One of my favourite dragonfly types - they look like pure killing machines - this is an Australian Tiger (Ictinogomphus australis) from Sippy Downs in Queensland.
Don't let his size fool you:Junior is only 18months old.And don't let his collar or colour or breed fool you either:this is no aggressive fighting machine. This is a soulful and sad little boy, who needs someone gentle to let him into their home and love him for who he is, and not abuse him for what he may look like.
My old washing machine got cranky, and after trying to get 3 different repairman to give a sh*t (and costing me a fortune, not to mention wasted time), I ended up taking it apart myself to try and fix. I finally gave up and bought a new machine.
This one sings at me instead of eating clothes like the old one.
..operate a Trumpf TR180 CNC sheet metal punching machine. This is part of the tool setting and rest a while sleeping when no one is looking bench. The gun type looking things are tooling cartdridges which are used to insert the punch and dies into the machine. This was part of my work station from 1988-1995.

Dancing Qubits, Celebrating Quantum Computing, Technology, Ingenuity, And Creativity (Music Video) - IMRAN™
In the ever-evolving world of technology, we find ourselves on the brink of something even more powerful than the current breakneck pace of massive developments in artificial intelligence…. this time a quantum revolution, for real.
Inspired by the groundbreaking advancements in quantum computing which Microsoft's CEO Satya Nadella announced this week, I quickly created a short piece of music - and then a music video. This 2.5 minutes work is literally a first-(and only)-take, created after a really quick barely 15-minutes music recording session. I think you will enjoy it. Pardon the imperfections.
I then added a visualizer video depicting a mesmerizing view of energized atoms, and swirling quantum bits, qubits. I titled this latest music video "Dancing Qubits,” as we celebrate a significant milestone in this new technology.
My employer Microsoft’s collaboration with Atom Computing has achieved a 24-qubit quantum machine. This development marks a pivotal moment in our journey towards harnessing the power of quantum mechanics to solve complex problems that were once deemed insurmountable. This was actually one of the developments I predicted in my keynote speeches at AI related CEO, CIO, and CISO conferences from New York to Las Vegas and Paris to Berlin just in the last few years.
Quantum computing, with its ability to process information at unprecedented speeds, promises to transform industries and unlock new realms of possibility. The intricate dance of qubits, much like the swirling visuals in my video, symbolizes the delicate balance and immense potential of this technology.
As we continue to push the boundaries of innovation, let us draw inspiration from the creativity and ingenuity that drive us forward. Together, we are not just witnessing the future; we are actively shaping it. Join me in celebrating this remarkable achievement and the endless possibilities that lie ahead.

A mystery machine….
This bus was supplied on 1 February 1990 to Strathclyde Regional Council, initially being kept in the former Glasgow Corporation Bridgeton Bus Garage, before being sent to Renfrew Division in the former Western/Clydeside Thornliebank Depot in Carnwadric Road. It is a Leyland Roadrunner 9-13 with a Wright Consort TT body fitted in Wishaw. The engine is a Cummins 6B series.
Numbered 23189 (G571 PNS), it was run by Strathclyde Regional Council on disabled transport duties until the Scottish local government reorganisation in 1995 when it transferred to East Renfrewshire District Council. It could regularly be seen outside Netherlee Pavilion at lunchtimes from the school playground next door during the 1996-7 school years.,
It remained "on the books" as a reserve fleet vehicle and was certainly used at least once as late as 2007. It was taken out of service in 2008 and returned to its first home at Bridgeton, now the home of the GVVT.
Like most council buses, this one seems to have evaded us enthusiasts for much of its life, and very little is known about it. Even Wright apparently have no record of having built it, despite their badge on the front!

Dressmaster sewing machine. This machine runs incredibly smooth and makes a beautiful stitch!
This is a Trumpf TC500 CNC sheet metal punching machine. This was my work station from 1995 to 1999. The machine basically punches holes and contours in sheet metal up to 6mm thick. This is at the manufactured components division at the Marconi site in Waterhouse Lane Chelmsford.
This site opened in 1964 and closed in 1999. I was here from 1984 through to the end in 1999. It's now occupied by a Homebase DIY store and some small industrial units.
Once a centre of engineering exellence you can now buy pot plants in the same place.

Dessert 2: grilled green pear topped with a paper thin slice of under-ripe pear, pine parfait that's been aerated in a vacuum machine (this was really bubbly and nice), all bound together by a loose pear purée.
The plate was very impressive. Not only was it aesthetically gorgeous (those colours so soothing, the combination so pretty), but the variations of pear - the subtle and not-so-subtle contrasts in textures and flavours - was awesome. Loved this in concept and in execution.
That was before pairing it with the pear and verbena juice, which when taken together, knocked things out of the ball park.
We made some cool 'pataphysical talismans and time machines this week in Geo Monly’s amazing woodshop at Tam High School in Mill Valley.
Howard Rheingold (a.k.a. Dr. Rindbrain) and Jean Bolte (a.k.a. Dr. Figurine) have been building a Time Machine model, which is coming along very well. It is a modular structure with five walls, which can house a wide range of interactive art works. It could grow into a 'collection of time machines’, featuring different artist's views of events that impact us all.
Fabrice Florin (a.k.a. Dr. Fabio) made hundreds of 'pataphysical talismans, using Tam High's laser printer, an Illustrator file created by Freddy Hahne (a.k.. Dr. Really). It only took a couple hours to print over 280 talismans, which are based on the symbol of unity, featured in stupas all over Nepal.
Our creative process is documented in this photo album: bit.ly/pata-photos

Captain Macklin adapted the large stress-free American Hudson for U.K. production and the resulting Railton was a very impressive machine. This example was ordered by motorcyclist Eric Fernihough, with coachwork by John Charles and Co. Ltd. of Brentford. In autumn 1934, Fernihough and Charles Mortimer succeeded in breaking the 12-hour record for a 250c.c. motorbike at Brooklands and used the Railton to light the way at dusk and thus avoid potentially dangerous swarms of rabbits on the track.

This machine was the second version of Atomic manufactured in the UK by the Sassoon company. It features the unique cherry red steam ball and frothing attachment which comes directly out of the head of the machine. This is only ever seen on UK manufactured atomics and a few Italian made Atomics. It appears that Sassoon started out importing Robbiati Atomics from Italy in the 1950's. However they soon seem to have severed ties with Robbiati and designed and manufactured their own distinctive Atomic coffee makers. The majority of Sassoon labelled Atomic coffee makers are made in the United Kingdom and not Italy. At a guess Sassoon was marketing these machines between 1955-1968?. Little is known concerning the Sassoon company at this time. The UK designer/designers remains unknown to collectors.
The machine above features a very rare bakelite Jug cover. This was a Sassoon invention and the lid is beautifully shaped to fit over the jug handle. This feature along with the bright red steam ball, large bakelite water filler knob and flattened portafilter handle- all combine to make the Sassoon Atomic a very unique design. To my mind the Sassoon Atomic has a 50's Pop style as compared to the somewhat art deco lines of Italian Atomic coffee makers.

What a machine this is, I will be going back when the sky is better
The crew of Fright Nights at the PNE in Vancouver put on a wonderfully fun and creepy atmosphere for our delight. Roaming "evil" clowns and other monsters, Hallowe'en themed music, and corny ride and food vendor names (Fries to DIE for... really? You really made that sign?), and smoke machines. OH, the smoke machines.
This incandescent light flooded the area with yellow-orange light when surrounded by the thick smoke, but as the smoke drifted away, there was a brief moment wherein I was able to get this shot.
I guess my mind is already preparing for comet ISON's arrival in the skies next month.
7 of 52 weeks of BAM
I'm jumping the gun a bit with this week's shot, but I couldn't pass up this awesome backdrop (which, btw, is in my great aunt's bathroom). Move over, Hot Tub TIme Machine . . . this wall paper shot me right back to the 1970s. Throw in the great grandfather's Cadi and I was really living it up vintage style!
It was nice to spend the day with the paternal relatives - I don't do it often, though I feel I should because they are part of who I am. I need to let go of the bad blood that was and embrace the good blood that IS.
Late, 1978 reissue of earlier material. "Light My Fire" (from here) is the real standout.
I just learned the odd fact that Project 3 was originally half-owned by the Singer Corporation (yes, sewing machines). This was during Singer's strange diversification spasm when they also bought camera-maker Graflex.
Stationary machines like hollow chisel mortises and slot mortises occupy large amount of floor space in your shop, are expensive to purchase, require a lot of setup and maintenance, and force you to bring the material to the tool. Festool has taken the revolutionary concept of the Domino joiner and made it larger, the Domino XL Joiner. The Domino XL offers a more elegant solution to the challenge of large scale joinery. Amazingly simple to use, fast and accurate. The Domino XL now complements the capabilities of the original Domino DF 500, with a maximum tenon size of about five and a half -Inch in length (140 mm). No job is too big for the Domino XL. With an expanded range of thicker, longer tenons, you will quickly and precisely join massive slabs, doors and gates, or construct the most durable of tables and beds. With the Domino XL, you’ve got a system light enough and nimble enough for use anywhere in the shop or the jobsite. When the work piece is too large to come to the machine, this makes all the difference. Precision placement of solid hardwood tenons guarantees not only a perfect fit, but a finished product that will last for generations. What's in the box? XL D12 cutter, Plug-it Power Cord, Support Bracket, Wrench and T Loc Systainer Sys 5.
Part of a project called 'Mighty Machines' this series, from my perspective is about the unbreakable, and vintage era of mechanical over digital.
This large format camera was merely sat in a technicians room collecting dust, so I decided to grab it and and use it to its full potential. For me during this project the big thing was revealing this machine, for the mechanics and workings that made it tick. This large, black abyss in the centre of the image caught my eye, but interestingly only through the eye of the camera. After the initial shoot, I was impressed with my results - however, after the editing period I was overwhelmed with my results.
The shoot was made up of one studio light, one D7100 Nikon DSLR camera, a tripod, a piece of black sugar paper and a table. I believe the simplicity of the shoot is what helped me to focus on all of the details in the images.

MCGRATH, Alaska -- U.S. Marines assigned to Delta Company, 4th Law Enforcement Battalion, deliver toys to children living in remote villages of Alaska as part of the Toys for Tots program, Dec. 10. After traveling to a remote hub of villages via aircraft provided by the 144th Airlift Squadron, Alaska Air National Guard, the Marines travel to different villages on snow machines. This year three teams of Marines traveled to numerous villages in the vicinities of Kotzebue, Galena and McGath. Toys for Tots is a program run by the United States Marine Corps Reserve with a goal of delivering, through a new toy at Christmas, a message of hope to less fortunate youngsters that will assist them in becoming responsible, productive and patriotic citizens. Hör Zu is a german Radio & TV paper. They released only records from the companies - Telefunken & EMI Electrola. This one is a EMI Electrola LP you can see it on the order number SHZE - E= Electrola. This LP is a sampler ! First side is the second side of Soft Machine Vol 2 - Second side is the first side of the first Soft Machine. This Hör ZU Black Label is very interesting. They relased a lot of Prog Rock LPs with a special Label Design.
It looks good from any angle. I generally don't like the white tail lights (red looks just fine!) but it really works on this machine. This year there'll be videos to showcase the great exhaust notes!

[[ A system to reduce power consumption in industry ]] by :- J S PASRICHA
1) Previously the machines had AC Clutch and AC Induction motor i.e. 400 Watt to 500 watt consumption per hour. Now, I have used DC motor 50 watt to 100 watt consumption per hours
.
2) The size of DC motor now is which is much smaller than the AC motor used previously. The size of the table has also been reduced accordingly.
3) The battery of 70 Ampere 12 volt can be charged with single solar panel of 75 Watt and this can work for 10 hours where there is no electricity/ rural areas.
4) In cities, AC to DC converter would be used to run the motor.
5) The DC motor can work on small invertors also.
Overall, the idea of operating industrial sewing machines on DC motors is very beneficial and this project would be helping many lives in future
I am a 51 years old business man working in the field of Industrial Sewing Machines since 1977, i.e. when my age was just 14 years. After passing my 8th class, I started operating Button Hole and Button Stitch machines. That time the cost of making one button hole and putting one button was 2 paisa each. The more button holes and buttons were stitched, the more money I would make. This was my only source of earning bread and butter, but at times I would end up earning nothing in the day because of electricity failures and operational dysfunctions in the machines for which there were hardly any repairers around at that time as the machines were not made in India . After making lot of efforts, I was able to understand and fix some of the common problems myself that occurred in the machines. This helped me to great extend as I was no longer dependent on getting the machines repaired from outside or buying new machines. But the problem of electricity failures persisted. However, there was no solution to this that time. I moved on in life and my business, gradually got into sale and servicing of all kinds of Industrial Sewing machines and progressed.
But I wished if I could still do something that could help people like me at large who are till date struggling great deal and ending up compromising on their bread and butter because these high-load industrial machines like Button Hole, Button Stitcher, Overlock, Bartake, Feedoarm, Double-needle, Zig-zag, Belt machine, Elastic inserting machine, Snap button machine etc. do not work without electricity. Each machine consumes about 400 Watt of electricity per hour. Using these industrial sewing machines on present day generators, invertors and solar plants is possible, but that requires huge investment, set-up and space. Consequently, the profit becomes small. So this was not a welcoming and exciting idea.
I was constantly thinking of some other way by which these high-load industrial sewing machines could perform on low-load/ less energy and should be portable so that it could be used anywhere, no matter that place is connected with regular power source or not.
The whole idea was to make these industrial sewing machines available, accessible and operational in the most under developed areas and also save energy. For discussions, understanding and research on this proposal, I visited companies in abroad during 2001, 2002, 2004, 2007 but they suggested that the power consumption can be reduced to 50% but this was not enough, as this meant that each machine would still consume 200 watt per hour. I aimed to reduce the power consumption by 80% so I continued making efforts. After lots of research and experiments, I have finally been able to achieve success. Now all such high-load industrial sewing machines could be operated only at the consumption of 75 Watt per hour.

Well, the D7000 testing continues with a "real" photo shoot today at American Viscose. I headed out there with Ken (noss4ra2 here on flickr) at lunch.
This is an old Burroughs Model 500 computing machine. This was a primarily mechanical calculator/tabulator that could calculate and print out huge ledgers and tables.
This is is a bit out of repair...

Oh my...these great graphics on this vintage pinball machine were definitely created waaaaaaaaaay before everyone got all hypersensitive. Certainly over-th-top sexy but, what a better way to get a teen-age kid to plunk all his or her quarter into the machine??? This pickleball museum is right across from the "Welcome to Las Vegas" sign and it is one of the very few things that are FREE. Obviously the machine take quarters but no entry fee.
Also, for many years I have been plague wondering why my X100V just could not get a shot correct. So, duh, I finally reset the camera to ground zero and now I can get back to using this camera.

Installation detail. Top of photo. Two out of three of my 1980s T-shirts presented in the show. In the mid-80s Hackney was a rundown and unfashionable part of London, it has since been somewhat gentrified. The I ♥ Hackney shirt was at the time obviously ironic and hundreds were sold from a market stalls in London and at music festivals. The shirt pre-dates the local council’s I ♥ Hackney campaign by more than 20 years. The I ♥ Fine Art T-shirt used a photo of Congo The Chimp painting. The shirts on display were the very last ones I had left and the I ♥ Fine Art tee was stolen during the show - with the result I no longer have one.
Bottom of photo. Over the past few years I have further explored the possibilities for the aesthetic transformation of my book Down & Out In Shoreditch & Hoxton by shredding copies of my novel. The various shredders I have used to do this are not designed for continuous shredding and so there is always a possibility the machine will break down before I finish shredding my book. One of the resulting sculptures was on display in Space as Shredded Book and offered for sale in pieces inside a shredding machine for £1000. Shredded Book exists as a series of 10 unique works numbered 1 to 10 (with two artist’s proofs), all comprising a copy of Down & Out In Shoreditch and Hoxton shredded and left inside a shredding machine. No two copies of Down & Out In Shoreditch & Hoxton will shred in exactly the same way, and therefore there will be subtle differences between each piece in the Shredded Book series (NB it is not an edition). Two different videos of me shredding copies of Down & Out In Shoreditch & Hoxton can be viewed on my YouTube channel – one shows me shredding in a domestic space, and the other engaging in destruction/creation as a performance piece in a gallery.

One of my favourites street shot taken in the subway (Lyon city). I was walking towards the transfer station when I saw this guy, like struck dumb with admiration at the vending machine. This is innovation
This beautiful Mack dumptruck holds granular ashphalt that's fed into the paving machine. This one looks brand-spanking new. The product will soon make this beauty look like the road itself.

This is the back for my babynova quilt. I *love* love*love* the zigzag back that Lee designed and sat down at my machine this morning to make one. However, I got to thinking about how Lee said that the back is an opportunity to use up some of your fabric and what I needed to use up were little 1.5" squares...for some reason I have a *ton* of them left over from making the front of my quilt. I also thought that the zigzag might not match up very well with the black hand quilting I have planned. So, I designed this back (also because I did not have a large enough piece of my tone on tone background fabric to just make a solid back!) I hope the small batik square in the corner does not end up looking weird with the hand quilting....
Around 2006 brand new atomics started appearing on the market. Though they didn't exactly look brand new... For many years prior to this the only source of Atomic coffee makers was second hand markets and auction houses. Lucky individuals found one in the attic or at a church sale, but most people had to bid high, and pay through the nose.
However all was not as it seemed with these new machines. Although they were labeled as being Bon Trading (australia) imports of Italian made Atomics- they were very poorly made with a rough, hand finished appearance. Many of them did not work very well, and they were 'not quite right'...
It was soon discovered that these machine were made in India and falsely labeled as being made in 'Italy'. The prices of these dodgy machines dropped rapidly and then they disappeared from the market altogether. Today it is hard to find one of these Indian made Atomics and they are collectible in their own right.
For the collector interested in purchasing an Atomic it is a simple matter to identify one of these fakes. The most prominent difference between these machine and earlier Italian made Atomics is the boiler plug. On the Indian machine this plug sticks out in an ugly fashion. Other obvious differences can be seen in the bakelite parts. These parts are much thicker and are poorly formed compared to vintage Italian machines. The filter basket is distinctive: the holes in it appear to be randomly punched with a nail or similar implement by hand.
These machine are not too bad as a hand finished attempt to replicate the atomic form. It is by no means an easy (or cheap) process. Sand casting the body is an art in itself. It is clear this atomic was reverse engineered from an Italian made Atomic- probably a model dating from the 70's. They copied every detail right down to the label.
The example pictured here works and was actually used to make coffee by its original owners for over 4 years. When they purchased it they were told it 'was made in Italy'. When they complained of the poor quality they were sent another one...
However the machine was marketed deceptively, and we would not recommenced using one to actually to make coffee: they are poorly made from inferior materials. There are rumors the alloy was recycled from old car parts...
this example is in the Ikon Exports collection.

Village communal oil press machine (India)
This very noisy diesel-powered press was used by the villagers to crush some sort of seeds that they grow (not sure what seed it is), and produce oil. They then sell the oil and the residual pressed seeds (that looks like a thick paste).
If you can identify what seed they are crushing (based on the village location), please post a Comment!
This seems to be the only production of this village that is being sold outside (other than occasional livestock).
The villagers were very proud of this machine.
This photo is part of a series that I took in a small rural Indian village.
