The Post Family. Awesome!

We very excited that he took the time to fill this Scout Book so expertly with collage work. We even see some letterpress bits and pieces in there!
This series is inspired by and dedicated to Sue Moore (About AlpenaMi at www.flickr.com/people/alpenami/) and all Flickr friends here.

Loving this girl!
I was not too confident about her lip style when ordering, but I was surprised to find what a cool look it is. Also cool that she is so very different from every other Momoko I have.
I made this angel as a daily challenge in a camera group. I've added a bit of gold glitter and this origami angel 😇 looks perfect

I finally cracked open my first farmhouse cheddar that I made 3 months ago (used the recipe from Home Cheese Making: Recipes for 75 Delicious Cheeses). I used beeswax from our hive to wax it and raw milk from the local farm for the cheese. I don't have a cheese press so I used a bowl on top of a plate and workout weights (hence the bowl shaped cheese). It's quite sharp and dry, which I really like. Next time I'm going to try to cut the curds a differently so the cheese is a little softer, although I like my cheese sharp and dry so maybe not. The wax was too thin, but I didn't have enough to make it thicker, I had to pour it over the cheese because I didn't have enough to dip. Hopefully next year I will.
llustrator and designer, Ben Weiland, made these great Scout Books for 2011. They feature some of his great illustration work and a nice little spot on the back to be filled in with a note and the name of some lucky recipient. Scout Books make such great gifts, fun to give and receive.

When you grow you own strawberries they’re so much better than what you get at the store, you don’t want to overpower them with too much sugar. I make homemade shortcake with real butter, whole grain flour, crystallized ginger and just a small amount of sugar. This lets the sweetness and flavor of homegrown sun ripened strawberries be the star of the meal. The shortcakes are cooked until crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. When cooled we crumble them in a bowl, top with strawberries macerated with maple syrup and a dash of vanilla. Then we top it all off with some raw milk.

I think this is one of the most beautiful loaves I've ever baked, great oven spring. Can't wait to slice it up and slather it with butter.
These 9 kaleidoscope images were created online with jbum's new online toy, an application to create kaleidoscope images from an uploaded photo. I used my favorite camera-toss style photo of Christmas lights from the series posted on Sunday this week. See this link for the original photo used. And then see this link to the online application at KrazyDad.com and this link to the Mini-Kaleid group pool on flickr. Thanks to Brenda Anderson for sharing her image and her links to this technique. And, as always, a big THANK YOU to jbum!
Found in an old folder after a sort out, this make your own Little Gem was produced by GM Buses in the late 1980s. I used to grab a handfull everytime I got a chance (The Saver Sales shop was a favourite place for them) and pretty soon had a large fleet of them in my bedroom.
I challenge everyone to download, print and build one. Take its photo and if theres enough we'll start a new Flickr group :-)

If we didn't already live in Portland, we're positive these Travel Portland Scout Books would make us want to visit. The talented Amy Ruppel created this two-toned illustrative representation of our fair city: big deer statues, Mt. Hood, evergreen trees galore.
Lovely.
I've blogged about my home canned tomato soup many times. It's one of my most popular posts, people are always writing asking the recipe and telling me how much they love the soup. It's one of the few things I can every year without fail. The first year I canned only 30 pints of it and it was gone way too soon. Last year I did 31 quarts and 7 pints and we only have 2 quarts left.
I use an old Squeezo to make my soup, this one was handed down to me by my mom. It's the one we used for applesauce & tomatoes growing up. It's a relic but still works great, and I love that it doesn't have any plastic parts. I love pulling it out, I even use the same block of wood on the counter that we used growing up.

All derived from my ONE original artwork made of egg shells called Egg Shell Garden Mosaic. I used a toy at the krazydad site for making kaleidoscopes out of any jpg posted on the web. I used my Flickr photo jpg url from under all sizes to make all these variations. Such fun and a way to see design possiblilities for future art stuff!

It is a free program that is easy to use.

(7) Go to file ... click on Save As ...Name it and save it
and then upload as normal to Flickr.
Here are a few groups you can add them to after you upload them to Flickr.

I was up late filling the pantry with all kinds of goodies for winter. I feel like it’s a better use of energy when I can a bunch of things in one evening. Then I only have to fire up the canner every so often. I’m not canning as much this year since I’m trying to focus more on growing throughout the winter and I grew a lot potatoes, sweet potatoes, and squash that don’t need preserved.
I ended up with: 28 pints of crushed tomatoes, 5 quarts of sauerkraut, 5 pints of bread & butter pickles, and 3 pints of fire roasted red peppers. I also started a batch of watermelon rind pickles, we’ll see how those turn out. I think all I have left to can is some tomato soup, ketchup, and perhaps a batch of green tomato pickles.

Take vodka, infuse for a week with organic strawberries, enjoy.
Mine is still brewing so I haven't hit the "enjoy" part yet.
I'm quite excited, I got a new Grain Mill and I also just received my copy of Peter Reinhart's Whole Grain Breads: New Techniques, Extraordinary Flavor. I made the basic bread yesterday and was very impressed with the texture and flavor of the bread. I have never been able to get the right level of gluten development with my 100% whole grain bread to get the kind of crumb I wanted. Yesterday my dough passed the windowpane test perfectly and it baked up into the most beautiful loaf of 100% whole grain sourdough sandwich bread!
Flyleaf Creative is a creative communication, branding and design company who works closely with arts and corporate clients. They recently printed two sets of Scout Books to be packaged together as a special New Year's gift and given to those they work with. One book features a fly while the other features leaves – a cute illustrative play on their company's name. What lucky folks to receive these books this New Year!
These Scout Books are HOT!
Mt. Hood Community College’s Integrated Media Program recently had it’s yearly Portfolio Show featuring the work of 18 graphic design students and 12 digital photography students of the class of 2010. They handed these Scout Books out to more than 500 attendees of the show and encouraged them all to vote on their favorite portfolio. The book was also used to take notes on each participant and served as a great take-away.
