Dolerite colored the black desert

Sahara Sod is located just north of the White Desert, 50 km south of the Bawati Oasis. Its edge is bordered by mountains that, long ago, ejected a black volcanic mass called dolerite, which forms black rocks.

Thanks to their weathering, the original yellow sand of the desert is covered with a layer of black dust and stones. Some parts of the Black Desert, especially the places covered with conical hills, resemble volcanic scenery.

The highest mountain in the Black Desert is English Mountain, from which there is an interesting view of the surroundings. Gebel az-zuqaq is also a well-known mountain, mainly due to the red, orange and yellow rocks.

The Black Desert ends with a small mountain of pyramidal shape and volcanic origin at the oasis Bahriya - Gebel Gala Siwa. It used to be a lookout point for caravans coming from the Siwa oasis.

Magic Mountain, Duisburg

If you take the challenge to climb this mountain, which takes about one hour (10 minutes for me), the top will surprise you with an impressive view over the oasis, the desert and thousands of palm trees on the other side.

One of the beautiful attractions of the Black Desert is Pyramid Mountain, a relief form that shoot up from the ground much like a pyramids out of the desert. The mountain has symmetrical sides and a pointed peak.

This natural pyramid is just a few kilometers away from Bahariya Oasis. Locals call it Magic Mountain because of the way the light plays on the texture and material of the mountain during the different hours of the day. The golden colour of this rock is very attractive, especially in the later afternoon sun.

This huge bowl was carved by man in the array of marble formation, born at the bottom of an ancient sea nearly two billion years ago. Its gently sloping and steep marble cliffs reach a height of 25 meters.

This is an old quarry of stone mining, which had been developed almost for three centuries. Today, it is a favorite place for lovers of historical heritage and “collectors” of natural phenomena.

The sides of the canyon are penetrated surface and underwater adits, drifts and mines. In one of the walls of the quarry there is a marble grotto – an important landmark of Ruskeala. It is possible to get to the grotto but only by water, using a boat.

The crystal clear lake is surrounded by green spruces and pines in summer, and in winter – the sparkling white snow gently covers marble, shimmering in the rays of winter sun.

The “Underground Lake”: this dip over the underground horizon was formed in 1928. It includes a set of adits, unique acoustics, a possibility to look into the depths of the marble designs.

Tiger & Turtle Magic Mountain, Angerpark, Duisburg

The change in the desert floor from beige to black, 50km south of Bawiti, signals the beginning of the Black Desert. Formed by the erosion of the mountains, which have spread a layer of black powder and stones over the peaks and plateaus, it looks like a landscape straight out of Hades. The Black Desert is a popular stop-off for tours running out of Bahariya Oasis and is usually combined with a White Desert tour.

Other sights in the region include Gebel Gala Siwa, a pyramid-shaped mountain that was formerly a lookout post for caravans coming from Siwa, and Gebel Az Zuqaq, a mountain known for the red, yellow and orange streaks in its limestone base. There is an easily climbed path leading to the mountain's peak.

Ordinary vehicles are able to drive the first kilometre or so off the Bahariya–Dakhla road into the White or Black Deserts, but only 4WD vehicles can advance deeper into either area. The megaliths west of the highway are easy to access by foot, as are the so-called mushrooms to the east; the weirdest wonderland of white hoodoos is quite far to the east. Bir Regwa, a small spring situated along the highway at one of the park entrances, usually has water; it’s good to know where it is (just in case), though best not to rely on it.

Even though it is not allowed to camp or go into the desert, the tourist police turns a blind eye to safari outfits in Bahariya organising short trips to the Black and White Desert.
