Once in a while a photo captures the right conditions to offer the semblance of 3 dimensions causing the key subject to come out at the viewer. It seemed to us to be the case for the beak and head with this photo. Red advances whereas blue recedes, sharp focus and edges advance whereas blurred and vague edges recede, and shadows can enhance the affect also. Of course when desired the pros can do it all in Photoshop.

Don Quixote an impoverished nobleman who read way to much of honorable knight novels and therefore out for the world to maintain the novels ideals. Preload on the novels of chivalry, he sees why not the world for what it is and rides off on his old stallion Rosinante, with his squire, peasant Sancho Panza on donkey Rucio, with the objective to demonstrate chivalry so that he can win the love of his beloved Dulcinea ( from the Spanish word for 'sweet'). Dulcinea is the name Don Quixote imagined that she wears; Her real name is Aldonza. This is a pun; an old Spanish saying goes "We have no other so well, we Aldonza," which jokingly suggest that she is elected to the lady because no one else is getting.

Korestia is a historic region of Western Macedonia in Greece. It’s a cluster of mountain villages (Ano and Kato Kranionas, Halara, Ano and Kato Melas, Makrochori, Mavrokampos, Agios Antonios, Gavros) exhibiting strong architectural and cultural interest. The traditional architecture of the villages is great for the region of Western Macedonia. Old houses are constructed with handmade bricks with red clay and straw, giving a reddish color to the landscape. The construction of the houses was maintained until the mid-20th century and then abandoned.

wasp on a daisy

Wasps have a great need for carbohydrates (sugars). To this end, they take in nectar from flowers, honeydew (the sugary, liquid secretion of aphids), the pulp and juice of ripe fruits (including pears and plums). The menu also includes sweet foods and drinks.

Wasps need proteins to maintain their own body, but especially to feed the larvae. They get it by catching and eating other insects. These can be all kinds of flies and mosquitoes, but also adult harvestmen, cicadas and their larvae, hairless or slightly hairy caterpillars, the larvae of sawflies, sawflies, honey bees and spiders.

A population of 400 wasps can bring as many as 3,000 captured prey to the nest per day!et

Kudu, also known as the Greater Kudu (Tragelaphus strepsiceros), is a magnificent antelope species found in various parts of sub-Saharan Africa. It is a large and majestic animal, renowned for its unique and striking appearance.

Physical Characteristics:

The Kudu is one of the largest antelope species, with males, known as bulls, weighing up to 600 kg (1,300 lbs) and standing around 1.5 to 1.7 meters (5 to 5.5 feet) tall at the shoulder. Females, known as cows, are smaller and lighter.

Both males and females have long, spiral-shaped horns. The horns can grow up to 1.8 meters (6 feet) in length in males, while in females, they are shorter and slimmer.

Appearance:

Kudus have a beautiful coat with distinctive white stripes along their sides. These stripes are believed to act as a form of camouflage in their woodland habitats, helping them blend in among dappled sunlight and shadow.

The coat coloration varies, but they are generally reddish-brown with a tinge of blue-grey in some areas. The undersides are usually pale.

Habitat and Behavior:

Kudus are found in a range of habitats, including woodlands, savannas, and dense bush areas. They are adaptable animals but prefer regions with enough vegetation for cover.

These antelopes are mainly browsers, feeding on leaves, fruits, and shoots. They have the ability to reach high branches to access food that other herbivores might not reach.

Kudus are predominantly nocturnal, which means they are most active during the night, helping them avoid predators and the heat of the day.

Males are typically solitary or found in small bachelor groups, while females form small herds, often accompanied by one dominant male.

Conservation Status:

The Kudu population is generally considered stable, but some local populations face threats due to habitat loss and hunting for their meat, hides, and horns.

Conservation efforts focus on preserving their natural habitats, implementing anti-poaching measures, and promoting responsible tourism to protect this iconic African species.

Kudus are not only remarkable creatures for their physical beauty but also for their role in maintaining the ecological balance of their habitats. As such, efforts to safeguard their existence are crucial for the overall health of Africa's biodiversity.

Old houses always have vibes. This one was particularly interesting. It is maintained beautifully, but has some rather strange vibes coming off of it is in an area that could be very busy. It brings nothing to the area because it’s been closed for quite some time.. i’ve always thought when I see really interesting properties if walls could talk, what would they say? This house didn’t seem to be able to share. No one seems to know the story of the closures of every business that has tried to survive in this historic building. The only comments I obtained from a couple of locals is that the place is haunted and very creepy.. one lady shared a worker has been coming and going doing some restoration and his constant companion, a small, mixed breed dog stops, staring at the door, and refuses to go in even though her owner is in there. That is a curious thing. As the little dog is quite adventurous per the lady, and always accompanies him on all jobs . hmmm

We had the option of renting one of the guest houses (the white house) fully equipped or the space in the campsite with an equipped kitchen area, bathroom with hot shower, laundry room, lighting a fire with firewood, seeing stars, Airbnb, etc. On the grounds of the well-structured and well-maintained property, there are several balconies to watch the sunset from rocking hammocks or wooden benches, a deck to see a stream and the possibility of reaching the crystalline waters through well-made trails, a part of the recovered Atlantic forest and original. The wifi works really well.

Fountain Elms was maintained as a house museum, exhibiting the Proctors' paintings, prints and decorative furnishings as the nucleus of a permanent collection. In June of 1941, the Institute was granted the power to "provide instruction in higher education at the college level in the field of fine arts with authority to confer the degree of bachelor of fine arts." It was on this great occasion that the School of Art was established.

I liked this one of the gallinules and did a photoshop treatment of mainly the water. I tried to maintain the integrity of the original and add something to spice up one of the most common species in my area.

I have maintained my social isolation in family and with professional work at home. Here in Brazil we are already with more than 13.000 deaths by Covid-19.

That's why I'm posting my travel photos to Portugal of December 2019.

I hope that my friends here on Flickr are maintaining proper care...we will still overcome all this worldwide adversity.

The Arizona State Capitol in Phoenix, Arizona, United States, was the last home for Arizona's Territorial government, until Arizona became a state in 1912. Initially, all three branches of the new state government occupied the four floors of the statehouse. As the state expanded the branches relocated to adjacent buildings and additions. The 1901 portion of the Capitol is now maintained as the Arizona Capitol Museum with a focus on the history and culture of Arizona. The Arizona State Library which occupied most of the 1938 addition until July 2017 re-opened in late 2018 as a part of the Arizona Capitol Museum.

I used to see his brilliant work at a higher rank, if not the highest, in explore. He was really good at photography and he maintained a very good taste.

I had interactions with many of his work, to which he was very appreciative and uniquely reciprocative.

About three months ago, I noticed that he’s not around! I checked on his page and knew that he wasn’t feeling well. So, I dropped a note on the last work he posted, wished him a quick recovery and told him that I look forward to see him back soon on Flickr.

Yesterday, I saw that post by John B. with the sad news!

I personally feel that Keith is a great loss to many, including Flickr community, and from here, I’m dedicating this post to extend my sincere condolences to his family, friends and everyone in his circle. RIP, my friend!

From it's most earliest days in the early 1900's to it's sad end in the mid 1950's Packard maintained a signature design element on their grill surrounds. Starting lower on the sides the grill surrounds would bump up and raise in the center, and you will find versions of this on every model of every Packard for every year of Packard's existence. When I first came upon the Reo in the photo the first thing I noticed was the Packard like grill surround, and thinking, in fact, that it was indeed a Packard. Well, that was only true until I noticed the emblem in the center with the letters R E O emblazoned on it. Like Packard in their day, Reo was considered somewhat of a luxury automobile, and as such, they were priced accordingly. I suspect, however, that they didn't have the same panache that Packard enjoyed. So, was the Packard like grill surround on this 1930 Reo a design coincidence, or could you say that "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery?" REO, the company, was founded by the former founder and owner of the Oldsmobile company, Ransom E. Olds (Notice the first letters in his name REO.) The company started in Lansing, Michigan, and had a long and somewhat successful history producing cars and trucks from 1905 to 1975. In 1936, Reo stopped producing cars in favor of devoting it's time to the end in 1975 to producing trucks.

Vince M

Although truck orders during World War II enabled it to revive somewhat, the company remained unstable in the postwar era, resulting in a bankruptcy reorganization. In 1954, the company was still underperforming, and sold its vehicle manufacturing operations (the primary asset of the company) to the Bohn Aluminum and Brass Corporation of Detroit. Three years later, in 1957, Reo's vehicle manufacturing operation became a subsidiary of the White Motor Company. White then merged REO with Diamond T Trucks in 1967 to form Diamond Reo Trucks. In 1975, this company filed for bankruptcy and most of its assets were liquidated. Volvo later took over White and thus currently owns the rights to the REO brand name.

The stonechats that I have photographed had two broods. This full frame image is one from the second brood. The bird is trying to maintain purchase on the bramble perch because of the wind. There were 4 successful fledglings for the first brood and 3 for the second. As far as I can make out there were 4 other territories along the 1000m long hillside which resulted in failure or abandonment.

Serenity is maintaining a sense of inner peace even in difficult situations. We gain serenity by accepting the things we cannot change and focusing our energy where we can make a difference.

Fear, anger or desire can create a sense of urgency that triggers us to react impulsively. When this happens, we risk undermining our goals, damaging relationships--even violating our deepest values. By contrast, when we cultivate serenity, we don’t fear our emotions, but we do keep them in balance. We govern ourselves rather than being ruled by external circumstances and our feelings about them.

Meditative practices, contemplation, physical exercise and self-regulation skills all can help us to maintain a serene, peaceful state of mind. This mental state in turn frees us to live thoughtfully and intentionally. When we hold onto our own sense of serenity, we help others to keep theirs.

One of my favorite things about birding adventures is visiting a rookery. With the constant bickering over nest sites, screeching, squawking, garbling and endless chasing, there's constant enjoyment and it's truly 'a sight to behold'. This Cattle Egret was maintaining a constant watch over a selected nest sight where his mate was sitting...you don't want to mess with them!

Villa Carlotta is a palace and museum in Italy, located on the shores of Lake Como in Tremezzo.

Giambattista Sommariva, politician and patron of the arts, bought it in 1801 and transformed it into a true museum, making extensive renovations in the gardens.

The Villa received its name in homage to the other owner Charlotte, Duchess of Saxe-Meiningen (daughter of Princess Marianna of Prussia), who received the palace in 1843 from her mother as a marriage gift.

Although the palace is beautiful and contains some furniture and works of art on two floors open to the public, it is really the garden that attracts attention.

As I said earlier the ample garden and woodland surrounding the palace, in addition to offering a pleasant atmosphere for tour and relaxation, are very beautiful and interesting.

And they also include some tropical plants (various palm trees) as well as exotic flowers (orchids, bromeliads, succulents). A small and well maintained Botanical Garden.

Some Hadada ibis maintain a pair bonding throughout the year. Commonly, a female, with her wings half-open, approaches a male and touches her beak to his beak. After this brief mutual beak-to-beak touching, she resumes feeding elsewhere among the party. Billing behavior of pairs includes rattling of beaks up and down and side-to-side while nodding heads. Courtship includes the offering of sticks by each bird to the other 😄, followed by neck intertwining, mutual preening, head shaking

TSS Duke of Lancaster is a former railway steamer passenger ship that operated in Europe from 1956 to 1979, and is beached at Llannerch-y-Mor Wharf near Mostyn Docks, on the River Dee, in north Wales. She replaced an earlier 3,600-ton ship of the same name operated by the London Midland and Scottish Railway company between Heysham and Belfast.

Along with her sister ships the TSS Duke of Rothesay and the TSS Duke of Argyll, she was amongst the last passenger-only steamers built for British Railways.

From the mid-1960s, passenger ships such as Duke of Lancaster were gradually being superseded by car ferries. Rather than undertake the expensive option of renewing their entire fleet, British Railways instead began a part-programme of conversion. In order to maintain ferry services whilst these modifications took place, Duke of Lancaster's duties as a cruise ship ceased.. On 25 April 1970 the ship returned to service, having had her main deck rebuilt to accommodate vehicles via a rear door at her stern. The ship now provided space for 1,200 single-class passengers and 105 cars, with a total cabin accommodation for 400 passengers

The red cliffs of Capitol Reef tower above the well maintained homestead in Fruita, Utah. The cliffs were, formed by windblown sand deposits (Wingate Formation, thicker lower layer, 200 MYA) and from riverine depsosits (Kayenta Formation, upper layer, ca. 180 MYA). The white dome sticking up in the back is Navajo Sandstone, deposited as sand in a desert environment.

Once one of the most isolated communities in the U.S., Fruita (formerly known as "Junction") is now HQ for Capitol Reef National Park, who maintain fruit orchards and a few of the old buildings. The campground is one of the most scenic in the NPS system, just behind where this was taken. The park is a great example of how human impact on the landscape is nicely blended in with the surroundings, with "historical" orchards adjacent to 1500+ year old petroglyph panels, just below the cliffs of the reef.

The original owners of Italianate homes would often have been third or fourth generation Canadians, probably descended from United Empire Loyalists. The Loyalists were refugees. They left the newly formed United States because they disagreed with fundamental policies of the new republic, one of them being slavery. Many of the Loyalists left beautiful properties, large homes and good lives with only the belongings they could fit on their backs or in a wagon. They would have been pleased to see their descendants living in comfort. In addition, they would have been happy to see that their descendants had maintained the same moral principles that forced their own migration.70
