Spotted this little guy on our hose pipe stand.

He was tiny, smaller than a pea but with a macro lens he suddenly becomes more than just a tiny jumping spider. He has eyes, and hairs and all this detail you wouldn't normally be able to see! 💜

Does anyone know if this a certain kind of jumping spider? 🤔

Macro Highlights - The Best of 2020

2020 is not a normal year by any measure. With varying degrees of lockdowns happening across the globe due to COVID-19, way fewer field trips were made and we saw photographers spending more time exploring their gardens and the micro fauna around their homes. Were there fewer finds? Yes, but the thing unique about macro photography is that revisiting the same spot over time can yield very different finds and photos.

Here are over 50 of my most memorable photos from 2020, mostly from within Singapore. Hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoyed taking them.

2021 has pretty much contained us within Singapore but despite that, we had many significant discoveries in the little red dot. While we were largely exploring the same trails, we still managed to find something new almost every fortnight. I also started some different styles or approaches to macro photography, including wide-angle selfies and 3D stereoscopic photos, where some would be featured in this post.

Back in the autumn we grabbed some leaves and have been shooting them this week using the Adaptalux Studio. We had loads of fun with it, you can watch the behind the scenes video here - youtu.be/iJOzOkP6Ns8

We find that dried leaves present an interesting challenge compared to healthy green leaves. Curling up and losing all their colour means it can not only be tricky to focus, but there can also be a lack of colour and interesting features on the leaves.

Embracing that challenge, we used the studio to back light this leaf. With the lighting behind it, new colours and contrasts are able to shine through where the leaf has decayed. You can also see some green, though it required a little help from the light to show up.

We also shot freehand, as opposed to setting up on a tripod. Shooting in this way, you are able to have a much greater freedom of movement around the subject. This allowed us to quickly explore the surface of the leaves, changing the focal point of the shot and zooming in on specific interesting features.
