My macro experience 😄

... well, I hope it's not THAT bad! These salt (german: Salz) crystals are between 0.3 - 0.7 mm in size, which means I'm way out of my depth at this magnification, with my limited macro experience and knowledge... However I wanted to try out my new (old) Zeiss Luminar lens, so it was a perfect opportunity.

Macro experience

I discovered this guy on my glass door to the deck last night, apparently searching for evening edibles. A compliant subject, I took many photos but it turned out to be one of those strange macro experiences in which none really turned out. If I ever read my manual I might find out why this occasionally happens. In any event he was still here this morning, so more clicks and a few actually worked out pretty well. You may have already guessed, my glass is not really quite this dirty, so a few textures were applied. If you look closely, you'll see a double reflection of his eye and jaw below.

For those interested, this is the gray tree frog (Hyla versicolor) of which I have seem green and brown but never a gray specimen. The scientific name addresses this color phenomenon, as does Wikipedia which states: "Dead gray tree frogs and ones in unnatural surroundings are predominantly gray." Seems like the common name might have generated a bit more creativity. About two inches in size, this is one of those creatures that often creates the reaction of "cute."

We have been shooting an interesting subject that you can try at home - Dish soap bubbles - So we thought we would share a little how-to to get the creative juices flowing!

Watch the guide on youtube here - youtu.be/dXIpyTTsHLA

We have been experimenting with dish soap bubbles since the early days of the Adaptalux Studio (one of the first shots Sam ever took with the early prototypes). They make for some very cool shots with the correct lighting.

The space-like shots are achieved by shining light through a bottle of dish soap or hand soap. This is really easy to set up and have a go at in your own kitchen!

Shaking the bottle creates little bubbles in the viscous fluid and lighting them from behind or the side can show some amazing colours. The colour can get even more interesting when the fluid is colourless and coloured lights are introduced instead.

This shot was captured using a reversed 24mm lens with and extension tube. It's very close and can be difficult to focus with this set up, but you can get equally amazing shots with less magnification too. Here we used an amber light from the back, and a blue light from the side to create some separation between the bubbles in the foreground and the rest of the solution in the background.

If you want to give it a go, we have a more detailed guide over on our blog too - adaptalux.com/macro-photography-tutorial-dish-soap-bubbles/

This dragonfly came up to me. He was hovering right in front of my face, and I was really examining him, thinking, how does he see me?

the closer you get to these things the more spectacular they get. I'm really enjoying the "macro experience"
