A Flickr friend recently posted some before-and-after images on her stream. She is immensely talented, and it was interesting and reassuring to see some of her stuff more or less out of the camera, before conversion into the immaculate images she posts in the normal course of things.
I had been thinking about the kind of work I put into photos, taking the mechanical view of what the camera sees and wrestling it into something a little more like what comes to the eye. For me, at least at this point, a picture is a personal version of the world beyond - a mix of unadorned photography and wash-and-rinse painting. The balance, and you can see some of my struggling here, is between clarity and color on the one hand, and native detail on the other.
I don't think I'll do this often. It's kind of like taking off my pants in public, only with much less butt. Also, I'm a Kludge-style Photoshopper, by which I mean I don't really know how to use the thing, so if something doesn't fit the way I want I mostly just clang on it until it's close enough. So I'm not sure how much value there might be in looking at the pre and the post. Still, here's a glimpse at one recent posting: the finished Dream Deferred, shot last summer through the dirty window of a Jersey Transit commuter train, is here.

Actually, I think the foundation is too dark! All this time, I was wearing NC15 because NW looks orange on me. Well, here I have on NW15 and it ended up looking really dark and orange. Weird! You can't really tell in this photo though.
Here is what was used for my makeover:
NW15 Studio Fix Fluid
MSF Natural (I assume NW15?)
Poisey blushcreme.
Strut eyebrows.
Bat Black CCB.
Greasepaint stick.
Mylar eyeshadow.
Young Punk.
Cinderfella.
two paintpots (didn't catch the names).
Snob lipstick.
Blackfire glimmergloss.
I also tried on Night Violet mattene lipstick, which didn't look horrible on me. It's just dark and not something I'd wear that much in my lifetime... probably only to concerts, which I go to about twice a year. ha.
