Norway Arctic. Day 04 - The Magical Arctic light

That afternoon at 11.45 AM we departed the village Finnsnes on our way north. Right ahead of the ship we see the grand bridge from the mainland and over to the island Senja. And then: What a magic light - already at this time of the day in late January the sunset is making it's magic in the lightly clouded sky (of course some minor adjustment of contrast and color adjustments expose the light even better in the presented result (but no HDR or exaggerated adjustments)).

Our screens looks often different - Still study the strange light apparently in the clouds in the left part (under the big cloud). Regard the strange colors - not red, not blue but maybe in the direction of green. Is it possible that we have a very early glimpse of the coming Northern Light? (that later in the evening was quite strong this day). I don't know.

Anyway this journey was for me a total surprise with days that I within a few hrs had those stunning sunrises and sunsets.

From the net:

Gisund Bridge is a cantilever road bridge on Norwegian County Road 86 in Troms county, Norway.

The bridge crosses the Gisundet strait from the town of Finnsnes on the mainland to the village of Silsand on the island of Senja.

The 1,147-metre (3,763 ft) long bridge has 25 spans, the main span being 143 metres (469 ft) long. The maximum clearance to the sea below the bridge is 41 metres (135 ft). Gisund Bridge was opened on 23 June 1972.

Senja - Norways second largest island

Senja (Northern Sami: Sážžá) is the second largest island in Norway (not counting Svalbard).

Norwegian musician Moddi comes from the island and his music has been said to have been influenced by the beauty of the island.

Senja is located along the Troms county coastline with Finnsnes as the closest town. The municipalities located on Senja are Lenvik (part of which is on the mainland), Berg, Torsken, and Tranøy. Senja had 7782 inhabitants as of 1 January 2008.

The north and western coasts of Senja are facing the open sea. Here, steep and rugged mountains rise straight from the sea, with some fishing villages (like Gryllefjord, Husøy) wherever there is some lowland. The eastern and southern parts of the island are milder, with rounder mountains, forests, rivers and agriculture land.

Maybe it took 50 tries, but, by god, I got it :)

Joshua Tree at dawn.

I've ordered a 35mm 1.4 L lens. I am pretty bloody excited.

In gazing at this now, I'm starting to think I may have been subconsciously influenced by Oliver.

Portland, Oregon. This view caught my attention as I was leaving Lloyd Athletic Club on Halsey. We're getting a bit of the magic light around 4 pm even on these cloudy, showery days.

This is my favorite age to photograph Great Egret chicks. I could see these little white puff-balls from the dining room window (about 900' away) as soon as they hatched. They're really growing up fast and their personalities are developing as fast as they are.

Sechseläuten is the celebration of the end of Winter in Zurich ( at the middle of April), with the culmination being the burning of the Böögg, a snowman perched atop a huge bonfire. It is a half day public holiday in Zurich

The burning of the Böögg snowman is said to determine the quality of the Summer to come. The bonfire is lit from below and once the flames reach the snowman, the excitement in the very large crowd grows.

The "dance" of participants around the fire is real fantastical.

Best View Large on Black. The last photo I took as I was walking down the bluff. While I wanted to stay longer, as the light was getting beautiful, lack of sleep, oxygen and exposure to the cold wind was getting to me.

If you notice a landmass in the distance, that's the Big Island of Hawaii.

I’ve always admired these California buckeye trees (lower left) on a grassy hill in Russian Ridge Open Space Preserve. I arrived at this spot along Ancient Oaks Trail just as the sun was setting behind the scene, with fog and clouds over the distant landscape and ocean. The grassland and steep forested canyons here create a secure refuge for a wide variety of animals. The preserve occupies 3,137 mountainous acres on the San Francisco Peninsula.

A magical twilight envelops the cityscape on the eastern side of Darling Harbour shortly after sunset on a glorious winter day in Sydney.

I took this photo on a local river in December. These are the actual colors, no manipulation. If anything I toned the reds down a bit. We get some amazing colors here, you just never know when it will happen. On this night I was in the right place at the right time and managed to capture several images with different perspectives and light.

It's finally warm enough and sunny enough to get outside and let Benny stretch his legs. It's been so cold since we returned from holiday travel that he's barely been out longer than 15 minutes and I've felt super guilty for his lack of exercise. Luckily, there is a church next door to our apartment complex that has a fenced in soccer field that is open to the neighborhood. It's almost always empty, but it's better than leashed walking. But Benny hit the jack pot when about 10 minutes after we got there two other dogs showed up who wanted to run and play as much as he did! I was so glad I had my camera with me to capture some of their fun.

I was learning and playing ... came up with this. My mind is a buzzing with what I can use this function for, very cool and fun.

Stave Lake area in Mission, BC

It was one of those afternoons when all of the elements worked together to give me the magic and I was so happy to oblige. Lots of Rain, then as the light was setting behind the mountain ... it happened.

The red at the bottom of the images are the blueberry fields waiting for spring.

While we were in Sedona, we saw many beautiful pictures of Cathedral Rock. It is the most photographed location in Sedona, and the folks at the visitor center were able to tell us exactly where to go to take this picture. It was taken at the Red Rock Crossing/Crescent Moon Ranch Picnic Area in Sedona, Arizona. Because the range of light was more than the camera sensor could handle, I bracketed using three exposures, and then combined them using HDR sofware from Photomatix Pro.

Today is Earth Day, a day of awareness and support for environmental protection. First celebrated in 1970 across the USA, Earth Day events are now held in more than 193 countries worldwide. On this date last year, the landmark Paris Agreement was signed, allowing for the implementation of the climate protection treaty. As Earth day nears its 50th anniversary, we must continue to fight for a clean environment with increasing urgency, as the ravages of climate change become more apparent every day...
