Notice the wall. It seems like they took down a modern mailbox and replaced it with this old looking one.
Map at new mailbox trailhead sign. It's realistic of them to leave the old trail on the map with the notation "Primitive old trail in difficult, steep terrain". I can't really argue with that, but there are already a number of blowdowns on the lower part of the trail that have not been cleared. It could be that the DNR strategy is to let them be.
It's cute that they have a mailbox icon at the summit!

This was taken the next morning, before she was allowed to clean up. What a mean thing to do to a nice old lady who has trouble bending over!
i went over to the Post Office to ask about this, and someone from the Inspectors office said that it was an added feature to prevent anyone from reaching in and stealing mail !
Needless to say; This answer is completely ludicrous,
If anything The Door is now open for the Optimum Angle to allow anyone to reach in and steal mail, although; it would require an exceptionally skinny arm, or perhaps, the use of a handicapper arm extender ( ? )
The other side of our mailbox still has some red to it's paint. Hopefully, Bob, will get the new mailbox painted this summer...maybe not.
