My 'ticket' to Rockall. The ship was raising funds for a charity in Plymouth and five tickets were raffled off at £1 each. My name did not come out of the Chief Officer's hat but two lucky travelers were unable to go so their tickets were auctioned. My ticket eventually cost around £70 if I remember rightly, following a sealed bid auction which I won with a bit of collusion with the Chief Officer (thanks Richard).

Holy Trinity Goodramgate is one of Yorks many medieval churches now surplus to requirements for worship, but instead maintained by the Churches Conservation Trust by virtue of the importance of its fittings and glass.
The church sits concealed from the street, accessed by an easily missed alley between shops and set in a leafy churchyard that is a haven of peace from the buzz of the city. Its appearance suggests a church left alone by the Victorians, and its interior confirms this beyond any doubt.
The post-Reformation furnishings are the first features one notices in the somewhat gloomy interior, with box pews all around and a superb 15th century east window beyond complete with most of its original glass.
All the spaces seem to be unevenly shaped, no straight lines, everything clearly ancient and interesting as opposed to the polished, mechanical finish one can find in more restored churches. There are further elements of medieval glass in other windows, some of which is of earlier 14th century date, such as the heraldic glass in the aisle traceries.
Holy Trinity is normally kept open for visitors and does seem to be a well visited church.

Beginning and seasoned gardeners joined Alameda County Master Gardeners (acmg.ucanr.edu/ ) for an informative gardening workshop at the Hayward Public Library. Master Gardener Carol Vander Meulen reviewed the most important things gardeners can do to care for and maintain their citrus trees. She also provided tips about the most common pests and diseases that are attracted to citrus. Audience members brought questions about the problems they are having with their citrus trees.
The Alameda County Master Gardener Program volunteers are trained agents of the University of California, through the University of California Cooperative Extension. They extend research-based knowledge and information on home gardening issues to the residents of Alameda County. Contact the ACMGP with your gardening questions by calling 510-639-1371 or emailing mgalameda@ucdavis.edu. Include (1) your name, phone number and city; (2) Problem description - name of plant if applicable, when the problem began, cultural history such as watering, fertilizing, pruning, pesticides, etc.; and (3) Photographs of the problem, if possible.

In this session, Rajeev Borborah, WebMD Sr. Director of Engineering and Matt Wilson, WebMD Director of Web Operations, will highlight the growing role of NoSQL at the company. With over 160 applications behind WebMD properties, the engineering and operations teams utilize all types of backends – Oracle, MySQL, MSSQL, MongoDB, and Couchbase to name just a few. These applications read and write data to caches, relational databases, key / value stores, and document databases. In order to support its growing operations, while maintaining operational flexibility and ease of use, the WebMD team is broadening its use of NoSQL. This session will focus on the NoSQL caching and key / value storage implementation behind a few of the WebMD applications: Physician Finder, Symptom Checker and WebMD Runtime. Rajeev and Matt will discuss the NoSQL architecture, including ramp up, benefits, and roadmap.

Description: Adults have snowy, all-white plumage, and remarkably long necks (as long as their bodies) held outthrust during flight, but erect while swimming. Wingspan in the male is 2.4 m (8 ft), compared with 1.8 m (6 ft) for the female. Body length 140-160 cm (56-62 in) for adult males, with adult females 140-150 cm (55-58 in). Body weights vary from 9.5-17.2 kg (21-38 lbs), with an average of 12.7 kb (28 lbs) for the males and 10.3 kg (22.6 lbs) for the females.
Range and Habitat: After many years of protection, the species is still confined to small, isolated areas in Alaska, British Columbia, Alberta, Wyoming and Montana. The trumpeter has been re-introduced into Minnesota and Wisconsin. Trumpeters inhabit shallow, sheltered and preferably fresh waters.
Habits and Adaptations: Courtship is slow and displays have great significance. Swans usually mate for life. Unlike most other waterfowl, both sexes participate in building the nest. A mated pair will vigorously defend the mating, nesting and cygnet feeding grounds. Females usually begin their wing molt from 1-3 weeks before the eggs hatch, while the males of breeding pairs usually begin to molt before hatching also, although some molt afterwards. Most communication is through visual displays. Waterfowl have monocular vision - each eye is used independently for lateral views.
Diet: A variety of marsh and aquatic freshwater plants compose the bulk of the food consumed.
Breeding and Maturation: In Alaska, spring arrival is in late March or April. Egg laying normally commences in late April or early May and is completed in mid-May with a normal clutch size of 4-5 eggs. Both parents attend the nest but only the female incubates. Incubation period varies from 33-37 days. Hatching requires about 2 days. The cygnet uses a thorn-like projection on the tip of the upper mandible - the egg tooth - to break through the shell. Cygnets are closely attended by both parents until the cygnets reach flight age.
Miscellaneous: Today the trumpeter is legally protected throughout the entire year, and it was removed from the list of endangered species only a few years ago. Successful establishment of breeding populations in several western refuges suggest that at least remnant populations of trumpeters can be maintained in these areas where there is protection and available habitat.
in one frenetic two hour session on the car park roof at Memphis airport I took more than 200 shots of more than 130 departing FedEx wide body jets. Parallel runways allow simultaneous departure of jets at 30 second intervals on the two northerly runways. Flights to the West coast and Asia use the left hand strip whilst those for Europe and the East Coast use the right hand strip. With more than 6 visible MD-11s in the air at one time and with queues of 5-6 heavy FedEx aircraft on each departure taxiway throughput the late afternoon, this has to be one of the aircraft photting highlights of my life, it's totally mental, incredibly loud, smells of Jet A1 all the time and is totally, unbelievably awesome! And they do it every day of the week.......
