After speaking to someone who is more of an expert on insects it's either Dolichopus popularis or Poecilobothrus nobilitatus ( female ) probably my favourite fly to photograph , i just love the colours something you just don't notice with the naked eye .

Macro Highlights – The Best of 2023

2023 went by in a flash, but not without a bang. I managed to document lots of amazing lifers and did field trips in Borneo and Thailand as well. I’ve finally launched Isopod Site which started as a photo compilation of terrestrial isopods and slowly adding in information on taxonomy and biology of isopods. Towards the end of the year, I also managed to dive briefly into microscope photography. It is completely different from macro photography in the field, but an important skill for documenting microfauna.

Oil on water is one of the first subjects that everyone should try out when they get a macro lens. We have been having fun making some amazing abstract shots using this method, you can see how in our latest video >>> youtu.be/mixLIIQ5N00

It's a super simple setup that can get some colourful and creative shots right out of the gate. We have spent many hours taking shot after shot of swirling oil and water mixtures to get some amazing varied results.

All it takes is a shallow glass bowl, some oil, water and a colourful backdrop. Using the Adaptalux Studio and our Colour Filters, we were able to change the colours and gradients behind the oil with ease, getting hundreds of unique shots really quickly.

If you are looking for a new macro subject to try out, definitely give this a go. The colourful abstract shots can make for some great desktop backgrounds. If you're into video, the motion of the water is really pleasing to capture if you have the right lighting.
