Mint Coining Machine - Potosí (Bolivia)

This is an old Mint Coining Machine that was powered by steam. It was used for minting silver coins.

It is located in the Casa de la Moneda, the old Spanish mint where the silver from the mines of Potosí was transformed into coins.

The original minting machines are preserved in a near-perfect state. The oldest machines were made of huge wooden gears and powered by slaves or animals (depending on availability). Later they used steam-powered machines, but luckily they kept the old machines untouched (just in case!). This huge building is now a national museum.

The beautiful Myford ML7 lathe Peter kindly purchased for me. . .I still cannot quite believe it!

Surface Plate Hand Scraped with a Carbide Scraper

Photo taken c.1977 in the Gun Shop at Hunslet Engine Co, Jack Lane Leeds.

If the machine looks low it is because it is set into a pit 30 inches below the ground, as the height was constricted due to the overhead crane.

The machine was new in 1976 and the first of its type from Wadkin costing £750,000.

The photo shows the right-angle head with a milling cutter taking the edge off the frame of a Rack and Pinion Mines loco, similar to the one pictured here www.flickr.com/photos/chrisngeoff/201129027/

I was one of the two Industrial Engineers responsible for the programming and setting-up of the machine, including the machining of the two supplementary machine tables that we used to load work onto the machine. I am operating the machine in the photo above.

Here is a film named "Made in Britain", shot in 1968 showing scenes in the engine works of both Hunslet Engine Co and English Electric.

This is a row of old Roller Presses machine tools that were powered by steam. They were used for minting silver coins. A Roller Press is used for flattenning bars of metal, which can then be stamped and coined.

Using a much larger cutter, Russ' CNC machine cuts the outline of the PCB. The design leaves a few tiny tabs connecting the board to the outer waste piece, to hold the board in place. Without the tabs, the board will be completely loose at the end of the run, and will jump up and usually either damage itself or break the cutter. They are easily broken off by hand and filed smooth.

Galbiati Group, attending with its Divisions Mechanical machining and Construction and Gear Reducers, attracted considerable interest, and contacts rose far above the level of 2009. Expectations were exceeded, and this is a positive sign for a country, Germany, first in Europe in the engineering sector.

This is one of the earliest turret lathes in existence. A turret lathe holds several tools that rotate into place, so that the operator can perform a variety of jobs without stopping to change tools.
