St. Mary’s Talent Shines in our 2014 School Production
St. Mary’s Menston again celebrated the school’s enormous talent as Shakespeare’s Macbeth was brought to the school stage. Under the guidance of Drama Teachers Miss Andrews and Miss Exworthy, a cast of forty students performed over three consecutive nights.
The play is considered to be one of Shakespeare’s darkest and most powerful tragedies and tells the story Macbeth, a brave Scottish general who receives a prophecy from a trio of witches that one day he will become King of Scotland.
The entire cast and crew worked extremely hard for months to make the performances a resounding success. Sixth Form student George Bilenko was outstanding as Macbeth and Millie Malir, cast as Lady Macbeth, made such a difficult role appear easy. Other notable performances were Maddie Tysoe, Aimee Goodman and Keira Heckman who played the Witches.
“The performances this week have taken my breath away. The dedication and talent of the cast has been inspirational. They have rehearsed, prepared and performed with such professionalism that they could have graced any stage!”
Miss Andrews, who Directed and Produced the performance
“Congratulations to all cast and crew members involved in this outstanding production. As members of the audience remarked, this was far more than a “school production” with performances of the very highest quality, acknowledged by all those lucky enough to attend. Months of hard work from students and staff have gone into making the play such a wonderful success and all concerned deserve the very highest praise for their dedication and effort. There would appear to be no end to talented students at St. Mary’s and we are blessed with members of staff who are prepared to nurture and develop this talent by providing unique and exceptional opportunities for our young people.”
Mr Geldart, Assistant Headteacher
"The most polished first night performance I have seen of any production. The play was wonderful! Well done everyone involved in Macbeth."
Mrs Findlay, Chaplain and Learning Mentor, St. Mary's Menston
"Macbeth has been a great experience for everyone involved, and we couldn't have done it without Miss Andrews"
George Bilenko, Year 13 (Macbeth)
"Macbeth is probably the most challenging production I've been in during my 7 years at St. Mary's, but I loved it. I'm genuinely proud of everyone that was involved and the amount of dedication shown. It was incredible!"

Shakespeare’s infamous tale of political gluttony and supernatural vengeance finds refreshing new life in this piercing, stripped-down adaptation that creates a taut, contemporary thrill ride. Three women tackle all the roles, with captivating shape-note singing lending a haunting soundtrack to the rise and fall of Scotland’s most notorious royal assassin. Perennially relevant and breathtaking, Macbeth is a drama that demands to be seen — whether it’s your first or five hundredth time.

Not exactly an uplifting quotation, this. MacBeth has just learned of his wife's suicide and says, "She should have died hereafter. There would have been time for such a word." His Tomorrow soliloquy ensues. Its bitter tone reveals more arrogance than sorrow or remorse, for he has yet to learn of Birnam Wood's approach to Dunsinane or MacDuff's (not of woman born) hunger for retribution. He still believes, in other words, his defeat impossible. His overweening ambition and the horrible murders he's committed or ordered, like the dead leaves swallowed by an icy birdbath, trouble him not. Thus, MacBeth's lust for power, his nihilism, have doomed him, and his life has come to nothing. Makes me think he's not understood his own words. If so, what irony.
