A butterfly on the wall in our garden - I'd never seen a butterfly's eyes before!

I am really enjoying this new macro lens

These butterflies have quite beautiful if subtle colouring. Very easily spooked though

Tota l'estona ha estat intentant moure les seves ales però només conseguia que tremolaren feblement.

All the time it has been trying to move its wings but only got a tremor on them.

Worker wasp Dolichovespula media demolishing one of my pet speckled wood butterflies. The butterfly wizzed past me in the garden being chased by the wasp but got stuck in a spider's web. The wasp much to my suprise continued a rather frenzied attack whilst trying to free the butterfly from the web . Wings eventually dropped off and the wasp freed itsefl with a considerable chunk of butterfly body.

a small butterfly in Alotau, PNG. This photo is cropped.

Ever since my mother saw these butterflies and dubbed them 'Flying Napkins' (because of their size) it's stuck. They're not timid butterflies and will allow you to get quite close.

Skippers didn't seem to reach large numbers in my area this year. This one seen at a small wetland area in Williamstown West Virginia Late July 2011.

Having a connecting flight at Changi airport in Singapore gives a good chance to take some easy pictures of butterflies in the butterfly garden inside the airport.

Top tip - allow your lenses to get warm after the flight before opening them in the 30degree, 90% humidity in the garden.

This is a female. Found in Sweden.

Wikipedia:

The scarce copper (Lycaena virgaureae) is a butterfly of the copper or gossamer-winged butterfly family.

Lycaena virgaureae lives preferably on flower-rich, dry and damp meadows in Central Europe. In Spain it is found in the Pyrenees and in the Cantabrian Mountains. In southern France it is found in the Massif Central. Its area of distribution reaches the Arctic Circle in Fennoscandia in the north; in the south it reaches north and northwest Greece. It is not found, however, on the British Isles, in Belgium, or the Netherlands. It can be found as far east as Mongolia. The scarce copper is found at elevations of 1,000 to 2,000 meters.[2]
